2026-10-04 · Guides

University Admissions, Sweden's centralized university application platform, has announced the timeline for the first round (international student round) for Fall 2027: applications open on October 16, 2026, and close on January 15, 2027, with an application fee of 900 SEK. Additionally, new student visa rules take effect on June 11, 2026, limiting part-time work during studies to 15 hours per week.

For students planning to pursue a bachelor's or master's degree in Sweden in Fall 2027, the application window is about to open: the first round (international round) of University Admissions, Sweden's unified application platform, opens on October 16, 2026, and closes on January 15, 2027. Meanwhile, new student residence regulations from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) took effect on June 11, 2026, introducing new requirements for working, academic progress, and address registration.

The following information is compiled from the official websites of University Admissions and the Swedish Migration Agency as of October 4, 2026. Please refer to the latest official information.

First Round Application Timeline

Bachelor's and master's programs in Sweden are applied for through universityadmissions.se. Fall admission is divided into two rounds. The first round is exclusively for international students and opens earlier to allow time for tuition payment, residence permit processing, and housing arrangements.

Program ranking is crucial. University Admissions reminds applicants that the ranking of courses and programs will affect admission results and cannot be changed after January 15.

The Second Round Is Usually Too Late

The second round opens on March 15, 2027, closes on April 15, and releases results on July 9. The official website states that this round is primarily for students residing in Sweden, and many English-taught programs are no longer open during this round. Non-EU students who need a residence permit can apply, but most will not have enough time to obtain it.

Therefore, students applying for Fall 2027 admission should primarily focus on the first round.

Application Fee: 900 SEK

Students from non-EU/EEA/Swiss countries are required to pay an application fee:

  • The amount is 900 SEK;
  • It is paid only once per semester, regardless of the number of programs applied for or rounds participated in;
  • The application fee is an administrative fee and is non-refundable;
  • Payment can be made by credit card or bank transfer. For bank transfers, ensure the received amount is exactly 900 SEK. The applicant bears any transaction fees and must include the reference number.

Late payment will result in the application status being marked as late.

New Student Visa Rules Effective June 11, 2026

The new regulations passed by the Swedish Parliament and effective June 11 apply to those applying for or holding a residence permit for bachelor's or master's level studies. Key points include:

  • Work restrictions: Maximum 15 hours per week during the semester; no limit in June, July, and August. Work related to teaching, student representation, administration, internships, or research at the enrolled institution or related to the program may be exempt from this limit.
  • Higher academic progress requirements: Full-time students must complete 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits annually from the second year onward. Insufficient progress may lead to permit revocation or non-renewal.
  • Address registration: You must register your address with the Migration Agency within 30 days of receiving your permit and within 30 days of changing your address in Sweden. Those already registered in the population register are exempt from this requirement.
  • Harder to switch to other permits within Sweden: For example, switching to a work permit generally requires having completed at least the equivalent of two semesters of studies.
  • Post-graduation exception: After completing at least two semesters and obtaining a degree certificate, you can work unlimited hours during the validity of your permit (provided you do not apply for a new bachelor's or master's student residence permit).

For those who obtained their residence permit before June 11, the work restrictions, academic progress, and address registration requirements do not apply temporarily and will take effect after a renewal is approved. Applications submitted before June 11 but decided on or after June 11 are subject to the new rules.
