How to Apply to Business at Simon Fraser University: Direct Entry to the Beedie BBA With a Supplemental Application, and Requirements and Timeline for BC and Chinese High School Students and Transfer Students
Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business admits high school students directly to its Bachelor of Business Administration, but you must list Beedie as your first choice and submit a Supplemental Application (a short essay, activities and two references, with a separate CAD 95.12 fee). High school applicants need grades in the 80s, BC students must take Pre-Calculus 12, and Chinese students must submit Gaokao results. Based on SFU’s official information, this guide covers September 2027 deadlines, admission ranges, English requirements, tuition, co-op and transfer rules.
At Simon Fraser University (SFU), in Metro Vancouver, business is taught by the Beedie School of Business, which awards the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). High school students can apply directly to Beedie, but admission depends on a Supplemental Application as well as grades. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on SFU’s official information, for students at Canadian high schools (especially BC and Vancouver), students at high schools in China, and transfer students.
1. Program and concentrations
- Nine concentrations: Accounting, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Operations Management and Strategic Analysis. All except Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Strategic Analysis are Burnaby-only.
- Chosen after admission: you cannot choose a concentration or a joint major when you apply; Beedie encourages students to declare by third year.
- Campus: in EducationPlannerBC, choose “Business” (Burnaby) or “Business – 1st yr Surrey”. The campus only determines where you take BUS 201 in your first term; Beedie says admission odds are the same either way.
- Co-op and exchange: the trimester system lets you do paid co-op or an exchange in any term. Beedie describes its co-op program as one of the largest in Western Canada, and eCoop lets you work full-time on your own start-up.
2. How high school students apply
- Beedie must be your first choice: only applicants who list Beedie first are evaluated by the school. Your second choice must be a non-Beedie program, which is considered if Beedie declines you.
- Supplemental Application (required): available 24 hours after you apply to SFU, using your 9-digit student number. It includes:
- a short-answer essay;
- your activities and achievements over the last four years;
- two references, one of whom must be a high school teacher or counsellor;
- any additional information;
- a CAD 95.12 fee, separate from the SFU application fee (CAD 130 for international and CAD 84.25 for domestic applicants).
- USES instead: fall applicants with a complete, eligible Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship application do not need the Beedie Supplemental Application; submitting both does not improve your chances.
- Deadlines (September 2027): apply 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027; the Supplemental Application and documents are due 7 February 2027. January 2027 entry is also possible (apply 1 July to 15 September; supplemental due 1 October).
- Appeals: within 21 days of your decision.
3. Academic requirements: Canadian high school students
- BC students:
- high school graduation with at least five approved academic Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 (or English First Peoples 12), Pre-Calculus 12 and three more approved Grade 12 courses;
- at least 70% in Language Arts 11 or English 12;
- Grade 11 and 12 marks in the 80s or higher;
- Calculus 12 cannot replace Pre-Calculus 12.
- Admission range: SFU’s three-year historical range for Beedie is “all high school students: minimum grades in the 80s and supplemental application”, with no separate domestic and international figures.
- Two rounds: early admission uses Grade 11 and available Grade 12 marks (usually November to January); standard admission uses all Grade 11 and 12 courses (usually February to April). SFU receives marks through the BC Student Transcript Service and re-reviews files as new grades arrive.
- Other provinces, IB and AP: SFU’s curriculum-specific requirements apply, and equivalent AP or IB courses can replace required courses.
4. Academic requirements: students at high schools in China
- Credentials: the senior middle school graduation diploma and a transcript with all courses and final first-semester Senior Year 3 grades; your average is calculated on Senior Year 3 academic subjects.
- Math: Beedie requires Senior Year 3 Math; SFU’s quantitative requirement is at least 70% in Senior Year 2 or 3 math (on a 60% pass scale).
- Gaokao: required; offers are conditional on receiving Gaokao results in July. IB and A-Level students do not need it.
- Supplemental Application still required: Beedie admits all high school applicants on grades plus the supplemental.
- Pathway: Fraser International College (FIC) offers a pathway into SFU.
5. English requirements
- IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0;
- TOEFL iBT 4.5 on the new scale (no section below 4.0), or 88 (no section below 20) for tests before 21 January 2026; single sitting only;
- Duolingo 125; PTE Academic 65; CAEL 70.
- Students who completed their last three years of high school full-time in Canada or an English-speaking country, with at least 70% in senior English, are exempt.
6. Tuition and scholarships
- Per-unit fees: SFU’s Spring 2027 calendar lists, for international students who entered in 2024/25 or later, CAD 1,262.88 per unit for regular courses and CAD 1,492.13 per unit for Beedie 200-, 300- and 400-division courses. Domestic rates are CAD 220.61 and 294.15.
- First-year estimate: SFU’s typical estimate for 30 units in Arts or Science is about CAD 38,944 in international tuition and fees; upper-level Beedie courses are charged at the higher rate above.
- USES: open to domestic and international students with an admission average of at least 90% (or IB 31); up to CAD 140,000 for international students; deadline 15 December 2026.
7. Transfer students
- From another college or university (24+ transferable units, no SFU coursework):
- a cumulative GPA of at least 2.67 (B-) plus the Supplemental Application, which for transfers includes two video responses;
- 24 units completed or in progress and four required courses with C- or better: Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, Calculus I for the Social Sciences, and a 3-unit English course (or a listed philosophy or writing course);
- up to 60 units of transfer credit; BC students should check the BC Transfer Guide, and others may need detailed course outlines;
- September 2027: apply 1 March to 15 April; supplemental and documents due 15 May.
- Fewer than 24 units: apply through the high school route.
- Internal transfer at SFU: at least 24 units (12 at SFU), an SFU CGPA of at least 2.67, and the Supplemental Application. With 24 to 47 units you need the four courses above; with 48 or more you also need business statistics, business technology management, financial accounting and organizational behaviour. For September, apply 1 March to 15 May. More than three course repeats reduce your chances.
