Mar Martínez de Saavedra Álvarez
Hello! I am Mar, which in my native language, Spanish, means ‘the sea.’ I am a professional educator and environmental scientist with over 10 years of experience committing to academic excellence and enhancing students’ meaningful learning experience.
I have a Master of Sciences in Environmental Practice, and received the Chancellor’s Award for the highest academic performance, and a BSc in Biology. I also received an award from the Shawnigan Basin Society for my outstanding scientific work and contributions. I worked as a marine ecologist and as a remote sensing professional, participating in national and international aerial and field missions monitoring biophysical changes worldwide. I have presented at mine reclamation and oceanographic conferences, organized scientific sessions and interdisciplinary workshops, and liaised between diverse sectors and cultures.
I am also a BC certified educator, and a National Geographic educator. I am presently leading two projects under the National Geographic framework with students in Spain.
I love science and I love teaching. My main passions are bridging across cultures and disciplines, fostering active engagement, and creating a learning community based on respect where students can discover the joy of learning, develop self-awareness, and gain a variety of tools beyond academics that will help them achieve personal growth and success in life. I work with families and education teams to create an environment where students feel included and empowered to be explorers, agents of change and critical thinkers for life.
