How to Apply to Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London: The BSc, MSci, Industrial Experience and Year Abroad Options, A-Level Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-18 · Application guides

Queen Mary’s Computer Science BSc (UCAS code G400) requires A-level AAA including Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics, or IB 36; the MSci (G401) requires A*AA. Industrial experience and year abroad versions are available. The school that runs computer science is not among those Queen Mary lists as accepting the Gaokao, so Gaokao students usually start with the International Foundation Year. For BC students, AAA equals 85% in each of five grade 12 courses. English requires IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each component. Overseas tuition for 2027 entry is £34,750 a year, and the school does not accept second-year entry from other universities. Based on Queen Mary’s official information, this guide covers courses, entry, English, applying, transfer, fees and a checklist.

At Queen Mary University of London, computer science is taught by the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), based at the Mile End campus in east London. UK undergraduate applications are made directly to a course through UCAS, and Queen Mary’s institution code is Q50. Here is what you need to know for September 2027 entry, based on Queen Mary’s official information, for students at high schools in China (Gaokao, A-level and IB), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.

1. Courses

  • Computer Science BSc (Hons) (UCAS code G400): three years.
  • Computer Science with Industrial Experience BSc (G402) and Computer Science with Year Abroad BSc (G40Y): four years each, with the placement or year abroad in year 3. You can choose only one. Queen Mary warns that placements are highly competitive and awarded on application, academic record and interview; students without a placement spend year 3 at Queen Mary.
  • Computer Science MSci (Hons) (G401): a four-year integrated master’s with a high-level group project and advanced modules. Queen Mary says it meets the academic requirements for Chartered IT Professional (BCS) and Chartered Engineer (IET) registration. MSci students who study abroad do so in year 4.
  • Computer Science with Foundation BSc (GGX5): four years, with an A-level offer of BCC including at least a B in Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics.
  • Queen Mary advises using the correct UCAS code, as it may not be possible to change it later.

2. Academic requirements: students at high schools in China

  • A-level: AAA for the BSc and its industrial or year-abroad versions, A*AA for the MSci, in each case including Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics. General Studies and Critical Thinking are excluded. GCSE English 4/C and Mathematics 5/B, or equivalents, are also required.
  • IB: the BSc requires 36 points with 6,6,6 in three HL subjects, including Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics at HL (either mathematics course is accepted); the MSci requires 37 points with 6,6,6 at HL and considers mathematics at SL or HL.
  • Gaokao: Queen Mary’s China page lists the schools that accept the Gaokao: Physical and Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Engineering and Materials Science (Materials Science only), and Economics and Finance, with 80% overall and 80% in mathematics. EECS is not on the list, so computer science is generally not open to direct Gaokao applicants; email admissions@qmul.ac.uk if unsure.
  • Foundation: if your qualifications do not allow direct entry, Queen Mary suggests the International Foundation Year; its science and engineering pathway leads to computer science, with guaranteed progression if you meet the requirements.
  • AP: the requirements for Chinese students applying with AP are not published; ask Queen Mary.

3. Academic requirements: students at Canadian high schools

  • British Columbia: Queen Mary’s table requires a Graduation Diploma with a minimum in each of five acceptable grade 12 courses: 85% in each for AAA (BSc) and 90% in each for A*AA (MSci).
  • Alberta: five academic 30- or 31-level grade 12 courses, with 85% in each for AAA; see the table for Ontario and other provinces.
  • Subjects: the course requires Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics. Queen Mary does not spell out the Canadian equivalent, so take grade 12 mathematics or physics and confirm with the university.

4. English requirements

  • EECS undergraduate programmes are in English Band 3: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each of writing, listening, reading and speaking. Equivalent scores for other tests are on Queen Mary’s English requirements page.
  • Summer pre-sessional English is available if you fall short.

5. How and when to apply

  • Apply through UCAS with institution code Q50.
  • UCAS equal consideration date: for most 2027 courses, 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time.

6. Transfer students

  • EECS states that it does not permit second-year entry onto any of its programmes from other universities. Students moving from another university must apply for year 1.

7. Fees and scholarships

  • Tuition (September 2027 entry, course page): £34,750 a year for overseas students on the BSc, industrial experience, year abroad and MSci versions, and £10,050 for UK students; GGX5 with foundation is £26,750 a year for overseas students.
  • Scholarships: the course page says international students may be eligible for a fee reduction and that subject-specific funding exists; names, amounts and conditions are on Queen Mary’s scholarship pages and are not verified here.
