How to Apply to Engineering at NJIT: Newark College of Engineering BS Programs in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Biomedical Engineering and More, Calculus and Physics Grades to Leave General Engineering, for Domestic, International (Including Chinese) and Transfer Applicants
At New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), undergraduate engineering is in the Newark College of Engineering, with BS programs in biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical and general engineering, eight of them ABET-accredited. General Engineering students moving into one of seven engineering majors need a 3.0 GPA and B or better in Calculus I and Physics I after the first semester, or a 2.5 GPA and C or better in both after the first year. High school applicants need math through pre-calculus plus chemistry and physics. Early Action is 15 November or 15 December; 2026-27 tuition and fees are $22,426 for New Jersey residents and $42,300 for non-residents.
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), in Newark, New Jersey, teaches undergraduate engineering in the Newark College of Engineering (NCE). This guide summarises NJIT’s published information for fall 2027 entry for U.S. applicants, international applicants and applicants from China, followed by transfer students.
1. Engineering programs
The 2026-2027 catalog says NCE offers 13 undergraduate degree programs. The engineering BS programs are:
- Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical and General Engineering.
- NCE’s School of Applied Engineering and Technology (SAET) also offers BS programs in engineering technology, including Construction, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical and Surveying Engineering Technology.
ABET: NCE’s accreditation page lists the BS in Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical and General Engineering as accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, and four engineering technology programs (Construction, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical, Surveying) by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission. Computer science is in the Ying Wu College of Computing; we cover it in a separate guide.
Co-op: the NCE undergraduate co-op program offers up to a year of paid work experience while students stay enrolled full-time, alternating semesters of work and study.
2. Admission and entering a major
- Admission: the admissions page lists high school requirements by type of major; the pages we read do not say whether applicants can be admitted directly into a specific engineering major, so ask Admissions.
- Leaving General Engineering: NCE’s change of major policy says General Engineering students declaring Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Computer, Civil, Biomedical or Chemical Engineering must meet one of these:
- After the first semester: 12 NJIT credits, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and B or better in Calculus I (MATH 111) and Physics I (PHYS 111/111A);
- After the first year: 24 credits passed, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, and C or better in Calculus I and Physics I.
- Students interested in SAET programs should talk to their academic advisor first; any continuing student changing majors should review the new requirements with an advisor.
3. High school preparation
- Engineering, computing and science majors: four years of math, with Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus required and calculus strongly recommended; three years of lab science, with chemistry and physics required.
- Engineering technology majors: three years of math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II; pre-calculus strongly recommended) and three years of lab science, with chemistry and physics required.
- Grades: NJIT generally looks for the top 25% of the class, or a 3.0 GPA where schools do not report class standing. There is no minimum GPA or test score; the fall 2026 first-year class averaged a 3.65 GPA, SAT 1339 and ACT 30.
4. Deadlines and testing
- Fall first-year: Early Action I 15 November, Early Action II 15 December, Honors College 1 February, rolling admission 1 March; spring entry 15 November. The page shows no year. The fee is $75.
- Testing: first-year applicants for spring and fall 2027 may apply without the SAT or ACT, though submitting is strongly encouraged; the Honors College and accelerated programs require scores. Some endowed scholarships require scores; students without them are considered for others.
5. U.S. applicants
- Tuition (2026-27, two full-time semesters): New Jersey residents pay $18,352 tuition plus $4,074 fees, $22,426 in total; non-residents pay $38,226 plus $4,074, $42,300 in total.
- Other estimates: on-campus housing and food $18,900, additional indirect costs $5,500, and books and supplies $2,900 for non-architecture first-year and transfer students.
- We did not read NJIT’s aid pages for domestic students; check with the Office of Financial Aid.
6. International applicants
- Deadlines: rolling, but all materials are due by 1 March for fall and 15 October for spring; decisions come two to three weeks after a file is complete.
- English minimums: TOEFL 4.0 on the new scale (79), IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 100 or PTE 53. Credentials from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the U.S. and some other countries are exempt; China and Canada are not on the list.
- Cost: the 2026-27 international estimate is $42,300 tuition and fees, $18,900 living costs and $10,678 for health insurance, books and other items, about $71,878 in total. Scholarship amounts for international students are not published.
7. Applicants from China
- Transcripts: send an official high school transcript in English or a notarized copy; NJIT focuses on math, science and English grades and their trend.
- Gaokao: NJIT does not say how it uses the Gaokao; ask International Admissions.
- AP and IB may earn college credit; have the testing agency send official scores.
- Your high school courses must still meet section 3: pre-calculus, chemistry and physics.
8. Transfer
- Requirements: at least 15 semester credits, including English composition, math (pre-calculus for most majors) and science (chemistry or physics for some majors).
- Deadlines: 1 June for fall and 15 November for spring; the international deadlines page lists 1 March (fall) and 15 October (spring) for undergraduates without separating first-year and transfer, so international transfers should confirm with Admissions.
- Materials: official transcripts from every institution; international transfers need a WES or NACES-member evaluation and certified translations.
- NJIT does not say whether individual engineering majors require extra calculus or physics for transfers.
