2026-10-17 · Application guides

The University of Bristol’s BSc Psychology (UCAS code C801) is BPS-accredited and runs for three years. Typical offers are A*AA at A-level (with an A in a science-related subject) or 38 IB points, with IELTS 7.0 (7.0 in writing, 6.5 in other skills). Applications are scored mainly on GCSE and A-level results, personal statements are normally not considered, and transfers into Years 2 and 3 are never accepted. Chinese students can apply with the Senior High School Graduation Diploma plus three APs (normally at 5) or through Bristol’s International Foundation Programme; BC students need an 85%–90% average in five grade 12 subjects. This guide covers September 2027 entry based on Bristol’s official information.

The University of Bristol’s BSc Psychology has UCAS course code C801 (institution code B78), is taught on the Clifton campus and runs for three years full-time. The same admissions statement covers the MSci Psychology and Neuroscience and the BSc Psychology with Innovation. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Bristol’s official information, for students at high schools in China (including A-level, IB and AP students at international schools), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.

1. The course

  • BPS accreditation: the degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society and opens the door to professional training.
  • Content: social, cognitive, developmental, biological and individual differences psychology, plus topics such as drug use and addiction, climate and behaviour change and social neuroscience, with strong training in research design and data analysis and an original research project in the final year.
  • Length: three years full-time; part-time study is not available. The course page does not list a placement year or year abroad.

2. Entry requirements: A-level, IB and AP

  • A-level: standard offer A*AA including an A in a science-related subject (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Further Mathematics, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or Statistics). Eligible UK applicants can receive a contextual offer of AAB.
  • IB: 38 points with 18 at Higher Level, including 6 at HL in a science-related subject.
  • GCSE: grade 6 or B in Mathematics (higher numeracy requirement).
  • Selection: applications are scored and ranked on achieved or predicted results, weighted GCSE 20% and A-level 80%. Personal statements and references are not normally considered, except to separate applicants with identical scores. Interviews are not routine.
  • Alternatives: unsuitable applicants may be offered consideration for a related course.

3. Students at high schools in China

  • Senior High School Diploma plus AP: applicants with the Senior High School Graduation Diploma (or a diploma from a US-accredited school) and at least three AP tests are considered. The standard requirement is 5 in each AP and a strong school transcript. Required subjects must be met with APs, and any course requiring maths needs AP Calculus BC at 5. The China page does not mention direct entry with the Gaokao.
  • Foundation: students who complete Bristol’s one-year International Foundation Programme (IFP) or an appropriate partner programme and meet degree requirements are considered. Both the Arts, Law and Social Sciences pathway and the STEM pathway prepare students for psychology. IFP entry for mainland China requires Senior Middle 3 with an 80% average and 85% in required subjects, or Senior Middle 2 with 85% and 85% in required subjects; some degrees require higher grades.
  • International school students: A-levels and the IB as above.
  • University students: those who have completed the first year of a degree at an acceptable Chinese university are considered for Year 1.

4. Students at Canadian high schools

  • British Columbia, Yukon and Nunavut: a Grade 12 Senior Secondary Diploma with an 85%–90% average in five grade 12 subjects.
  • Other provinces: Ontario requires the OSSD with an 80%–90% average in six grade 12 U/M courses (some courses specify U subject grades), studied in person at a public or eligible private school, not online; Alberta and several other provinces require 80%–90% in five grade 12 subjects; Quebec requires a DEC with an 80%–90% average.
  • Since psychology asks for a science-related subject at A-level, Canadian applicants should also be strong in math and science.

5. Transfer students

  • Transfers into Years 2 and 3 are not considered in any circumstances.
  • Applicants who have completed the first year of a degree must still meet the published GCSE and A-level (or equivalent) requirements.

6. English requirements

  • If English is not your first language: IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in writing and 6.5 in all other skills; or GCSE English Language at B/6; or another qualification in Bristol’s Profile level B.

7. Fees and scholarships

  • Tuition: £10,050 for home students and £34,700 for international students in the first year; fees are reviewed annually and international fees rise with expected inflation.
  • Think Big Scholarships: Bristol’s flagship scheme for students with overseas fee status, with undergraduate awards of £6,500 or £13,000 for up to four years; one application is matched to every scholarship you are eligible for. Applications for the 2026 entry round closed on 10 April 2026; check Bristol for 2027 arrangements.

8. Timeline for September 2027 entry

  • 1 September 2026: UCAS applications can be submitted.
  • Mid-January 2027: UCAS January deadline for guaranteed equal consideration (Bristol lists 13 January).
  • Because of high demand, Bristol may hold some applications until May. Applicants who apply by the January deadline receive a decision by the UCAS May deadline at the latest; most decisions come earlier.
