How to Apply to Business at Memorial University of Newfoundland: Direct Entry to the B.Comm., Then Apply to Co-op After First Year, and Requirements and Timeline for Canadian High School, Chinese High School and Transfer Students
Memorial University of Newfoundland offers a four-year Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.) and a five-year B.Comm. (Co-operative). High school students can enter the B.Comm. directly and take the common Year One Commerce courses; the Co-op program is a competitive application after that year with at least a 65% average. BC students need a 70% minimum average and Chinese students 75%. Based on Memorial’s official information for September 2027 entry, this guide covers English scores, the March 1 recommended deadline, per-course international tuition and automatic entrance scholarships.
Memorial University of Newfoundland, in St. John’s, offers business through the Faculty of Business Administration, with two main undergraduate degrees:
- Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.): four years, 40 courses (120 credit hours), full- or part-time, on campus, online or both;
- Bachelor of Commerce (Co-operative): five years, 45 courses (135 credit hours), St. John’s campus only, full-time and structured, with three mandatory paid work terms.
Memorial also offers a joint Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Commerce and a joint B.Comm. (Co-op) and Bachelor of Arts. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Memorial’s official information, for students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), students at high schools in China, and transfer students.
1. Getting into business: direct entry and a common first year
- High school students can apply directly to the B.Comm. by choosing the Faculty of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce on the application; direct entry depends on meeting Memorial’s general admission requirements.
- Year One Commerce: a suggested common first year of 10 courses: math (MATH 1090, 1000 or 1005, depending on your background), micro and macroeconomics, two English courses (one can be a critical reading and writing course), BUSI 1000, one of BUSI 2111, 2205 or 2600, and three non-business electives.
- Focus areas: Memorial says these are informal, not noted on your transcript and optional; you can focus on areas such as accounting or entrepreneurship.
- Professional development: both degrees require non-credit professional development seminars.
2. Bachelor of Commerce (Co-operative)
- Apply after first year: complete the 10 Year One Commerce courses (30 credit hours) with an average of at least 65%, have at least 60% on your most recent 30 credit hours, and complete at least one semester of 15 credit hours or more. Admission is competitive and limited.
- How and when: apply as a “Current Memorial student” and choose Bachelor of Commerce (Co-operative). Deadlines are 15 May for fall (Academic Terms 1 and 3) and 1 November for winter (Academic Term 2); late applications are considered as space permits.
- Structure: academic and work terms alternate, with seven academic terms and three work terms. Memorial says the program has a 100% placement rate and was the first business degree in Canada accredited by CEWIL.
- Memorial does not state work-permit requirements for international students; check with the Faculty’s Academic Programs Office.
3. Academic requirements: students at Canadian high schools
- British Columbia: Grade 12 completion with a Grade 12 course in each of five subject areas:
- English: English First Peoples 12 or English Studies 12;
- Math: Foundations of Mathematics 12, Pre-Calculus 12 or Calculus 12;
- Laboratory science: Anatomy and Physiology 12, Chemistry 12, Geology 12 or Physics 12;
- Social studies or a modern or classical language (for example Economics Theory 12 or Law Studies 12);
- one elective.
- Minimum average of 70% across those five Grade 12 courses, with a pass in each. The B.Comm. is a general-admission program, and Memorial does not set a higher business cut-off.
- Supplementary materials: none required for the B.Comm.
4. Academic requirements: students at high schools in China
- Credential: Senior Secondary School Certificate.
- Subjects: English, mathematics, a laboratory science (biology, chemistry or physics), social studies or a modern/classical language, and an elective.
- Minimum average of 75 in those subjects at the senior level, with a pass in each. Memorial states no Gaokao requirement.
- Documents: current students submit an interim transcript with a certified translation for early acceptance, then the certificate and translation after graduating. Memorial may ask for CDGDC or CHESICC verification. An English test score is required.
5. English requirements
- IELTS Academic 6.5, with at least 6 in reading and writing;
- TOEFL iBT 4.5, with 4.0 in reading and writing (Home Edition accepted); valid tests up to January 2026: 83 overall with 20 in reading and writing;
- Duolingo 115; PTE Academic 60; CAEL 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 176; Michigan English Test 59;
- tests must be within two years of applying. Applicants below these scores may get early acceptance through Memorial’s intensive English programs at Grenfell Campus.
6. Timeline (September 2027 entry)
- 10 September 2026: fall applications open.
- 1 March 2027: recommended B.Comm. deadline (rolling admission); high school students must also apply by this date to be considered for early entrance scholarships.
- 20 August 2027: general document deadline; applications close on the first day of the semester.
- Memorial advises international applicants to apply at least 12 weeks before the semester to allow for a study permit.
- B.Comm. (Co-op): after first year, apply by 15 May to enter that fall.
7. Tuition and scholarships
- Per-course tuition: for international students starting in fall 2026, $2,250 per 3-credit-hour course (under the tuition freeze); Canadian students pay $675. At 10 courses a year, international tuition comes to about $22,500 (our calculation from Memorial’s per-course rate). Fall 2027 rates are not yet published.
- International entrance scholarships: eligible admitted students are considered automatically, with no separate application but no guarantee; awards are for first year only and non-renewable. International transfers are considered only if fewer than 31 credit hours transfer.
8. Transfer students
- Applying to the B.Comm.: transfer applicants choose the Faculty of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce on the application, or ask the Office of the Registrar to add it later. Current Memorial students declare by emailing the Registrar.
- General requirements: good standing and eligibility to continue at your most recent institution, plus the English requirement. Documents not in English or French need certified translations. Transfer credit is evaluated after admission; Memorial advises applying and sending documents early.
- B.Comm. (Co-op): current and transfer students can apply for advanced standing into Academic Terms 1, 2 or 3; this is competitive and limited, and transfer applicants normally complete at least five courses (15 credit hours) at Memorial first.
