Yale Financial Aid Regardless of Citizenship: At Least Free Tuition Below $200,000 in Family Income, Full Cost Below $100,000; International Aid Materials Due December 1
Yale admits students without regard to ability to pay and meets 100% of demonstrated need regardless of citizenship, without loans. Families earning under $100,000 with typical assets pay nothing; under $200,000, aid covers at least tuition. International applicants indicate interest on their application; Early Action aid materials are due December 1.
Yale University's admissions financial aid page states that a family's ability to pay is not a factor in admissions, for any student, anywhere in the world. All aid is awarded on the basis of demonstrated need, meets 100% of demonstrated need regardless of a student's citizenship or immigration status, and comes as scholarships rather than loans.
What families pay
- Family income below $100,000 with typical assets: A zero parent share award covering tuition and fees, housing, food and travel, plus hospitalization insurance and a $2,000 start-up grant in the first year.
- Family income below $200,000 with typical assets: A need-based scholarship covering at least the full cost of tuition.
- Yale's table of what a typical family pays per year: $0 at $100,000 income; about $10,000 at $150,000; about $20,000 at $200,000; about $43,000 at $250,000; about $53,000 at $300,000; about $63,000 at $350,000.
- The average annual need-based scholarship is $75,220; 21% of students' families pay nothing.
Yale does not limit these income figures to U.S. families. They describe typical families with typical assets; the actual award depends on a counselor's review of income, assets, family size and other factors. Yale's cost calculators give a personalized estimate.
How international applicants apply for aid
- Indicate interest in need-based aid on the Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge application; Yale's Undergraduate Financial Aid office will contact you with the required documents.
- All aid applicants submit the CSS Profile (Yale code 3987); Yale does not accept the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) in its place.
- Financial information is required from both parents, even if they are divorced or separated.
Priority aid deadlines for 2027–28
- Early Action (international citizens): December 1, 2026 (November 1 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents).
- Regular Decision: February 15, 2027.
Submitting on time means you receive an aid decision when you are admitted.
Advice for families
- Applying for aid does not affect admission at Yale, so families who need aid can request it with their application and submit materials by the priority deadline.
