How to apply for art at Clemson University: no portfolio needed for admission to the BFA in Visual Arts or B.A. Art, portfolios used for department scholarships, four foundation studios before choosing an area, portfolio requirements and timelines for students from China, Canada and transfers
Clemson’s Department of Art offers the BFA in Visual Arts and the B.A. Art, both NASAD-accredited. Clemson says a portfolio review is not required for admission to the Visual Art major but is required for department scholarship consideration; Portfolio Day on 10 October 2026 offers in-person and online reviews. BFA students take four foundation studios and a Foundations Review in the first year, then choose ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture. First-year Early Action closes 15 October and Regular Decision 1 January, with optional testing; the international page asks for all materials by 1 May for fall and says there are no scholarships for international undergraduates.
At Clemson University (Clemson, South Carolina), art degrees are offered by the Department of Art in the College of Architecture, Art and Construction. Both degrees are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD):
- BFA in Visual Arts: a professional studio art degree preparing students for graduate study or studio careers.
- B.A. Art: an interdisciplinary degree first offered in 2020-21, with emphases in studio art (ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture), art history or digital art and design media, plus a required minor or second major.
1. Is a portfolio needed for admission?
- The Portfolio Day page says a portfolio review is not required for admission to the Visual Art major, but it is required for consideration for department scholarships. Seniors applying for the B.A. Art or BFA Visual Art can share their portfolio at Portfolio Day for scholarship consideration.
- The department’s apply page says students apply to Clemson’s Office of Admissions in the early fall of senior year; admission is competitive and based mainly on high school curriculum, grades, class standing, test scores and choice of major.
- Portfolio Day: Saturday 10 October 2026, 9am to 12pm, with in-person and online reviews; students from all high school years and transfer students are welcome. Suggested materials:
- Work in one or more media (2-D or 3-D design, animation, ceramics, drawing, digital media, painting, photography, printmaking), as actual pieces or images;
- Observational work;
- Self-directed work (assignments, independent projects or a sketchbook);
- An unofficial high school transcript, plus AP course information and SAT or ACT scores if available.
2. How the degrees are structured
- BFA first year: four foundation studios covering 2-D, 3-D and 4-D practice with an emphasis on drawing; near the end of the year students exhibit in a mandatory Foundations Review.
- BFA second year: studio courses in six disciplines, then one emphasis: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture. Graphic design opened to BFA students in fall 2024.
- BFA third and fourth years: intermediate and advanced courses in the emphasis, ending with three Senior Studio courses, a BFA exhibition and a portfolio.
- B.A.: the same four foundation studios in the first year, studio courses in four disciplines in the second year, two intermediate studios in the third, and an advanced course plus a professional preparation course in the fourth.
3. How and when to apply
- Applications: Clemson’s own application, Coalition (Scoir) or the Common App; non-refundable 70-dollar fee. No personal statement, recommendation or résumé is required.
- First-year dates (no year stated): opens 1 August; Early Action 15 October, outstanding items by 1 November; Regular Decision 1 January (also the scholarship deadline), outstanding items by 10 January; 1 May is the last day to apply.
- International page: for fall entry, apply and submit all credentials by 1 May, and visa document materials by 1 June; for spring, 1 October and 1 November. Both pages are given here; ask admissions which dates apply to international applicants.
4. Testing, English and international applicants
- Test-optional: applicants without SAT/ACT are still reviewed.
- English: TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.5 (6.0 in each band) or Duolingo 105; waived where English is the primary or an official language.
- Students in China: Clemson does not say how the Gaokao or Chinese art exams are used; this is not published.
- Students in Canada (including BC): grade requirements for Canadian or BC curricula are not published; ask admissions whether you qualify for the English waiver above.
- Funding and insurance: after admission you show funds for your entire time at Clemson, with costs paid at the start of each semester; international students need health insurance with at least 50,000 dollars of coverage.
5. Costs and scholarships
- 2026-27 out-of-state estimate (USD): tuition and fees 42,852, housing and meals 14,880, books and supplies about 1,576, total 60,308.
- International scholarships: the international page says there are no scholarships for international undergraduates at Clemson. Department of Art scholarships require a portfolio review; the page does not say separately whether international students can be considered.
6. Transfer students
- Deadlines: 1 December for spring, 1 July for fall, with rolling review.
- Requirements: 30 transferable semester credits after high school (AP, IB and dual-credit courses do not count), a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (3.0 preferred), and good standing at your current school.
- International transfer documents: college transcripts evaluated by a U.S. credential service (WES and Josef Silny accepted), plus translated course descriptions.
- Portfolio: transfer students are welcome at Portfolio Day; the pages we read do not say how studio credits transfer or whether the Foundations Review can be skipped, so ask the department.
