How to Apply to Business at the University of Manitoba: Direct Entry or Advanced Entry to the Asper BComm (Honours), and Requirements and Timeline for Canadian and Chinese High School Students and Transfer Students
The University of Manitoba’s Asper School of Business offers two routes into its Bachelor of Commerce (Honours): direct entry from high school, or advanced entry after 24 credit hours elsewhere. Direct entry requires an 85% average (80% equivalent for Chinese students) over English, Pre-Calculus and two other Grade 12 courses, with at least 70% in each, by 1 March. Based on UM’s official information, this guide covers the 11 majors, the three-term co-op, English requirements, tuition, scholarships and the two transfer tracks.
The University of Manitoba (UM) is in Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital. Business is taught by the I. H. Asper School of Business, which offers a four-year, 120-credit-hour Bachelor of Commerce (Honours). You can enter directly from high school, or apply after a year in another UM faculty or elsewhere. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on UM’s official information, for students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), students at high schools in China, and transfer students.
1. Program and majors
- 11 majors: Accounting, Actuarial Mathematics (Business), Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship/Innovation, Finance, Generalist, Human Resources Management/Industrial Relations, Indigenous Business Studies, Marketing, Strategy and Global Management, and Supply Chain Management and Logistics.
- Declared after admission: Asper students may declare one or two majors using the school’s declaration form; students admitted from fall 2024 can also add a minor from another UM faculty.
- Structure: Track 1/Foundation courses, a common core, major courses, business electives and non-business electives, with a degree GPA of at least 2.00 to graduate.
- Co-op: the BComm co-op includes three paid four-month work terms alternating with study terms, usually adding at least a term to the degree. IDM 1010 (C+ or better) is a prerequisite, and students need 45–81 credit hours when starting their first work term. Asper says 90% of co-op students find full-time jobs right after graduation.
- Exchange: 60+ partner business schools, with credit toward your degree.
- Deferral: UM says Asper is the only program with an approved deferral process; students who accept by 1 July can request a deferral in writing.
2. Direct entry: Canadian high school students
- Who is direct entry: current or former high school students with fewer than 24 post-secondary credit hours.
- BC students: English 12, Pre-Calculus Mathematics 12 and two Grade 12 university-preparatory academic courses, with an average of at least 85% and at least 70% in each.
- Manitoba: English 40S, Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S and two other 40S courses, also 85% average and 70% each; Alberta uses ELA 30-1 and Math 30-1.
- UM notes these are minimums and higher averages may be needed in the annual competition.
- Pre-Calculus floor: all BComm students need at least 60% in Grade 12 Pre-Calculus to complete degree requirements.
3. Direct entry: students at high schools in China
- Credentials: high school graduation with five senior-level credits; UM does not mention the Gaokao for Chinese applicants.
- Commerce: English, Pre-Calculus Mathematics and two more academic courses with an equivalent average of at least 80% and at least 70% in each.
- Documents: non-English transcripts need English translations from the school or a certified translator.
4. English requirements
- IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0 (One Skill Retake accepted);
- TOEFL iBT 4.5 on the new scale (no section below 4.0), or 86 (no section below 20) for tests before 21 January 2026;
- Duolingo 120; scores are valid for two years and must still be valid when classes start.
- Three consecutive years of Canadian high school or post-secondary study, among other routes, can waive the test.
5. Dates (September 2027)
- Direct entry: opens early September; deadline 1 March.
- Advanced entry (transfer): opens early November; deadline 15 March; the 24 credit hours must be completed by 30 April.
- January entry: advanced entry only, space permitting, and only for students living in Canada.
- Application fee: CAD 100 domestic, CAD 130 international.
6. Tuition and scholarships
- Estimated tuition (full-time fall and winter, with associated fees): Business is about CAD 8,100 for Canadian students and CAD 26,700 for international students.
- General Entrance Scholarship: international students graduating from high schools abroad who apply by 1 March are considered automatically, by average. For 2024–25, for example: 95%+ CAD 3,000, 90%+ CAD 2,000, 85%+ CAD 1,000.
- International Excellence Entrance Scholarship: based on community involvement and leadership; CAD 25,000 for first place and CAD 10,000 each for second and third.
7. Transfer students: advanced entry
- Who: applicants with 24+ credit hours in another UM faculty or a recognized institution. High school students not admitted directly can spend a year elsewhere, complete the requirements and apply.
- Track 1: 24 credit hours of specified courses by 30 April, each with C or better:
- Introduction to Microeconomic and Macroeconomic Principles;
- Mathematics for Management and Social Sciences (MATH 1524, preferred) or listed calculus courses;
- Basic Statistical Analysis (STAT 1000 or 1150);
- a 3-credit-hour written English (“W”) course;
- GMGT 1010 Business and Society;
- 6 credit hours of non-business electives (or 3 plus a listed math course).
- Track 2: applicants missing one or more Track 1 courses can apply with 24 credit hours, an AGPA of at least 3.1 and C or better in each course, then complete the missing courses in their first year.
- Transfer credit: only courses from the last 10 years count; second-degree students receive at most 60 credit hours. Credits beyond the 24 may transfer if applicable to the BComm.
- Manitoba college pathways: Business Administration diploma graduates from Red River College Polytechnic, Assiniboine College and others can apply under articulation agreements (for example, RRC Polytechnic requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00, with up to 54 credit hours transferred). These cover Manitoba institutions; UM lists no BC college agreement, so BC college students apply through regular advanced entry.
