Applying to Universities in Spain: Student Residence Financial Requirements Based on IPREM and the UNEDasiss Timeline

2026-10-04 · Guides

The financial requirement for a long-term student residence in Spain is 100% of the IPREM per month. Visa applications should be submitted at least two months before classes start, and the consulate takes up to one month to make a decision. The UNEDasiss accreditation, commonly used for public university applications, opens on February 4 and closes on December 1 each year. This article compiles official information from Spain to help you plan your timeline backward.

To pursue a bachelor's or master's degree in Spain, there are two things to calculate in advance: first, the financial requirements for a student visa, which is set at 100% IPREM per month (Spain's official public income indicator); second, the UNEDasiss accreditation for applying to public universities, which opens on February 4 and closes on December 1 each year. The visa must be applied for at least 2 months before the start of the semester, and the consulate takes up to 1 month to make a decision. Below, we have organized the requirements and timeline based on information from the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Migration) and the UNEDasiss official website.

Understanding the Visa Type

For degree programs in Spain lasting more than 90 days, you need a "long-term residence permit for higher education or post-secondary education." When applying from China, you must first obtain a student visa. The Ministry's information page was last updated in November 2025, based on EU Directive 2016/801, the Spanish Aliens Act (Organic Law 4/2000), and Royal Decree 1155/2024, passed on November 19, 2024 (the new regulations implementing the Aliens Act).

Applicable higher education includes official university degrees or university-specific degrees, higher artistic education, and higher vocational education, which can be full-time in-person or hybrid.

Financial Requirements

CategoryMonthly Financial Requirement
Primary student100% IPREM
First accompanying family member75% IPREM
Each additional accompanying family member50% IPREM

A few notes:

  • Exception for prepaid accommodation: If you can prove that accommodation fees for the entire stay have been paid in advance, the above standards do not apply (the same applies to family members).
  • Tuition fees excluded: Money used to pay tuition fees is not counted as living funds. In other words, tuition fees must be prepared separately.
  • Return travel funds: Funds must cover living expenses in Spain and return travel costs.
  • Exact IPREM amount: IPREM is published annually by the Spanish government. The specific euro amount for 2026 could not be verified on the official page at the time of writing; please refer to the official IPREM published by Spain for the current year. You can estimate it by calculating "100% IPREM per month × number of months in Spain".

Other Basic Requirements

  • Age: You must be at least 17 years old to apply for a higher education visa at the consulate.
  • Admission and enrollment fees: You must be admitted to a recognized higher education institution for a full-time program leading to a recognized degree, and have paid the registration or enrollment fee.
  • Health insurance: You must purchase health insurance from a company authorized to operate in Spain, with coverage equivalent to the basic services of the Spanish National Health System.
  • Criminal record certificate: Adults staying for more than 6 months must provide a criminal record certificate from Spain and any country they have lived in over the past 5 years.
  • Medical certificate: Applicants applying from abroad must provide a medical certificate proving they do not have any diseases that could have a serious impact on public health.
  • Passport: Must be valid for at least one year.
  • Application fee: Pay as required.

Timeline

StepOfficial Requirement
Visa submissionAt least 2 months before the start of the semester
Submission locationIn person or by a representative at the Spanish embassy or consulate in the applicant's consular district
Consulate decisionUp to 1 month, calculated from the day after submission
No response within deadlineMay be considered a rejection
Residence permit durationSame as the entire duration of the higher education program

There is an exception to the "at least 2 months in advance" rule: if it is genuinely impossible due to the school's registration dates or other reasons, you can explain the situation. However, the safest approach is to prepare your documents as soon as you receive your admission letter, rather than waiting until right before the semester starts.

If you need to extend your stay after arriving in Spain, you can apply for an extension electronically within 2 months before or 3 months after your permit expires, provided you can prove your studies are ongoing.

What is UNEDasiss

UNEDasiss is a service provided by the National University of Distance Education (UNED). After international students submit their applications online, pay the fees, and upload their academic documents, they can obtain an "accreditation" (acreditación) used to apply to Spanish universities, which includes their admission score. You should check with your target schools to confirm which universities and programs require it.

PCE stands for Specific Competence Tests (Pruebas de Competencias Específicas), which are used to improve your admission score. For overseas test centers, the exact dates are subject to your admission ticket. The official website also warns that dates may be adjusted, so you should re-download and verify your ticket one week before the exam.

Regarding the public university deadline for the 2026/27 academic year, UNEDasiss advises that if you have not yet received your accreditation by July 7, you should still submit your university application first and provide the missing documents by July 31. Pre-registration for most public universities closes in early July, but this may vary by school, so you should check directly with the university.

UNEDasiss takes up to 3 months to process an application, though it usually takes about 3 weeks if all documents are complete. The official recommendation is to submit your accreditation application at least 6 weeks before the university application deadline, and to complete the online form, payment, and document uploads simultaneously.

UNEDasiss has not yet announced the specific dates for 2027, and they could not be verified at the time of writing. You can plan based on the 2026 schedule for now and refer to the official website for updates.

Suggested Timeline for 2027 Enrollment

  • Now to December 1: The 2026 accreditation window is still open. If you already have complete academic documents, you can learn about the process and prepare your notarized and authenticated materials.
  • From February 2027: The new year's accreditation window is expected to open (subject to the official website); submit as early as possible.
  • Spring 2027: If you need to take the PCE, keep an eye on the registration dates.
  • Around July 2027: Public university applications close; submit your accreditation application more than 6 weeks in advance.
  • After receiving admission: Prepare proof of funds, insurance, criminal record certificate, and medical certificate, and apply for the visa at least 2 months before the semester starts.
