How to Apply to Computer Science at the University of Bath: A*A*A With A in Maths, IB 36 and Gaokao 80%, With an Optional Placement or Year Abroad, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-18 · Application guides

Bath offers Computer Science as a three-year BSc (UCAS H100), a four-year MComp (H102) and versions with a professional placement or study abroad year (such as H101). The typical offer is A*A*A including A in Mathematics, or IB 36 with 7, 7, 6 at Higher Level including 6 in HL Mathematics. Bath lists a Gaokao requirement of 80% overall with 80% in Mathematics; Canadian high school diplomas alone are not accepted for this course without an additional maths qualification such as AP Calculus BC or an IB HL Mathematics certificate. English is Category C (IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component). Bath considers grades, subjects and the personal statement, and most offers are made in February and March. The UCAS deadline is 13 January 2027. Based on Bath’s official information, this guide covers courses, entry, English, fees and a checklist.

Computer Science at the University of Bath is taught by the Department of Computer Science on the Claverton Down campus. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Bath’s official information, for students at high schools in China (including A-level/IB students at international schools), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.

1. The courses

  • BSc (Hons) Computer Science (H100): three years, starting September 2027 (Welcome Week from 20 September 2027) and ending in 2030. Bath calls it its broadest computer science course.
  • With professional placement or study abroad (H101): four years, with a year in industry, a research institution or abroad.
  • MComp Computer Science (H102): an integrated four-year master’s with the same entry requirements; a five-year placement or study-abroad version also exists.
  • Related courses: Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Science and Mathematics, each as a BSc or MComp.
  • Content: software systems design, software development, interaction design, artificial intelligence, computational mathematics, and computer graphics and vision. Year 1 covers mathematics and programming basics; in Year 2 you build an interactive application in a group project; later years let you specialise through options and an individual project. A skills development programme runs in Years 1 and 2.
  • Accreditation: initially accredited by BCS (meeting CITP and partially meeting CEng); as a new course, full accreditation is confirmed once the first cohort graduates.

2. Entry requirements: A-level and IB

  • A-level: typical offer A*A*A including A in Mathematics. Contextual offer AAA or A*AB including A in Mathematics.
  • Alternative offers: applicants not eligible for a contextual offer who study beyond three A-levels can receive A*AA or A*A*B (with A in Maths) plus either an A in AS Further Mathematics (if not taking the A-level) or a B in a fourth A-level (where the four include A-level Further Mathematics).
  • IB: 36 points with 7, 7, 6 at Higher Level, including 6 in either HL Mathematics. SL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches may be considered with 36 points, HL 7, 6, 6 or 7, 7, 5, and 7 in SL AA; SL Applications and Interpretation is not accepted.
  • GCSE: English Language or Literature at C/4; your wider GCSE profile is a significant selection factor.
  • Selection: Bath says Computer Science is highly selective and meeting the typical offer does not guarantee one. It considers previous achievement such as GCSEs, predicted or achieved grades, subjects studied and the personal statement, using only the UCAS personal statement, which should be relevant to Computer Science if you apply to several subjects. Interviews are not normally used.
  • When you may hear: a small number of offers go out from October to January, and most in February and March.

3. Students at high schools in China

  • Gaokao: the Chinese qualifications section lists 80% overall including 80% in Mathematics for Science.
  • AST: the same section lists AST scores of 230, 210 and 210 in three subjects, including 210 in Mathematics. Bath does not say whether the AST is required alongside the Gaokao or accepted on its own, so ask before applying.
  • International school students: apply with A-levels or the IB as above.
  • AP: students on a US curriculum need 5, 5, 5 in three AP tests including Calculus BC; Calculus AB, AP Seminar and AP Research do not count.
  • International Foundation Year: Bath’s International Study Centre on campus offers a foundation year with guaranteed progression if you reach the required grades.

4. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)

  • Diplomas alone are not accepted: apart from certain Quebec programmes, Bath cannot accept Canadian provincial high school diplomas on their own for this course; you need an additional mathematics qualification such as the AP Calculus BC test or an IB HL Mathematics certificate.
  • Quebec DEC: an 88% average in a pre-university programme with 88% in all mathematics courses.
  • BC students can use the AP route: 5s in three AP tests including Calculus BC. Email admissions@bath.ac.uk to confirm your combination.

5. Transfer students

  • The course pages do not describe a second-year entry route, and Bath publishes no rules for it. Students with university study should contact admissions@bath.ac.uk. For US Associate Degrees, Bath considers a 3.5 GPA with sufficient mathematics credit case by case.

6. English requirements (Category C)

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in all components.
  • TOEFL iBT: for tests after 21 January 2026, 4.5 overall with at least 4.0 in each component; earlier tests 90 overall with 21 in each.
  • PTE Academic: 62 with no element below 59 (PTE Academic Online not accepted); Duolingo: 120 overall with Speaking, Writing and Reading 110 and Listening 105.
  • Applicants meeting the GCSE English requirement do not need a test.

7. Fees and scholarships

  • Fees: 2027 entry fees are not yet published. For 2026 entry the BSc costs £9,790 for Home students and £32,000 for Overseas students; fees may rise annually.
  • Scholarships: for 2026 entry Bath offered up to 300 Bath International Excellence Scholarships worth £8,000 a year (£24,000 over three years); check Bath for 2027.

8. UCAS application and timeline

  • Codes: institution B16; BSc H100, placement or study abroad H101, MComp H102.
  • 13 January 2027: deadline for both Home and Overseas applicants.
  • Personal statement: from 2026 entry, three questions with 4,000 characters in total.
