How to Apply to Psychology at the University of Sheffield: A Three-Year BPS-Accredited BSc, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-17 · Application guides

The University of Sheffield’s Psychology BSc (UCAS C800) is a three-year course accredited by the British Psychological Society, with an optional placement year. The standard offer is AAB at A Level including a science, or 34 in the IB; the Gaokao is accepted for direct entry, and BC students need an 80% average in five Grade 12 subjects. Based on Sheffield’s official information for September 2027 entry, this guide covers qualification requirements, English, transfer, international fees and automatic scholarships.

The University of Sheffield is in the north of England, and psychology is taught by the School of Psychology. In the UK you apply directly to a course through UCAS; Psychology BSc is UCAS code C800. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Sheffield’s official information, for students at high schools in China (including A Level and IB students at international schools), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.

1. The course

  • Psychology BSc: three years full time, starting in September. Years one and two cover cognitive, developmental, social and health psychology, neuroscience and clinical psychology, and research methods; in year three you choose specialist modules and complete a research project of about six months.
  • BPS accreditation: the course is accredited by the British Psychological Society. Passing the empirical project with at least a 2:2 gives Graduate Membership (GMBPsS), the first step to becoming a chartered psychologist and necessary for postgraduate courses in clinical, health, forensic and occupational psychology.
  • Placement and study abroad: you can opt into a placement year after arriving, turning the degree into four years (usually after year two), or spend a year abroad between years two and three. In 2027/28, placement students pay 20% of the full-time fee and year-abroad students 15%.
  • Related course: Education and Psychology BSc (UCAS C812), also BPS-accredited, with a typical offer of ABB.

2. Academic requirements: high schools in China

  • A Level: AAB including a science subject (Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Psychology or Statistics). Alternatively ABB including a science plus B in a psychology- or biology-based EPQ, or plus A in Core Maths. GCSE Maths at 5/B (or equivalent) is also required.
  • IB: 34 with 5 in a Higher Level science, or 33 with 5 in a Higher Level science and B in a psychology- or biology-based Extended Essay.
  • Gaokao: Sheffield accepts the Gaokao for direct entry. For courses requiring AAB to ABB at A Level, you need at least 70% of the total marks; where a subject is required, an A equals 75% of that subject’s marks and a B equals 70% (typically maths or a science).
  • Senior High School Certificate only: students with only the three-year Chinese Senior High School Certificate must first complete a recognised foundation programme. Options include the International Year One in Psychology or International Foundation Year at the University of Sheffield International College, or an NCUK International Foundation Year.
  • University study in China: students who have completed year one of a four-year Chinese bachelor’s degree are considered for year one; holders of a three-year university diploma (dazhuan) are considered for year two (a general statement for all courses; confirm with the school for psychology).

3. Academic requirements: Canadian high schools

  • British Columbia: Sheffield’s equivalence table lists an 80% average in five Grade 12 subjects on the BC Dogwood Diploma for AAB. Sheffield says Canadian high school graduates with 75% to 85% in five Grade 12 subjects are considered for direct first-year entry, varying slightly by province.
  • Ontario: an 80% average in six Grade 12 U or M courses.
  • Other: IB Diploma holders can apply directly (see the IB requirement above). Because a science subject is required, Canadian students should take a relevant Grade 12 science.

4. English requirements

  • IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, or an equivalent qualification such as GCSE English Language at 4/C.
  • Students below the requirement can take courses at the English Language Teaching Centre or progress through the International College.

5. Transfer students

  • For Canadian students, Sheffield says those transferring from a regular four-year bachelor’s program are considered for entry to year one or two, with a high current GPA and strong grades in relevant subjects.
  • Second-year entry into psychology depends on how earlier courses map onto the BPS-accredited curriculum; the course page gives no specific transfer criteria, so contact the School of Psychology.

6. Fees and scholarships

  • International fees: new full-time overseas undergraduates in 2027/28 pay between £27,650 and £34,670 (except Medicine and Dentistry); check the course page for psychology’s exact fee. Home students starting in 2027 pay £10,050.
  • International Undergraduate Scholarship: the current published version is for September 2026 entry: £2,500 a year, up to £10,000 for four-year programmes, applied automatically as a fee discount if you make Sheffield your firm or insurance choice by the deadline, and renewed each year with an average of 60% or above. The 2027 version has not yet been published.

7. Timeline for September 2027 entry

  • Autumn 2026: apply through UCAS (course code C800) with your personal statement and reference.
  • January 2027: the UCAS equal consideration deadline. The University of Birmingham states the deadline for September 2027 entry as 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time; confirm on UCAS. International students should apply early to allow time for visas.
  • After offers: choose your firm and insurance offers on UCAS, noting the scholarship deadline, and meet any conditions, including English.
