How to Apply to Engineering at Georgia Tech: 11 Undergraduate Majors in the College of Engineering, Intended Major Matters Though You Are Not Admitted to a Major, SAT or ACT Required, and Admission Routes and Prerequisites for Chinese, Canadian High School and Transfer Students
Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering offers 11 undergraduate majors across eight schools, from aerospace, biomedical and chemical engineering to mechanical and nuclear engineering. First-year applicants are not admitted to a specific major, but intended major is an important part of review. Students get one unrestricted change of major before 60 credit hours; Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering have extra change-of-major conditions. SAT or ACT is required; Early Action 2 closes on 2 November and Regular Decision on 6 January. Transfer applicants to the College of Engineering need at least a 3.3 GPA plus Calculus II, Chemistry I and Physics 2211, depending on the major. Based on official information, this guide covers majors, admission, costs and transfer.
At the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), undergraduate engineering is offered by the College of Engineering. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on official Georgia Tech information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. Engineering majors
- 11 undergraduate majors across eight schools: Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical and Biomolecular, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical, and Nuclear and Radiological Engineering. Computer Science sits in the College of Computing, not Engineering.
- ABET: the College’s accreditation page lists the BS programs in Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical and Biomolecular, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering as accredited by the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission.
- First year: new students take University System of Georgia foundation courses in English, math, humanities, social science, computer science, health and lab science.
- Co-op: the catalog (Mechanical Engineering, for example) describes the Undergraduate Cooperative Program, in which students alternate work and study until they complete three semesters of work, usually starting as sophomores or juniors; graduates receive a Cooperative Plan Designation. Mechanical Engineering also has a research option and a BS/MS program (GPA 3.5 or higher, after 30 credit hours).
2. Admission: not by major, but intended major matters
- No admission to a major or college: first-year applicants do not apply to a specific major, but choose an intended (primary) major on the Common App and may add a secondary one. Georgia Tech says major is an important part of review, and it looks for interest in and preparation for that major. If you want engineering, list a specific engineering major.
- Confirming your major: admitted first-years confirm their major in the admission portal after paying the deposit and before FASET orientation.
- Change of major (catalog): students get one unrestricted change before 60 credit hours (including AP, IB and other credit); after that, or for a later change, the receiving school decides. The Institute can limit access to programs for capacity. The catalog lists Industrial and Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering among programs with change-of-major conditions such as grades or GPA. Transfer students are not eligible for the unrestricted change.
- Scholarships and major: Stamps President’s and Gold Scholarship consideration uses the primary major on the application; recipients cannot change major until the end of their first spring term.
- Start term: Georgia Tech admits for summer and fall, considers every applicant for both, and lists the start term in the admission notification.
3. High school courses and testing
- Courses: the University System of Georgia requires 4 units of English, 4 of math, 4 of science, 3 of social science and 2 of foreign language or computer science; students outside the US system need an equivalent curriculum. Georgia Tech looks for success in the most rigorous courses available (AP, IB, A-Levels, dual enrollment and so on).
- Calculus: the international first-year page encourages students whose national curriculum has no calculus course to consider schoolhouse.world subject certification, particularly in calculus.
- SAT or ACT required: every first-year applicant must submit at least one SAT or ACT; self-reporting is highly recommended. Georgia Tech uses the highest section scores. AP and IB scores are optional.
- The College of Engineering pages do not list separate high school physics or chemistry minimums for engineering majors.
4. Students at high schools in China
- Transcripts: submit records for every year of secondary school; if your high school covers only grades 10 to 12, you also submit a grade 9 transcript before enrolling.
- IB and A-Levels: no minimum IB score, but competitive applicants have mostly 6s and 7s; A-Level students should complete at least three full A-Levels before enrolling. Georgia Tech does not publish a Gaokao policy.
- English: University System of Georgia minimum / recommended scores: TOEFL iBT new scale 3.5 / 4.0 (69 / 79 for tests before 2026); IELTS 6 / 6.5; SAT Reading and Writing 480 is another option. Duolingo scores and InitialView or Vericant interviews are welcome as supplementary materials.
- Application fee: US$85 for international applicants, non-refundable.
5. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)
- Georgia Tech has no specific requirements for Canadian or BC courses; your application is reviewed in the context of your school. SAT or ACT is still required.
- Applicants who are not US citizens or permanent residents are treated as international. Whether Canadian students can skip English tests depends on the University System of Georgia English proficiency page.
6. Fall 2027 timeline (2026-27 cycle)
- Early Action 2 (non-binding): for students outside Georgia, including international students. Apply by 2 November; documents by 16 November; self-reported scores by 8 December; decisions in late January.
- Regular Decision: apply by 6 January; documents and self-reported scores by 22 January; decisions in mid-March.
- Applications open on 1 August; deposits are due by 1 May. Students who want Stamps and similar scholarships must apply Early Action.
7. Costs
- 2027-28 first-year Out of Country estimate (US$): tuition 34,572; fees 1,696; books 800; housing 8,718; food 6,610; personal 2,800; transportation 998; total 56,194 on campus or 59,970 off campus.
- The cost page says the standard cost depends on program, year, residency and housing; it does not list a separate engineering charge, so confirm with Georgia Tech.
- International students cannot receive federal or state aid.
8. Transfer students
- GPA: at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale for the College of Engineering and the College of Computing; the 2025 transfer class averaged 3.7. Math and lab science grades, rigor and progression are an important part of review.
- All majors: equivalents of English Composition 1101 and 1102 and Calculus I (MATH 1551), with a C or better.
- Engineering majors also need: Calculus II (MATH 1552), Chemistry I with lab (1211K or 1310) and calculus-based Physics 2211 with lab; Industrial Engineering takes a lab science elective instead of Chemistry I; Electrical and Computer Engineering also need CS 1301 or 1371.
- Deadlines: fall applications 18 January to 1 March, documents by 16 March, course requirements by 30 May; spring 1 August to 15 September; summer 1 December to 15 January. Competitive applicants, especially for Computing and Engineering, finish their course requirements by the deadline.
- Official credit evaluation comes only after admission. Separate engineering transfer pathways (REPP and the Dual Degree Engineering Program) have their own GPA rules.
