Below is a question for a grade 2 student. The question is for a student of typical ability for this age group.
I have a five in the one's place. I am greater than 27 but less than 43.
What number am I?
This question requires the student to think logically and rule out possible answers.
The student needs to break down what the question says into parts which they can manage and think about separately.
The students first instinct should be to look at the numbers greater than 27. They will then be able to rationalize that the number cannot begin with 2 as 27 is greater than 25 which is the only number with a 2 in the ten’s column and 5 in the one’s column.
They can then use the same for numbers less than 43. As 45 is greater than 43 they can rule out this option.
This leaves them with numbers between 30-39. And only one of these numbers has a five in the one’s column. 35.
This logical reasoning is the basis behind all mathematics and here at Forbest Academy we encourage and nurture students logical thinking skills.
