How to Apply to Engineering at the University of Glasgow: Four-Year BEng and Five-Year MEng at the James Watt School of Engineering, with a Broad First Year, for UK, International (Including Chinese) and Transfer Applicants
Glasgow’s undergraduate engineering degrees are taught by the James Watt School of Engineering: mechanical, civil, electronics and electrical, aeronautical, biomedical and more, as four-year BEng or five-year MEng degrees. You apply directly to a specific programme, each with its own UCAS code. Prerequisites are clear: A-level Mathematics and Physics, or IB HL Mathematics and Physics. BEng is typically AAB–BBB at A-level and 34 at IB; MEng is AAA and 38. International applicants have until 30 June. International tuition for 2027/28 is £33,708 a year, and A-levels AAB or IB 36 (BEng), or A*AA or IB 39 (MEng), guarantee a £10,000-a-year fee discount. This guide covers programmes, entry, English, fees, scholarships, China and transfers.
At the University of Glasgow, undergraduate engineering is taught by the James Watt School of Engineering. Glasgow describes it as a large research-intensive school offering a diverse portfolio of professionally accredited programmes across most engineering disciplines. Scottish degrees are typically a year longer, so the MEng takes five years and students can spend all of Semester 1 of the final year on an extensive individual project, in industry, at an international university or in Glasgow’s research laboratories. Below is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Glasgow’s official information, for UK applicants, international applicants (including those from China) and students hoping to transfer in. Applications go through UCAS; this guide does not access UCAS, so check there before you submit.
1. Programmes and degrees
The School’s undergraduate list includes the following, all BEng (four years) or MEng (five years) unless noted, and you apply directly to the specific programme.
- Aerospace: Aeronautical Engineering (BEng H415 / MEng H410) and Aerospace Systems (H402 / H401).
- Biomedical: Biomedical Engineering (J750 / J751).
- Civil: Civil Engineering (H202 / H200) and Civil Engineering with Architecture, with the Glasgow School of Art (H2KC / H2K1).
- Electronics and electrical: Electronics & Electrical Engineering (H600 / H601), Electronic & Software Engineering (BEng GHP6, BSc GH66, MEng HG66), Electronics with Music (H6W3 / H6WJ), Mechatronics (H730 / H731) and Robotics & Artificial Intelligence (H760 / H7RO).
- Mechanical: Mechanical Engineering (H300 / H302), Mechanical Design Engineering (HH37 / HHJ7), Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics (H3H4 / H3HK), Energy Engineering (H800 / H801) and Product Design Engineering, with the Glasgow School of Art (H3W2 / H3WG).
- Joint programmes: dual degrees in electronics and electrical engineering with UESTC, a joint Mechanical Engineering degree with SIT (the page gives only the abbreviation), and civil and electronics dual degrees with Universitas Indonesia; see section 6.
Computing Science sits outside the School of Engineering and has its own guide on this site. Electronic & Software Engineering is shared with the School of Computing Science, whose undergraduate programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society.
Professional accreditation, as stated on the programme pages: the BEng in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Robotics & AI is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council as partially meeting the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng), and the MEng as fully meeting it. Aeronautical Engineering and Aerospace Systems are accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and IMechE; Biomedical Engineering by IMechE and IPEM; Civil Engineering by the Joint Board of Moderators; Mechanical Design Engineering and Product Design Engineering by IMechE and the Institution of Engineering Designers; Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics by IMechE and the Royal Aeronautical Society. The Energy Engineering page says the University plans to seek accreditation once the first cohort has graduated. The Electronics & Electrical Engineering and Electronics with Music pages do not state accreditation, so it is not published there; check the course page or ask the School.
2. How admission works: direct to a programme, with a broad first year
- Direct entry to a specific programme: each programme has its own UCAS code, with BEng and MEng listed separately. The engineering programme pages do not describe an undeclared-engineering first year.
- Broad first year: in Mechanical Engineering, for example, Year 1 covers mechanical engineering, mathematics, dynamics, electronics, materials, statics, thermodynamics and engineering skills. Glasgow says this interdisciplinary approach makes it easy to switch to most other engineering disciplines at the end of Year 1. The exact conditions and any limits on places are not published; ask the School’s student advisers.
- BEng and MEng: the Mechanical Engineering page says the first three years are the same. Several programme pages say well-performing BEng students may transfer to the MEng after Years 1, 2 and 3.
- Advanced entry: applicants with exceptional grades can choose Year 2 entry on UCAS, finishing an Honours degree in three years instead of four (four instead of five for MEng). If it is not available or unsuccessful, you are automatically considered for Year 1 with no separate application. Requirements are in section 3.
- Interviews and tests: the engineering programme pages mention no interview or admissions test. The admissions guidance says applicants for Year 2 entry in any subject may be interviewed.
3. Prerequisites and grades
The programme pages share one standard, with a few exceptions noted below.
- A-level: BEng typically AAB–BBB, MEng AAA, with Mathematics and Physics required (Design & Technology may replace Physics for the 3D or Product Design options only).
- IB: BEng 34 (6,5,5), MEng 38 (6,6,6), with HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches) and Physics; SL 6 is accepted for one of the two.
- Scottish Highers: for BEng, AABB from S5 is the minimum to be reviewed for an S6 offer (not guaranteed), with offers typically at AAAAA by the end of S6; for MEng, AAAB, typically AAAAAA. Higher Mathematics and Physics or Engineering Science at AA are required (AB or BA may be considered). A B at Advanced Higher counts as an A at Higher.
- Exceptions: the Electronic & Software Engineering BEng page gives AAAB as the minimum, and the BSc page says AAABB at S5 will be considered, with Higher Mathematics and Computing if Mathematics is not at A; Electronics with Music also needs Higher Music, Music Technology or ABRSM Grade 6 (practical and theory). Robotics & AI and Energy Engineering follow the standard above.
- Advanced entry: Advanced Highers AAA including Mathematics and Physics or Engineering Science, in one exam year at the first attempt; or A*A*A at A-level including Mathematics and Physics, in one exam year at the first attempt; or IB 38 with three Higher Level subjects at 6,6,6 including Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches) and Physics, in one exam year at the first attempt. Scottish applicants must also meet the standard offer threshold with S5 grades.
- Maths placement tests and AP/IB credit for required engineering courses: the programme pages do not say; not published.
4. UK applicants
- Applying: through UCAS. The deadline is 13 January 2027, 18:00 (UK time), the equal consideration date; for applications that include Oxford or Cambridge it is 15 October (no year is stated). Glasgow says late applications are generally not accepted and course changes are not allowed after the deadline.
- Qualifications: A-level, Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers, and IB are in section 3. The engineering pages do not list a separate BTEC requirement; not published, so check the admissions guidance or ask admissions.
- Fees: students from Scotland pay £1,820 a year for 2027/28 (eligible students can apply to SAAS to have fees paid); for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 2026/27 is £9,790 a year and 2027/28 is shown as “TBC”.
- Widening access: adjusted entry requirements for BEng are BBBB (MD20) or AABB (MD40), together with a Top-Up or Summer School; eligible applicants may also enter Year 2 through bespoke HNC articulation programmes at partner colleges. Eligibility is on the Access Glasgow page.
- HND to Year 2: the admissions guidance lists engineering HNDs, including a requirement for Engineering Maths 3, Advanced Higher Maths at B or equivalent, and the Summer School; Year 2 entry to Civil Engineering with Architecture is not available.
5. International applicants
- How to apply: UCAS or the Common App; if you apply to several UK universities, Glasgow recommends UCAS.
- Deadline: 30 June 2027. Late applications are generally not accepted and applications cannot be changed after the deadline; leave time for your visa.
- English: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no subtest under 6.0, with One Skill Retake accepted; TOEFL, for tests from 21 January 2026, 92 overall (Reading 22, Listening 20, Speaking 23, Writing 21), and for earlier tests 90 overall (Reading 20, Listening 19, Speaking 19, Writing 21); PTE 59 (59 in all); Cambridge CAE/CPE 176 (169 in each); Oxford ELLT 7 (6 in each); LanguageCert 70 (60 in each). Tests must be within 2 years 5 months of the start date and meet overall and subtest scores in one sitting. Glasgow’s pre-sessional courses give direct entry on completion, with no need to retake IELTS.
- Qualifications: Glasgow accepts many national qualifications, including SAT/AP from the USA and CBSE from India; A-level and IB applicants follow the programme pages. International students below the academic requirements are advised to contact Glasgow International College for foundation programmes.
- Tuition: £33,708 a year for international Science and Engineering programmes in 2027/28 (£33,210 in 2026/27).
- World Changers Global Excellence Scholarship: for international and EU students starting in 2027, a £10,000 annual fee discount in the College of Science and Engineering, renewable with satisfactory progress. Guaranteed thresholds for the School of Engineering: BEng A-level AAB or IB 36; MEng A*AA or IB 39 (or local equivalent); offers on predicted grades can be withdrawn if final results fall short. Offer holders are assessed automatically; no separate application.
- STEM in Scotland Award: 5 awards of a £10,000 annual stipend for up to four years (£40,000 in total), with the same engineering thresholds (BEng AAB/36, MEng A*AA/39). It closes on 31 May 2027, with results by 14 June, and cannot be combined with the Global Excellence Scholarship. Eligible engineering programmes include Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronic & Software Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics, Mechatronics, and Robotics & AI; Energy Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Electronics with Music and Civil Engineering with Architecture are not on the page’s list.
6. Applicants from China
- Gaokao and Chinese high school results: the programme pages and China page read for this guide do not give a Gaokao or high school graduation equivalence table; the programme pages list only A-level, IB and Highers. Whether the Gaokao is accepted for direct entry is not published; check the programme page and the International students China page, or contact Glasgow’s Beijing and Shanghai offices.
- Foundation: students below the academic requirements are advised to contact Glasgow International College. Its requirements are on its own site, which was not accessed.
- A-level and IB students: apply directly using section 3.
- Joint programmes: Glasgow lists BEng dual degrees with UESTC in Electronics & Electrical Engineering with Microelectronics and with Information Engineering. The Microelectronics page says four years, and the UESTC page says students enter a “4+0” model at the joint Glasgow College, with the chance from Year 2 to apply to study the last two years at Glasgow (2+2), and recommends an English score of 120 out of 150. There is also a joint Mechanical Engineering BEng with SIT, whose entry requirements were not read for this guide, and the College offers discounts to Tianjin University students who complete the first two or three years there and finish at Glasgow. Admission to these follows the partner institutions’ own notices.
- Scholarships: China is on the eligible-country lists for both the World Changers Global Excellence Scholarship and the STEM in Scotland Award.
- Interviews and agents: the engineering pages mention no interview, and no China-specific interview arrangement is published. The China page lists recruitment representatives you can contact.
7. Transfers and entering Year 2
- The admissions guidance says that, as a general rule, Glasgow does not accept transfer applications from UK students at other institutions, with exceptions only for serious personal reasons backed by evidence. Anyone currently studying elsewhere applies through UCAS, must meet the current Higher or A-level requirements, and any offer is likely to be to Year 1.
- Conditions specific to international students transferring into the School of Engineering are not published; ask Admissions. Year 2 entry mainly serves exceptional school leavers (sections 2 and 3) and Scottish HND holders.
- Graduates applying for a second undergraduate degree need at least a 2:2 and must meet the entry requirements of the year they apply.
- Credit transfer and recognition of calculus and physics courses are not published.
8. Placements and course features
- The programme pages do not describe a salaried placement year. The Mechanical Engineering page says practising engineers contribute to lectures and provide employment opportunities, and that students visit a number of UK industries in Year 3.
- MEng students can do the Semester 1 final-year project in industry, at international universities or in Glasgow’s laboratories.
- The Mechanical Engineering page says you can apply to spend a year at an accredited partner university, and MEng students can work on their year 5 project at overseas institutions.
9. Timeline (September 2027 entry)
