How to Apply to Computer Science at the University of Sheffield: The Three-Year BSc and Four-Year MComp Ask for A-Level AAA Including Maths and Accept the Gaokao, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
At the University of Sheffield, the School of Computer Science offers the three-year Computer Science BSc (UCAS G402) and the four-year MComp (G400), both accredited by BCS, with an optional placement year or year abroad. The standard offer is A-Level AAA including Maths, or AAB with an A in Maths and a B in Computer Science; the IB requirement is 36 with 6 in HL Maths. The Gaokao is accepted for direct entry, with AAA equal to 75% of total marks, and BC students need an 85% average in five Grade 12 subjects. English requires IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component. Based on Sheffield’s official information, this guide covers entry, English, transfer, fees and a checklist.
The University of Sheffield is in the north of England, and computer science is taught by the School of Computer Science. In the UK you apply directly to a course through UCAS. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Sheffield’s official information, for students at high schools in China (Gaokao, A-Level and IB), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.
1. The courses
- Computer Science BSc (UCAS code G402): three years, starting in September. Core modules in years 1 and 2 cover the foundations of computer science; final-year options include software reengineering, deep learning, natural language processing and cryptography.
- Computer Science MComp (UCAS code G400): a four-year integrated master’s with the same entry requirements.
- Accreditation: the course page says the BSc is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), fully meeting the requirements for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) and partially meeting those for Chartered Engineer (CEng).
- Placement and study abroad: you can add a placement year, turning the three-year course into a four-year Degree with Placement Year, or apply for a year abroad, usually between years 2 and 3, with 250+ partner universities. For 2027 entrants, the placement year fee is 20% of the full-time fee and the year abroad 15%.
- Flexibility: the course page says it is possible to transfer between the school’s computer science courses.
2. Academic requirements: students at high schools in China
- A-Level: the standard offer is AAA including Maths, or AAB with an A in Maths and a B in Computer Science. With a fourth Level 3 qualification, AAB (A in Maths) plus an A in a relevant EPQ, or an A in AS or A-Level Further Maths, is also listed.
- IB: 36 with 6 in HL Maths; or 34 with 6 in HL Maths and 5 in HL Computer Science; or 34 with 6 in HL Maths and an A in a computer science Extended Essay.
- Gaokao: Sheffield accepts the Gaokao for direct entry. Courses asking for AAA or above require at least 75% of total marks. Where there are subject requirements (typically Maths and/or a science), an A equals 75% of the marks in that Gaokao subject and a B equals 70%. Computer Science needs an A in Maths, so Gaokao Maths should generally be at least 75%.
- Senior high school certificate only: the three-year certificate alone does not give first-year entry; a recognised foundation is needed. The course page points to the International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield International College, and the China page also lists NCUK’s International Foundation Year.
- AP: neither the course page nor the China page lists AP requirements; confirm with the school.
3. Academic requirements: students at Canadian high schools
- BC: Sheffield’s table maps AAA to an 85% average in five Grade 12 subjects on the Dogwood Diploma, and AAB to 80%.
- Ontario: AAA maps to an 85% average in six Grade 12 U or M courses.
- Maths: the Canada table only gives overall averages and does not say what Grade 12 Maths mark meets the “A in Maths” requirement; confirm with the school.
4. English requirements
- The course page asks for GCSE English Language at 4/C, IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component, or another acceptable English qualification.
- The Canada page does not say whether Canadian high school English can replace IELTS; check Sheffield’s equivalent English qualifications page or ask the school.
- International students who do not meet the requirements can take the International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield International College.
5. Transfer students
- China: the China page says students who complete the first year of a four-year Chinese bachelor’s degree are considered for first-year entry, and holders of a three-year university diploma (dazhuan) for direct second-year entry (a general university statement).
- Canada: the Canada page says students on a four-year bachelor’s programme in Canada are considered for first- or second-year entry, with a high current GPA and high grades in relevant subjects.
- The Computer Science page gives no specific advanced-entry terms; contact the school before applying.
6. Fees and scholarships
- International tuition: new full-time overseas undergraduates in 2027/28 pay between £27,650 and £34,670 (excluding Medicine and Dentistry). The course page does not list the Computer Science figure; use Sheffield’s fee lookup.
- International Undergraduate Scholarship: the course page currently shows the September 2026 version: £2,500 a year, up to £10,000, awarded automatically to overseas fee-paying students. The 2027 version has not yet been published.
7. Timeline (September 2027 entry)
- Apply through UCAS using the course code (BSc G402, MComp G400), with a personal statement and reference.
- The UCAS equal consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 (check UCAS). International students should apply early to leave time for the visa.
