How to Apply to Computer Science at the University of Leeds: The Three-Year BSc and Four-Year MEng Both Ask for A-Level AAA Including Maths, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
At the University of Leeds, the School of Computer Science offers the three-year Computer Science BSc (UCAS G400), the four-year MEng (G402) and a version with an industrial placement year (G406). Entry requires A-Level AAA including Maths, or 18 points at IB Higher Level with 5 in HL Maths: Analysis and Approaches or 6 in HL Applications and Interpretation; the Gaokao is accepted at 75% to 85% depending on the programme. English requires IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each component. International fees for 2027 entry are £33,700 a year, fixed for the whole degree. Based on Leeds’s official information, this guide covers entry, English, transfer, fees and a checklist.
At the University of Leeds in northern England, computer science is taught by the School of Computer Science. In the UK you apply directly to a course through UCAS. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Leeds’s official information, for students at high schools in China (Gaokao and international-school A-Level and IB students), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.
1. The courses
- Computer Science BSc (UCAS code G400): three years, starting September 2027. Years 1 and 2 cover programming, computer systems, algorithms, mathematics and software engineering; the final year includes a major individual project and specialist topics such as cryptography and secure systems, algorithms and complexity, and compiler design.
- Computer Science MEng, BSc (UCAS code G402): a four-year integrated master’s with the same entry requirements.
- Computer Science (Industrial) BSc (UCAS code G406): four years, including a year in industry. Other courses offer an optional placement year or year abroad, and students can apply for paid summer research internships.
- Related courses: Leeds also lists Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence BSc, Computer Science with High-Performance Graphics and Games Engineering, Data Science and others, each with its own requirements.
- Accreditation: the course page says the school’s courses have consistently been accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT; as the curriculum is being reviewed, Leeds is seeking reaccreditation for full CITP and partial CEng.
2. Academic requirements: students at high schools in China
- A-Level: AAA including Mathematics; where a science A-Level is taken, the practical element must be passed. GCSE English Language grade 4 (C) or an equivalent English qualification is also required. With an A in the EPQ, Leeds may make an offer of AAB including an A in Mathematics.
- IB: 18 points at Higher Level, including 5 in HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or 6 in HL Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation. The course page gives no total points requirement.
- Gaokao: Leeds accepts the Gaokao. Its China page gives typical requirements of 75% to 85% in the Gaokao depending on the programme, plus an 80% average (80% in relevant subjects) in senior high Years 1 and 2 and the graduation certificate, and notes that some programmes also require A-Level Maths alongside the Gaokao. Leeds does not publish the figure for Computer Science or say whether A-Level Maths is needed; ask ugcomp@leeds.ac.uk.
- Maple Leaf schools (MLWSP): the Maple Leaf World School Program Diploma is accepted at 75% to 85% depending on the programme.
- Foundation: international students who do not meet the requirements may take the University of Leeds International Foundation Year and then progress.
- AP: neither the course page nor the China page lists AP requirements; ask admissions directly.
3. Academic requirements: students at Canadian high schools
- Leeds’s Canada page accepts high school diplomas from all provinces except Quebec (which requires the DEC), taught in person over three years, with 5 Grade 12 subjects (6 in Ontario).
- For courses asking for AAA, you need an 80% overall average with subject-specific grades; subject grades convert as A* = 85%, A = 80% and B = 75%. Computer Science needs an A in Maths, so Grade 12 Maths should generally be at least 80%.
- The Ontario OSSD is only accepted from listed schools; schools outside Canada that are not listed will not be considered.
4. English requirements
- The Computer Science course page asks for IELTS 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each section, or an equivalent.
- Canadian students: Leeds’s Canada page accepts 65% in English 12 from the high school diploma (including BC’s English 12 First Peoples and Communications 12) as the undergraduate minimum, equivalent to IELTS 6.0.
- Chinese students: Maple Leaf English 12 at 65% is also accepted; other students generally need a test such as IELTS. Leeds offers an undergraduate pre-sessional English course for those who fall short.
5. Transfer students
- The Computer Science pages do not describe second-year entry or credit transfer; contact the School at ugcomp@leeds.ac.uk before applying.
6. Fees and scholarships
- Tuition: £33,700 a year for international students starting in 2027, fixed for the whole course; UK students pay £10,050 in 2027/28. Fees are reduced in a placement or study abroad year.
- Scholarships: see Leeds’s international scholarships directory for current awards and conditions.
7. Timeline (September 2027 entry)
- Apply through UCAS; international students apply the same way as UK students. The UCAS equal consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 (check UCAS), and the course page says later applications may be considered.
- For applications submitted by the January deadline, UCAS asks universities to decide by mid-May. Leeds recommends that international students apply early to leave time for the visa.
