How to Apply to Business at the University of Calgary: Direct Entry to a Haskayne BComm Concentration, and Requirements and Timeline for BC and Chinese High School Students and Transfer Students
The University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business admits high school students directly to its Bachelor of Commerce, choosing one of 11 concentrations such as accounting, finance or marketing on the application, with changes allowed each year from October to February. BC students need English 12 and Pre-Calculus 12 with an estimated competitive average in the high 80s, and Chinese students do not need the Gaokao. Based on UCalgary’s official information, this guide covers deadlines, English, scholarships, co-op, and the six required courses and 3.0–3.3 competitive GPA for transfer students.
The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is in Calgary, Alberta. Business is taught by the Haskayne School of Business, which offers a four-year Bachelor of Commerce (BComm). High school students can apply directly to the BComm, choosing a concentration on the application. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on UCalgary’s official information, for students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), students at high schools in China, and transfer students.
1. Program and concentrations
- 11 concentrations: Accounting, Business, Business Analytics, Business Technology Management, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Finance, International Business Strategy, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources, Operations and Supply Chain Management, and Risk Management.
- Choosing one: each concentration has its own program page, and you apply to one. Concentration courses (at least six) are usually taken in Years 3 and 4, and only one concentration is allowed. After admission you can request a change through the Student Centre from 1 October to 1 February, effective the following year, with no limit on changes, though late changes may delay graduation.
- Other opportunities: co-op (alternating study with full-time paid work), exchanges with 30+ partners, a BComm Honours program, and mentorship.
- Outcomes: Haskayne cites its 2022 graduate questionnaire (three months after graduation): 82.6% of BComm students had a job by graduation, with an average salary of CAD 65,110.
2. Academic requirements: Canadian high school students
- BC students:
- English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12;
- Pre-Calculus 12;
- two approved courses, excluding equivalents of Physical Education, Fine Arts and non-calculus math;
- one more approved course or option; approved options include Accounting 12, Economics 12, Entrepreneurship 12, Statistics 12 and Psychology 12.
- Estimated competitive admission average: high 80s.
- Two rounds: early admission uses four program-specific courses and standard admission uses five. After an offer, you must complete all Grade 12 requirements, maintain your average and graduate.
- How to apply: students in Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Yukon apply through ApplyAlberta; BC students need their Personal Education Number. The fee is CAD 125 with only Canadian credentials and CAD 145 with international credentials.
- Two choices: your second choice is considered if you are not admissible to your first, and you remain under consideration for your first choice after a second-choice offer.
3. Academic requirements: students at high schools in China
- Documents: your senior middle school transcript; the Gaokao is not required.
- Required subjects: English, Mathematics, two approved courses (excluding Arts/Visual Studies, Dance and Music) and one more approved course or option. 12th-year math can count as two distinct subjects (Mathematics and Calculus). Approved courses include economics, physics, chemistry, history and geography; accounting, business studies, computer studies and psychology count as options.
- Average: UCalgary gives no number for Chinese students, saying only that averages are competitive and meeting requirements does not guarantee admission.
- Dates: students who need a study permit apply 15 August 2026 to 1 April 2027.
4. English requirements
- IELTS Academic 6.5; TOEFL 4.5 on the new scale for tests after 21 January 2026, or 86 for earlier tests; Duolingo 120. Applications are reviewed only after the requirement is met.
- Three years at an accredited English-medium high school, among other routes, can waive the test.
- The Academic Communication Certificate (ACC) bridging program can lead to conditional admission.
5. Timeline (fall 2027)
- 15 August 2026: study-permit applicants can apply.
- 1 October 2026: Canadian citizens and permanent residents can apply; entrance awards open.
- 1 December 2026: deadline for high school Prestige Awards, including the International Entrance Scholarship.
- 1 March 2027: application deadline for Canadian and transfer applicants.

- President’s Admission Scholarship: CAD 5,000, automatic for students entering from high school with a final admission average of 95%+, regardless of citizenship.
- International Entrance Scholarship: CAD 20,000, renewable, for new students paying international tuition, based on academics and extracurricular achievement; apply through the Prestige Awards by 1 December.
7. Transfer students
- Who transfers: applicants with 12+ units of post-secondary academic coursework; the competitive GPA uses the most recent coursework up to 30 units, excluding high school grades.
- Estimated competitive GPA: 3.0–3.3 on a 4-point scale. If your GPA falls below the waitlist GPA, the application is cancelled and grades after winter are not reviewed.
