Subject-Verb Agreement

In order to make it easier to follow, we’ve classified your needful materials. For each section, standard questions are raised, and detailed explanations are provided to make sure a sound understanding of the answers is earned.

Questions on Subject-Verb Agreement

The subject and the verb in a sentence or a clause must agree in number. Singular subjects take singular verbs which usually end in -s, while plural subjects take plural verbs which do not usually end in -s.

Here you can find a short quiz on this subject matter.

For each of the following, choose the sentence in which the subject and the verb agree.

Answer Explanations

1. B
Subordinate clauses that come between the subject and the verb do not affect their agreement. In this sentence, who is practicing along with a few others is a subordinate clause.

2. B
If two singular subjects are connected by or, the verb should be singular.

3. A
If words such as each, every, or no precede the subject, the verb should be singular.

4. A
In case of paired conjunctions such as neither/nor, the verb should agree with the nearest subject, the one after nor.

5. A
Academic subjects are considered singular, so the verb accompanying them should be singular.

6. B
Diseases are considered singular, so the verb accompanying them should be singular.

7. A
Collective nouns such as family, committee, team, staff, herd, etc. can be either singular or plural depending on the rest of the sentence. However, they typically take the singular form and are treated as a cohesive single unit.

8. A
Prepositional phrases that come between the subject and the verb do not affect their agreement. In this sentence, of the rainbow is a prepositional phrase.

9. A
Titles of books, novels, movies, and other similar works are considered singular and therefore take a singular verb.
