Funding and Application Timeline for University Applications in Germany: Proof of Funds at 992 Euros per Month and Application Deadlines

2026-10-04 · Guides

According to the "Information on Student Visas" (January 2025 edition) from the German Embassy in China, student visa applicants must prove they have at least 992 euros per month, or at least 11,904 euros per year; those entering as university applicants must show 1,091 euros per month. This article outlines the methods for proving funds, common deadlines and processing times for uni-assist, and tuition fees in Baden-Württemberg, helping families targeting 2027 admissions work backwards to plan their timeline.

When applying to universities in Germany, finances and time are the first two things to figure out. According to the "Information on Study Visas" (January 2025 edition) from the German Embassy in China, obtaining a student visa requires proof of at least 992 euros per month during your stay in Germany. You must provide proof of funds for at least one year upon submission, which means at least 11,904 euros. Regarding application timelines, for schools applying through uni-assist, the common deadline for the winter semester is July 15, and for the summer semester, it is January 15. It is also recommended to submit your application at least 8 weeks in advance.

As for whether this amount will increase for 2026/2027, as of October 4, 2026, we have not seen any new figures on the official pages we checked. Before submitting your visa application, please refer to the latest information sheet from the embassy.

Proof of Funds: How Much and What to Use

The embassy's information sheet outlines two tiers of requirements:

Entry StatusPer MonthPer Year
Student Visa (admitted and studying)992 euros11,904 euros
Student Applicant (applying to schools after entry)1,091 euros13,092 euros

A few notes:

  • When submitting your application, you must provide proof of funds for at least one year. If your intended stay is less than a year, the total amount can be reduced accordingly.
  • Funds can be proven in three ways: scholarships, a blocked account (Sperrkonto, commonly known as a frozen account), or a formal letter of financial guarantee.
  • The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) website also states that, from January 1, 2025, you need to prove access to 992 euros per month.
  • The embassy's information sheet also lists the visa fees: 75 euros, and 37.5 euros for minors under 18.
  • For applications using Chinese educational credentials, the visa documents must also include an APS review certificate or proof. Exceptions can be found on the APS website.

The amounts mentioned here are only the minimum requirements for the visa and do not equal actual expenses. Rent, insurance, and semester fees vary significantly across different cities. We recommend families leave a buffer in their budgets beyond these minimums.

Tuition Fees: Generally Free at Public Universities, with Exceptions in Baden-Württemberg

The DAAD website states that undergraduate and most master's programs at public universities in Germany generally do not charge tuition fees, but students must pay a semester fee each semester. This varies by university, ranging from about 70 to 430 euros. Baden-Württemberg is an exception: it charges tuition fees for non-EU students, at 1,500 euros per semester.

If your target university is in Baden-Württemberg, studying a two-year master's program would mean 4 semesters times 1,500 euros in tuition alone. For specific fees and exemption rules, please refer to the university's official website.

Application Timelines: Common uni-assist Deadlines and Processing Times

Many German universities use uni-assist to centrally review applications from international students. Information provided on the uni-assist website:

  • Common deadlines: Usually July 15 for the winter semester and January 15 for the summer semester.
  • Universities can set their own: Deadlines may vary for undergraduate and master's programs, restricted admission programs (NC), and applicants of different nationalities or educational backgrounds. Some programs have much earlier deadlines.
  • Submit 8 weeks in advance: This allows time for uni-assist to request additional documents if needed.
  • Processing time: Once all documents are complete, results generally take 4 to 6 weeks; for Asian applicants, it takes about 4 to 5 weeks. The time is calculated from the receipt of the online application form.

Take the Technical University of Munich (TUM) as an example. The university states that application periods for undergraduate and master's programs are determined by each individual program and must be checked on the specific program's page. Therefore, you cannot just remember a single "July 15" deadline; you need to check each target program individually.

Reverse Timeline: Example for Winter Semester 2027 Enrollment

A relatively safe sequence to follow:

  1. Complete the APS review first. Without an APS certificate, you cannot apply to many universities or obtain a visa. The review requires queuing and preparation, so it is recommended to put this at the very beginning.
  2. Prepare language test scores concurrently. English-taught programs require IELTS or TOEFL, while German-taught programs require German language certificates. Requirements depend on the specific program.
  3. List the actual deadlines for your target programs. Check each university's website one by one, find the earliest deadline, and count back 8 weeks to set your target submission date for uni-assist.
  4. Arrange your funds in advance. Opening a blocked account and transferring funds takes time. Doing this after receiving an admission offer will be very rushed.
  5. Book your visa appointment. Prepare your documents according to the embassy's latest information sheet and confirm whether the financial requirements have been updated.
