How to Apply to Psychology at the University of Warwick: A-Level and IB Requirements for BSc Psychology, and Routes and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
The University of Warwick’s Psychology BSc (UCAS code C800) is BPS-accredited, runs for three years, and offers an optional intercalated year abroad or on placement between Years 2 and 3. Typical offers are AAB at A-level with a science (AAA without one) or 34/36 IB points, with English Band B (IELTS 6.5, 6.0 in each component). Chinese senior high school graduates need a foundation programme, while students with a year at a listed Chinese university and a strong Gaokao may enter Year 1 directly; BC students convert from five grade 12 courses, with AAB equal to 83% and AAA to 85%. This guide covers September 2027 entry based on Warwick’s official information.
The University of Warwick’s Psychology BSc is offered by the Department of Psychology, UCAS course code C800, starting on 27 September 2027. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Warwick’s official information, for students at high schools in China (including A-level and IB students at international schools), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. The course
- BPS accreditation: accredited by the British Psychological Society, with an emphasis on practical work.
- Length: three years full-time, or four with an intercalated year between Years 2 and 3, either abroad at a partner institution or on a placement you source.
- Structure: Years 1 and 2 are mostly core accredited modules, with options from across the university such as business, biology, economics, sociology, philosophy or a language; there is a research project each year, culminating in an individual project and six psychology options in Year 3.
- Other: a departmental careers consultant. Warwick does not typically interview; offers are based on predicted and achieved grades, the personal statement and the school reference.
2. Entry requirements: A-level and IB
- A-level: typical offer AAB including a science from Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Biology, Human Biology or Physics, or AAA/A*AB without a science. You also need GCSE Mathematics or Statistics at 6/B, and a GCSE science at 6/B if you are not taking Biology, Chemistry or Physics at A-level.
- IB: 34 including Higher Level Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Physics, or 36 without a science at HL. The GCSE maths and science requirements can also be met with 4 at HL or 5 at SL in IB Mathematics and a science.
- Contextual offers: eligible UK applicants may receive offers one or two grades lower (ABB or AAB).
3. Students at high schools in China
- Senior high school graduates: Warwick requires a foundation programme such as the Warwick International Foundation Programme (IFP). IFP graduates who apply through UCAS receive a guaranteed conditional offer for selected related courses.
- One year of university plus the Gaokao: students who complete the first year of a degree at a listed Chinese university with excellent grades and a Tier 1 Gaokao score may be eligible for direct entry to Year 1. The AAB equivalent is 80% in the Gaokao (80% in specified subjects) and at least 83% in first-year university study (depending on the university); the AAA equivalent is 85% in the Gaokao and at least 83%.
- CEIS: applicants through the China Excellence Identification Scheme have separate requirements based on Gaokao percentages and subject scores.
- International school students: apply for Year 1 with A-levels or the IB as above.
4. Students at Canadian high schools
- British Columbia (and Yukon): the average across five grade 12 academic or AP courses, including subject requirements and with no overlap. For psychology, AAB equals 83% and AAA equals 85% (without a science).
- Other provinces: Alberta also uses five courses (AAB at 83%); Ontario uses six.
- English: applicants from Canada, or who completed at least one academic year in English in Canada within the past two years, may be accepted without an English qualification. English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 at 85% also meets Band B.
5. Transfer students
- The course page gives no route into Year 2. Chinese university students can use the one-year-plus-Gaokao route into Year 1 described above.
6. English requirements (Band B)
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, in one sitting; One Skill Retake is not accepted.
