How to Apply to Computer Science at the University of York (UK): The Three-Year BSc Asks for A-Level AAA Including Maths and the Four-Year MEng for A*AA, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-18 · Application guides

At the University of York, the Department of Computer Science offers the three-year Computer Science BSc (UCAS G400), which asks for A-Level AAA including Maths or IB 36, and the four-year MEng (I102), which asks for A*AA or IB 37. Both are BCS-accredited and can include a year in industry. English requires IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component; Canadian nationals do not need to provide English evidence. International tuition for 2027 entry is £33,500 a year, and students from China and Canada automatically receive a £5,000-a-year scholarship. The UCAS deadline is 13 January 2027. Based on York’s official information, this guide covers entry, English, transfer, fees and a checklist.

The University of York is in the north of England, and computer science is taught by the Department of Computer Science. In the UK you apply directly to a course through UCAS; York’s institution code is Y50. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on York’s official information, for students at high schools in China (Gaokao, A-Level and IB), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.

1. The courses

  • Computer Science BSc (UCAS code G400): three years, starting September 2027. York says its core topics follow the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) curriculum guidelines; Year 1 builds foundations (programming, mathematical foundations of computer science) regardless of previous programming experience, and Year 2 includes a group engineering project and the start of specialisation.
  • Computer Science MEng (UCAS code I102): a four-year integrated master’s with higher entry requirements.
  • Year in industry: both the BSc and MEng have “with a year in industry” versions, supported by a dedicated placements team. Fees are reduced in a placement or study abroad year.
  • Accreditation: the BSc is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, fully meeting the academic requirement for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) and partially meeting it for Chartered Engineer (CEng).

2. Academic requirements: students at high schools in China

  • A-Level: the BSc asks for AAA including Mathematics (AABB including Mathematics for four A-Levels); the MEng asks for A*AA including Mathematics (AAAA for four). An A or above in the EPQ may lower the offer by one grade.
  • IB: 36 points for the BSc and 37 for the MEng, each with 5 in HL Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation) or 6 in SL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches.
  • Gaokao: York’s China page says students with the Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate who take the Gaokao need a minimum 75% overall average, plus the graduation certificate, for Year 1 entry to courses with no other essential subject requirements. Computer Science requires Mathematics, and York does not say whether Gaokao applicants can apply directly or what Maths score is needed; email cs-ug-admissions@york.ac.uk before applying.
  • Foundation: the course page also accepts the Foundation Certificate from York’s International Pathway College or an appropriate alternative.
  • AP: neither the course page nor the China page lists AP requirements.

3. Academic requirements: students at Canadian high schools

  • York’s Canada page says provincial diplomas with Grade 12 completed are considered, with a minimum 75% overall from four to six Grade 12 subjects; requirements vary by province and course.
  • Computer Science has higher A-Level requirements and requires Mathematics; York does not publish the Canadian figure for this course, so confirm with the department.

4. English requirements

  • IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, or another accepted test. York offers pre-sessional English courses for those who fall short.
  • Canadian nationals: the Canada page says Canada is a majority English-speaking country under UK visa rules, so Canadian nationals do not need to provide English evidence. This does not apply to Chinese nationals studying in Canada.

5. Transfer students

  • York’s entry FAQ says it is sometimes possible to transfer from another university directly into 2nd Year, but not into 3rd or 4th Year; contact the department to discuss.
  • The Computer Science page gives no specific second-year terms; contact cs-ug-admissions@york.ac.uk.

6. Fees and scholarships

  • Tuition: £33,500 a year for international students starting in 2027/28 (BSc and MEng alike); UK students pay £10,050. International fees rise in later years in line with CPI inflation, up to a maximum of 10%.
  • York International Undergraduate Scholarship: listed at £5,000 for each year of study, open to students from countries including China and Canada. It is awarded automatically to eligible students with an offer by 1 July 2027 and must be accepted by the deadline in the offer email. Students on York’s International Pathway College are not eligible.
  • International Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship: up to £10,000 (first year only); all international offer holders are considered automatically and a panel selects awardees.

7. Timeline (September 2027 entry)

  • UCAS applications can be submitted from 1 September 2026.
  • 13 January 2027: the main UCAS deadline, with equal consideration for applications by this date; you can apply until 30 June 2027, but the course may be full.
  • Applicants by the January deadline should hear by 12 May 2027.
