UNSW 2027 Intake: Gaokao Admission Based on Overall Average Percentage, 80% for Business, 75% for Engineering; New TOEFL Format Not Accepted for Now

2026-10-12 · Admissions news

UNSW 2027 international undergraduate admission requirements are based on the overall average percentage of the Gaokao: 70% for Arts and Science, 75% for Engineering and Economics, 80% for Business and Advanced Computer Science, 91% for Actuarial Studies, and 90% for Medicine. In provinces with a total score of 750, 70% equals 525. For English proficiency, the new TOEFL format is not accepted for now; registrants must select "TOEFL for Australia," and Duolingo is not on the accepted list.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) has released the 2027 International Undergraduate Entry Requirements Table, which outlines the Gaokao requirements for each undergraduate program.

How the Gaokao Score is Calculated

Scores are calculated based on the average percentage across all Gaokao subjects, with the maximum score for each province subject to the annual announcement by the Chinese government. Reference scores listed in the entry table: for provinces with a maximum score of 750, 70% is 525 and 90% is 675; for Hainan (maximum 940), 630 to 810; for Shanghai (maximum 660), 462 to 594.

Gaokao Requirements for Select Programs (2027 Intake)

  • 70% (approx. 525 for provinces with a 750 maximum): Bachelor of Arts, Design, Media, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Psychological Science, Aviation (Flight).
  • 75% (approx. 563): Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Economics, Information Systems, Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), Cyber Security, Data Science and Decisions, Advanced Science (Honours), Medical Science, Architecture, Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Bachelor of Medical Science / Master of Pharmacy.
  • 80% (600): Bachelor of Commerce, Advanced Computer Science (Honours), Psychology (Honours), Combined Law Degrees, Engineering + Commerce.
  • 86% (645): Bachelor of Commerce (International).
  • 90% (675): Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine (B Medical Studies/MD); additional ISAT or UCAT ANZ required.
  • 91% (approx. 683): Bachelor of Actuarial Studies.

Scores in parentheses are converted based on a maximum of 750 and are for reference only. For double degrees, the higher requirement of the two programs applies; Aviation (Flight) and the Music stream in Fine Arts have additional selection requirements.

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS Academic: Engineering, Science, Art & Design and Architecture, and most Health and Medical programs: 6.5 (6.0 in each band); Business School and Law: 7.0 (6.0 in each band); select Medical and Health programs such as Medicine and Pharmacy: 7.0 (6.0 in each band). IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted; the online version is not.
  • TOEFL iBT: Most programs: 90 (Writing 23, other bands 22); Business School and Law: 94 (Writing 25, others 23). TOEFL MyBest Scores are not accepted.
  • Note: UNSW has stated that the new TOEFL format is under review and is not currently accepted; during this period, test-takers must select "Taking TOEFL for Australia".
  • PTE Academic: Most programs: 64 (54 in each communicative skill); Business and Law: 65 (54 in each communicative skill). Starting in Term 1, 2027, LanguageCert Academic and the Michigan English Test (MET) will also be accepted. Duolingo is not on the accepted list.
  • English test results must be obtained within two years prior to the start of the program.

Application Reminders

  • All undergraduate programs release offers in multiple rounds: applications submitted before each round's deadline are ranked by academic merit, with places offered to the highest-ranked candidates; the number of offers per round depends on program capacity.
  • Once a faculty's quota is filled, subsequent applications are assessed for the next available intake; popular or limited-capacity programs such as Business and Medicine may reach capacity before the deadline, so early application is advised.
  • Starting in 2028, UNSW will transition to a new flex-semester academic calendar; students commencing in 2027 may have their studies span both the old and new systems.
