University of Michigan Fall 2027 Application Changes: Early Selection Canceled for Computer Science; Early Action Open for Architecture

2026-10-11 · Admissions news

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor has announced changes to the Fall 2027 freshman application process: early selection for Computer Science is canceled, an Early Action option is added for the Architecture program, and the standardized test score submission deadline is clarified.

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor has released its latest policies for the 2026-2027 application cycle. This update primarily targets first-year students applying for Fall 2027 admission, involving adjustments to the admissions process for certain majors and clarifications on standardized test submission rules.

Key Impacts and Recommendations for Chinese Applicants

  • Computer Science Major Eliminates Advance Selection: The Computer Science major within the College of Engineering and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts has eliminated the advance selection process. This means students applying to the Computer Science major no longer need to go through an additional early screening and can apply through the regular process.
  • New Early Application Option for the Architecture School: The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has added an Early Action application option. Interested students should pay attention to the early round.
  • Standardized Test Submission Deadlines: The university continues its test-optional policy; not submitting ACT/SAT scores will not disadvantage applicants. If you choose to submit scores, please note the following deadlines:

Students applying Early Decision or Early Action who choose to submit test scores must self-report their scores through the application system by November 1. Late submissions will be reviewed as test-optional.

If you choose not to submit test scores in the early application round, this decision cannot be changed during the early review stage. However, students who are deferred or apply Regular Decision may submit their scores by February 1, 2027.

The university uses a superscore policy, considering the highest section scores across multiple test dates.

Adjustments to Other Majors and Programs

  • The School of Public Health offers a preferred admission option through the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Students complete prerequisite courses first and transfer into the school in their junior year upon meeting the requirements.
  • Applicants to the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) program at the University of Michigan who are not selected may opt to be considered for undergraduate programs at the Ross School of Business or the College of Engineering.
  • Applicants to the Marsal School of Education must submit an asynchronous video interview.
  • The previous preferred admission option to the Ross School of Business for College of Engineering students has been discontinued.

Students and parents applying for Fall 2027 admission are advised to plan their standardized tests and application materials in advance according to the deadlines mentioned above. For specific admissions preferences for each major and detailed video interview requirements, please refer to the university's official updates.
