How to Apply to Biology at Bangor University: Biology, Biotechnology, Marine Biology and Zoology Routes, Three-Year BSc or Four-Year Integrated Master’s, Applied for by Course Through UCAS — Admission and Entry Requirements for Home, International (Including Chinese) and Year 2 Transfer Applicants
Bangor University’s biology subject page lists biology, biology with biotechnology, marine biology, marine vertebrate conservation and zoology routes: BSc (Hons) over three years, MBiol, MSci or MZool over four, plus a four-year Biology with Foundation Year BSc (C10F). You apply to a specific course through UCAS (code B06); for 2027 entry the initial deadline is 13 January 2027 and later applications are still welcomed. A-Level and IB requirements sit on course pages that load dynamically and are not given on the pages used for this guide. The English level for Biological Sciences is IELTS 6.0 (5.5). The international fee table is headed September 2026 entry and shows £20,000 a year for Biological Sciences and Zoology. The China page accepts Gao Kao, IB 28–34 points or A-Level 112–136 UCAS points.
Bangor University is in Bangor, North Wales. This guide sets out, from the university website, what you need to know about its biology undergraduate degrees for September 2027 entry, for UK home applicants, international applicants (including students at Chinese high schools) and students who want to join Year 2. The website lists no Chemistry undergraduate degree, so this guide covers biology only. The website also lists medical sciences, pharmacology, pharmacy and medicine, which are outside this guide; see the relevant subject pages on the website.
1. Courses and how to choose
- Biology (subject page): Biology BSc (Hons) C100 (3 years), Biology MBiol C101 (4-year integrated master’s), and Biology with Foundation Year BSc C10F (4 years; described as an option for those who do not quite meet the three-year entry requirements).
- Biotechnology: Biology with Biotechnology BSc C511 (3 years) and MBiol C510 (4 years).
- Marine biology: Marine Biology MSci C167 (4 years); Marine Biology and Zoology BSc CC13 (3 years) and MSci C169 (4 years); Marine Vertebrate Conservation BSc C355 (3 years) and MSci C356 (4 years).
- Zoology: Zoology with Conservation BSc C3L2 and MZool CD34; Zoology with Primatology BSc C329 and MZool C333; Zoology with Animal Management MZool C336; Zoology with Herpetology MZool C303; Zoology with Ornithology MZool C334 (all MZool are four years).
- The subject page shows full-time and part-time study modes for these courses. It does not list separate Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics or Neuroscience degrees; if you are looking for those, check the course pages on the website.
- You apply to a specific course by its UCAS code; Bangor’s UCAS institution code is B06. The subject page describes a broad first year that brings everyone to the same level (diversity of organisms, genetics and bioscience skills), a second year with chosen modules and a third-year dissertation project, and field-trip modules in places such as South Africa, India or Arizona as well as locally. Which modules belong to which route is not listed on the subject page; see each course page.
2. Timeline and route (2027 entry)
- Applications go through UCAS: up to five choices, one personal statement for all of them (so the website advises choosing similar courses and not naming a course or university in the statement). The statement is 4,000 characters, you need a reference from someone who knows you academically, and the UCAS fee is paid online by debit or credit card (check the amount on UCAS).
- The application page says that for 2027 entry the initial UCAS deadline is 13 January 2027, and later applications are welcomed; applications received between 25 February and 30 June continue to be forwarded and are considered where places remain. If you have used all five choices and hold no offers, UCAS Extra runs from 25 February to 1 July 2027.
- The website advises applying early because it starts considering applications and making offers straight away.
- The application page does not say whether biology courses need an admissions test or interview; check the course pages or ask admissions.
3. Prerequisites and grades
- A-Level / IB subjects and grades: the application page and the international entry page both say specific requirements are on the course pages. The course pages read for this guide show only the title, UCAS code and apply buttons, with the requirements section loaded dynamically, so whether high-school biology, chemistry or maths are required and at what grades is not given on the pages used for this guide. Check each course page (for example Biology BSc (Hons) C100).
- General entry framework (international entry page): direct entry to Year 1 requires a school-leaving qualification equivalent to British A-levels or the International Baccalaureate; acceptable qualifications by country are on the country pages.
- Foundation year: Biology with Foundation Year (C10F) is a four-year course listed on the subject page; its entry grades are not given on the pages used for this guide.
- Contextual offers: the contextual admissions page says the university uses POLAR4 and WIMD low-participation data and UCAS-supplied indicators (such as free school meals, caring responsibilities, time in care, first in family to attend university) to decide whether to make a lower offer, and that no offer is made on contextual data alone. The page refers to the 2025/26 cycle and September 2026 admission, so check how it applies to 2027.
4. UK home applicants
- Fees: the student finance page says the tuition fee for full-time undergraduate Home students starting in September 2026 is £9,790; the fee for September 2027 “is yet to be set” until the Welsh Government confirms the maximum regulated fee (page last updated 08/09/2026). It says Bangor’s Home fee equals the Welsh Government maximum, which can change from year to year.
- Loans: the page says UK students do not pay the fee upfront and repay after graduation once earning above the threshold; support differs for students from Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the page links to each.
- Detailed rules on who counts as Home or Overseas for fee purposes are not given on the pages used for this guide; ask admissions or check the fees page.
5. International applicants
- Applying: international students can apply through UCAS or through the university’s online application portal (application page), or through authorised agents, which the China page lists. All international applicants must meet both the English language and academic requirements.
- English (English language page, undergraduate table): Biological Sciences IELTS 6.0 (5.5); Ocean Sciences also 6.0 (5.5). The page also accepts TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, LanguageCert Academic and others; see the page for scores. Applicants from majority English-speaking countries may be exempt with at least a C in English at IGCSE/O Level or equivalent.
- Tuition (international fees page): the table is headed “September 2026 entry” (per year); Biological Sciences and Zoology are £20,000; Ocean Science is £21,000. The fee page does not say which band the marine biology courses fall in, and gives no September 2027 figure, so check. The January 2027 column shows “N/A” for Biological Sciences and Zoology. An International Experience Year costs £1,430 and a Placement Year £1,907; check course pages for extra costs such as field trips.
- Scholarships (international scholarships page, undergraduate): Vice-Chancellor Scholarship £10,000; Deans Scholarship £6,000 per year of study; International Scholarship at least £4,000 per year of study; an alumni, existing student and family discount of £1,000 a year on top of the International Scholarship. The International Scholarship page says no separate application is needed — all international applicants are considered when they apply, with the result in the offer letter, entirely at the university’s discretion; fully sponsored candidates are not eligible; it cannot be combined with other Bangor scholarships except the alumni discount, and is paid per year subject to progression. The Deans Scholarship page says undergraduates need achieved or predicted grades of AAB or above and must be on a full 3- or 4-year on-campus degree, not entering Year 2 or 3 directly. The Vice-Chancellor Scholarship needs an offer first and a separate application; for September 2027 entry the deadline is 28 May 2027, with 10 awards, and it asks for A grades or equivalent in at least half of subjects plus extra-curricular achievements.
6. Applicants from China
- Gao Kao and other qualifications: the China page says undergraduate applicants must meet one of the following: pass the Chinese university entrance exam (Gao Kao); a good senior-school grade plus a one-year Foundation Programme; a college graduation diploma (Dazhuan); a graduation diploma from a selected partner institution; an IB Diploma with 28–34 points; or A-levels with 112–136 UCAS points. Specific A-Level or IB requirements are on course pages. US high school qualifications are also accepted. The page gives no Gao Kao score and no biology-specific Gao Kao or subject requirements; ask admissions.
- International pathway: the China page says applicants who do not qualify for direct entry may be considered for International Year Zero, the first year of the four-year International Incorporated Bachelor (IIB), taught at Bangor University International College with Oxford International Education Group; it asks for Senior 2 completion with at least 60%, or 55% overall and at least 60% in relevant subjects. The BUIC IIB page lists subject routes in business and management, engineering and computer science, and law, media, psychology and social sciences, and does not list biology; whether a biology route exists is not given on the pages used for this guide, so ask admissions. The Biology with Foundation Year course (C10F) is a separate route whose entry grades are on the course page.
- English: the China page gives IELTS 6.0 (5.5) or equivalent (some courses higher) and also accepts TEM-8, TEM-4 and CET-6 results that include an oral element, or after a short online oral interview.
- The page notes that the university has authorised agents in China, and students can also apply directly.
7. Transfer students (direct entry to Year 2)
- The international entry page says you can transfer into Year 2 if earlier study at another university (UK or overseas) matches Bangor’s first year in level and content; you must supply an official certified transcript. The China page adds that Year 2 entry will be considered for students with an HND or at least one year at a university overseas or in the UK.
- The pages used for this guide give no grade average, required modules, credit-transfer rules or deadline for biology courses; ask admissions. Note that the Deans and Vice-Chancellor Scholarship pages both say they are not open to students entering Year 2 or 3 directly.
8. Checklist
- Pick the course and UCAS code (for example C100, C511, CC13); Bangor’s UCAS code is B06.
- The initial UCAS deadline for 2027 entry is 13 January 2027, and later applications are still welcomed.
- Check each course page for A-Level/IB subjects and grades and for whether high-school biology and chemistry are required; international students should also ask how Gao Kao is used.
- Rely on Bangor’s fee page; the table is headed September 2026 entry, so check 2027.
