Austria Student Residence Financial Requirements: EUR 722.58 per month for applicants under 24

2026-10-04 · Guides

According to official OeAD guidelines, when applying for an Austrian student residence permit in 2026, applicants under 24 must prove EUR 722.58 per month, while those aged 24 and over must prove EUR 1,308.39 per month, covering a 12-month period in advance. Permit holders are authorized to work up to 20 hours per week and can extend their permit for 12 months after graduation to seek employment or start a business.

For students from non-EU countries pursuing a degree at an Austrian university, the applicable residence title is the "Residence Permit – Student". According to the official guidelines from the Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalisation (OeAD), the financial requirements for 2026 are divided into two age brackets: EUR 722.58 per month for those under 24, and EUR 1,308.39 per month for those aged 24 and above, and applicants must prove funding for 12 months in advance. During the permit's validity, students can obtain a work permit for up to 20 hours per week; after graduation, the residence permit can be extended for another 12 months to look for a job or start a business.

Age 24 is the cutoff. For the same one-year period, the requirement for those aged 24 and above is nearly double that for those under 24, so families should check the student's age carefully when preparing funds.

Proof of Funds: Two Tiers, Prepared for 12 Months

Applicant's AgeMonthly Requirement (2026)12-Month Total (Monthly Requirement x 12)
Under 24EUR 722.58EUR 8,670.96
24 and aboveEUR 1,308.39EUR 15,700.68

Regarding the form of funds, OeAD specifies that the money must be deposited in a savings passbook or bank account opened in the applicant's own name (which can be overseas) and must be accessible in Austria. Applicants must also declare the source of funds.

A few reminders:

  • The table above shows the 2026 requirements. These may change; students enrolling in 2027 should check the OeAD website again before submitting their application.
  • This is only the minimum requirement for the residence permit, not the actual expenses. Tuition, rent, and insurance are calculated separately, so families should leave a buffer in their budget.
  • Holding funds in an account under the applicant's own name is a stated requirement on the OeAD website. Whether alternative methods, such as using a parent's account or a guarantor, are acceptable depends on the specific requirements of the embassy, consulate, and residence authorities.

Where and When to Apply

According to OeAD:

  • Where to submit: Initial applications are generally submitted at the Austrian embassy or consulate in the applicant's country of residence.
  • When to submit: OeAD recommends submitting the initial application 6 months in advance if possible.
  • Processing time: The decision period is 90 days; if additional documents are required, it can be extended by another 90 days.
  • Application fee: EUR 218 per application.

The decision period can take up to 180 days. If enrolling in the fall, start the process as soon as you receive your admission letter; do not wait until a month or two before classes begin.

Required Documents for the Initial Application

Documents required for the initial application listed by OeAD include:

  • Valid passport
  • Passport photos
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Declaration of the source of funds
  • Proof of accommodation in Austria for at least 3 months
  • Proof of health insurance covering all risks
  • Certificate of no criminal record
  • Letter of admission from an Austrian university

Requirements for the authentication, translation, and validity of various documents are subject to the latest guidelines on the OeAD website and from the local embassy or consulate.

After Arriving in Austria

  • Register your address: Within 3 working days of arriving in Austria, you must register your address at the local registration office.
  • Initial validity: If all conditions are met, the student residence permit is initially issued for 12 months.
  • Health insurance: Degree-seeking students can enroll in local student self-insurance; the OeAD website states the monthly premium for 2026 is EUR 78.84.
  • Renewal timing: Renewals must be applied for at the residence authority in Austria before the current permit expires, and can be submitted as early as 3 months before expiration.
  • Academic progress for renewal: Renewal requires proof of academic progress, with the standard being 8 semester hours per academic year, or 16 ECTS credits per academic year.

Academic progress is a strict condition for renewal. Taking too few courses or failing exams in the first year could affect your renewal. Keep this in mind once classes start.

Working: Up to 20 Hours Per Week

According to OeAD, students holding a student residence permit can obtain a work permit for up to 20 hours per week, without undergoing a labor market test.

Note that this means you "can obtain a work permit," not that no permit is needed. The specific procedures are subject to official Austrian guidelines. Income from working is generally only supplementary and cannot replace the proof of funds required before going abroad.

After Graduation: 12-Month Extension to Find a Job or Start a Business

According to OeAD, students who complete their studies on a student residence permit can apply to extend their permit for another 12 months to look for a job or start a business. After this period, they can switch to other residence titles, with examples listed by OeAD including the Red-White-Red Card.

This is for informational purposes only: whether a switch is possible and what conditions must be met depend on the specific regulations of each residence title, as well as individual circumstances. This article does not constitute immigration or legal advice. Information as of October 4, 2026, is based on the OeAD website; if policies change, the latest official Austrian announcements shall prevail.

Preparation Advice for Families of 2027 Enrollees

  1. Check the age first. Whether the student turns 24 before enrollment determines which financial tier applies.
  2. Save the funds early. Deposit the 12-month requirement into an account in the student's own name and prepare the declaration of the source of funds.
  3. Apply as soon as admitted. OeAD recommends submitting the initial application 6 months in advance, and the processing period can take up to 180 days.
  4. Secure accommodation and insurance simultaneously. Proof of at least 3 months of accommodation and health insurance are mandatory for the initial application.
  5. Keep a close eye on credits after enrollment. 16 ECTS credits per academic year is the threshold for renewal.
