How to apply for art and design at the University of Central Florida: get into UCF first, then submit portfolios after foundation courses, with Graphic Design, Character Animation and Animation & Visualization reviewed once a year in spring, portfolio requirements and timelines for students from China, Canada and transfers

2026-10-19 · Application guides

UCF’s School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) offers the Art BA, the Studio Art BFA and the Emerging Media BFA with Graphic Design, Character Animation and Animation & Visualization tracks. You apply to UCF without a portfolio; after completing set foundation courses you take a portfolio review. The Studio Art Foundations review asks for five drawings, three 2-D design works and three photographs of 3-D works. Emerging Media tracks review portfolios once a year in spring, with one submission per track, and Character Animation takes 30 students per cohort. International first-year applicants must submit the SAT, ACT or CLT, and the application fee is 30 dollars.

At the University of Central Florida (UCF, Orlando), art and design degrees are offered by the School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) in the College of Arts and Humanities. Undergraduate degrees:

  • Art BA: History, Immersive Experience Design, Studio and Visual Arts Management tracks.
  • Studio Art BFA: specializations in book arts, drawing, painting and photography, or combined areas such as advanced design/sculpture, ceramics/sculpture, drawing/illustration, drawing/painting and drawing/printmaking.
  • Emerging Media BFA: Animation & Visualization, Character Animation and Graphic Design tracks.

SVAD also offers a Bachelor of Design in Architecture, which this guide does not cover.

1. Getting in: admission to UCF first, portfolios after enrolment

  • Each program page says you must first apply and be accepted to UCF; the pages we read do not ask for a portfolio when applying to the university.
  • After completing each track’s foundation courses you take the relevant portfolio review. Students aiming for the three Emerging Media tracks are enrolled as Emerging Media Pending BFA until they pass.
  • Program pages note that some figure courses use nude models for reference.

2. Studio Art: the Foundations Portfolio Review

  • Who takes it: students in the Art BA Studio and Immersive Experience Design tracks, the Studio Art BFA and the Art – Studio Minor.
  • Prerequisites: Design Fundamentals 2D and 3D and Drawing Fundamentals 1 and 2 must be completed; History of Western Art 1 and 2 must be completed or in progress, each with a C or better.
  • Portfolio:
    • Five drawings from Drawing Fundamentals, in traditional physical media on paper and drawn from observation, not photographs;
    • Three 2-D design works: one black and white, one showing color theory, the third either;
    • Three photographs of 3-D works on a seamless neutral background, uncropped, with an optional detail image;
    • No digital media; all files in .jpg, up to 45MB in total, with the required file names. Incorrectly named files result in an unsuccessful score.
  • Dates: the fall 2026 window was 10–17 September 2026, with results on 7 October; check the review page each semester.
  • Moving to the Studio Art BFA: be in the Art BA Studio track, pass the foundations review, complete one upper-level course in your specialization, then submit the BFA application and mentor agreement. Faculty in the area decide through interviews and a review of your work. Admitted students are provisional in their first semester and must keep a 3.0 GPA in major courses (the BA requires the university’s 2.0). Students not admitted stay in the BA and may reapply.
  • Outside grades: grades of C- (1.75) or below from other institutions do not meet department requirements.

3. Emerging Media BFA: one review a year, in spring

  • Rules: portfolios are accepted only in spring for fall start; you may submit to each track once, and portfolios for several tracks must go in the same semester. First-time-in-college students submit no later than the spring of their second year, transfer students no later than the spring of their first year. Admitted students follow a two-year cohort sequence.
  • Graphic Design: prerequisites include art history, 2-D and 3-D design, Drawing Fundamentals I and II, Introduction to Digital Media (B or better), digital video, digital imaging, interactive design, introduction to computer art and College Algebra; the others need a C or better, with a 3.0 GPA across these courses. The portfolio is a single multi-page PDF with a title page, a statement of interest of no more than one page, five best projects and more. The review page says applications open 27 January at 9am (no year), with submission and result dates TBA.
  • Character Animation: highly competitive and limited to 30 students per cohort, reviewed by four faculty, with one cohort a year in a two-year full-time program that produces one animated film as a team. The portfolio includes 2-D design, 3-D design or sculpture (5 pieces), observational drawing (4 pieces), time-based media and a recommendation letter; last cycle’s letter deadline was 9 February 2026. UCF encourages applying to Studio Art, Animation & Visualization or Graphic Design at the same time as alternatives.
  • Animation & Visualization: focused on individual work and selected on portfolio quality; UCF says the track is not fan-art friendly and all work must be original. Prerequisites include History of Western Art II, Design Fundamentals 2D and 3D, Drawing Fundamentals I and II, Introduction to Digital Media (B or better) and College Algebra, completed or in progress in the semester you submit, each with a C or better; major courses need a 3.0 GPA.

4. How and when to apply (international first-year)

  • Application: the UCF Undergraduate Application or the Common App (first-year international applicants), non-refundable 30-dollar fee.
  • Testing: international first-year applicants submit official SAT, ACT or CLT scores; SAT and ACT must be within five years.
  • Deadlines (table on the international page): applicants entering directly from outside the U.S. apply by 1 April for fall, 1 October for spring and 1 February for summer; international students already at a U.S. institution by 1 May, 1 November and 1 March. Decisions are rolling.
  • Two versions: the deadline bar at the bottom of the same page lists international applicants as fall 1 March, spring 1 September and summer 1 January. Both are given here; confirm with admissions.
  • Early Action: the first-year page lists an Early Action deadline of 15 October; the international page does not mention it, so confirm whether it applies.

5. Students at high schools in China

  • Records: transcripts, diplomas or exit exam results are sent sealed to UCF by the school, ministry or exam board, with certified translations if not in English; UCF evaluates foreign high school credentials itself.
  • Gaokao and art exams: UCF does not say how the Gaokao or Chinese art exams are used; this is not published.
  • English: IELTS 6.5; TOEFL iBT 4 on the scale from January 2026, or 80 before; Duolingo 120.

6. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)

  • UCF does not publish grade requirements for Canadian or BC curricula; they are not published. Non-U.S. citizens apply as international students with the materials and testing above.
  • The English exemption covers four years of English-taught high school in the U.S. or at a U.S.-accredited school; UCF does not say whether Canadian schools qualify.

7. Transfer students

  • Who counts: students with 12 or more college credits after high school.
  • International transfer deadlines: from outside the U.S., 1 May for fall, 1 October for spring and 1 February for summer; from a U.S. institution, 1 June, 1 November and 1 March.
  • Requirements: tiers by transferable credit, with first-year requirements also applying under 30 credits; each tier needs at least a 2.0 overall college GPA, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. Foreign college work needs a course-by-course evaluation from WES, TEC (SpanTran) or Josef Silny.
  • Portfolios: transfers submit the Emerging Media portfolio by the spring of their first year; transfers not yet enrolled at UCF upload an unofficial transcript PDF when registering for the Studio Art Foundations review. UCF suggests checking course equivalency or asking an academic advisor before relying on outside courses for prerequisites.

8. Costs and scholarships

  • Tuition: based on 28 credits a year, 2026-27 tuition and fees for non-Florida residents are 24,960 dollars, and the on-campus estimate is about 45,278 dollars including housing, food, books, transport and personal costs.
  • International aid: students on F-1, J-1 and similar visas cannot receive federal aid.
  • SVAD scholarships: examples include the CAH Scholarship of up to 1,000 dollars, the Eleanor J. Mathews Art Scholarship of 500 dollars and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship of 1,000 dollars for three Studio Art students; there is also Non-Resident Tuition Assistance, under which qualified applicants in specified art and photography programs are considered for out-of-state tuition waivers. The page does not say whether international students are eligible.
