Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) is in Rolla, Missouri, and its undergraduate engineering programs belong to the College of Engineering and Computing. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on the university’s websites, for U.S. domestic applicants, international applicants (including applicants from China) and transfer students.
1. Majors
- Engineering B.S. degrees: the fall 2026 and spring 2027 tuition schedule lists these engineering B.S. degrees in its Rate 3 tier: Aerospace, Architectural, Biomedical, Ceramic, Chemical (Chemical and Biochemical Engineering), Civil, Computer, Electrical, Engineering Management, Environmental, Geological, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Mining, Nuclear, Petroleum and Semiconductor Engineering. The 2026-2027 catalog also has program pages for Materials Science and Engineering, Explosives Engineering and Systems Engineering.
- Computer Science is in the same tier and has a separate guide on this site.
- Mechanical Engineering, for example (2026-2027 catalog): at least 128 credit hours, excluding algebra, trigonometry and basic ROTC; an average of at least 2.0 overall and in mechanical engineering courses. A grade of C or better is required in listed courses, including CHEM 1305, calculus (MATH 1214 or 1211, 1215, 2222), differential equations (3304), PHYSICS 1135 and 2135 and the programming elective, both as prerequisites and for graduation. Technical electives can form an emphasis such as energy conversion, manufacturing processes or mechanical design and analysis.
- Co-op: Mechanical Engineering has a cooperative engineering training course (MECH ENG 3002), graded on reports and the supervisor’s evaluation, and there is a cooperative mechanical engineering program delivered at Missouri State University.
2. Admission route
- International applicants choose a specific major: the international freshman page says to select a specific area of study, not Undecided or Undecided Engineering, because your degree program must appear on the I-20 or DS-2019.
- No guarantee of a major: the international freshman page says meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission or a particular major.
- First year: the catalog lists a Foundational Engineering and Computing Program with FR ENG 1100, Study and Careers in Engineering and Computing, which introduces the university’s engineering and computing degrees, careers and expectations. The Mechanical Engineering first-year plan includes this course plus chemistry, calculus, physics, English composition and an introductory mechanical engineering course.
- Entering or changing engineering majors: the pages we read do not publish GPA thresholds for entering or changing majors after enrollment; ask the College of Engineering and Computing.
3. High school preparation
- University minimum (first-time freshman page): at least 17 units of college-preparatory coursework (1 unit = 1 year): English 4, mathematics 4 (Algebra I and higher, such as Algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, math analysis), social studies 3, science 3 (one with lab, such as biology, chemistry or physics), fine arts 1 and 2 units of the same foreign language.
- Engineering-specific prerequisites: the college does not list separate high school physics, chemistry or calculus requirements. In the catalog, Mechanical Engineering students take chemistry and calculus in their first semester and physics in their second.
- AP credit: which AP scores count for engineering courses was not on the pages we read; see the catalog’s credit-by-exam policy.
4. Dates, materials and testing
- Applying: no application fee. You can apply after six semesters of high school (usually after junior year), and your application also counts for merit scholarships.
- Deadlines: for fall, the priority scholarship deadline is 1 December and the final scholarship deadline is 1 February; for spring, apply before 1 December.
- Testing: fall 2027 freshmen can be reviewed with or without ACT/SAT scores. Without scores, a committee decides and asks about extracurricular activities and how you will contribute to the community, and scholarships may be more limited; applicants with a core GPA below 3.2 may be asked for more documents. ACT takers need math, reading and English (science is recommended); superscores are accepted.
- Review: with scores, admission weighs high school courses, GPA or class standing, and the test; for high schools without class standing, GPA.
5. U.S. domestic applicants
- Tuition: engineering is in the highest tier, Rate 3. For 12 to 18 credit hours a semester, the flat rate is $9,747 for Missouri residents and $19,718 for nonresidents, plus a $42-per-credit activity and facility fee and a $223.59 health service fee each semester.
- Chancellor’s Scholarship: top Missouri students with 31+ ACT or 1390+ SAT and a 3.75+ GPA can compete for this four-year full tuition and fees award; only 15 are chosen each year through essay and interview.
- Kummer Vanguard Scholars: $2,000 a year for four years, plus mentorship, innovation and leadership experiences; open to students with a 3.4+ GPA and 26+ ACT or 1240+ SAT.
- Automatic scholarships: awarded on academic credentials and financial need; amounts were not listed on the page we read, so use the university’s scholarship calculator.
6. International applicants
- Applying: rolling admission with no firm deadline; recommended dates are 1 April for fall and 1 October for spring. Unofficial transcripts showing courses, grades, class standing and GPA are fine for the decision, and an optional personal statement of up to 500 words can be added. Only U.S. equivalency evaluations are accepted (not Canadian), and the university may ask for a WES evaluation.
- English: full admission needs one of: TOEFL 4.5 (80 for tests before 1 January 2026), IELTS 6.5, PTE 58, Duolingo 115, Cambridge English 176, ACT English + Reading 37, SAT ERW 500, IB English HL 5, AP English Language 3, or O/A-level English B. There is a list of English-proficiency-exempt countries, not shown on the page we read; a degree from a university in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand or Canada (except Quebec) also exempts you.
- Pathway Program: academically admissible students with lower English scores take English 1110 in their first semester alongside degree courses; minimums are TOEFL 3.5 (60 before 2026), IELTS 5.5, PTE 50, Duolingo 105 or Cambridge 162, and unofficial scores are accepted.
- Funding: not needed to apply, but you must document the source and amount of funds to receive an I-20.
- Fees: nonresident rates (section 5); all international students pay a $150 international student service fee each semester and are enrolled in mandatory health insurance.
- Provost’s International Merit Scholarship: for international freshmen and transfers starting a first bachelor’s degree in 2027-28, $15,000 a year for fall 2027 (split between fall and spring), with no separate application. Renewal needs at least 12 hours a semester and a 3.00 cumulative GPA, for up to eight semesters; company- or government-sponsored students are not eligible, and it cannot be combined with other automatic merit scholarships.
7. Applicants from China
- Gaokao: how Gaokao scores are used is not published; ask international admissions (intadm@mst.edu).
- Transcripts: apply with unofficial transcripts; after admission, official transcripts must come directly from the school with its seal and signature. Only U.S. equivalency evaluations are accepted, and WES may be requested.
- English alternatives: IB English HL 5, AP English Language 3 or A-level English B meet the requirement.
- Major: choose a specific engineering major, not Undecided Engineering (section 2).
8. Transfer
- Under 24 credit hours: send college and high school transcripts (and ACT/SAT if available); you are reviewed as a freshman.
- 24 or more: admission is based on college GPA, at least 2.50 on a 4.00 scale; engineering and science departments generally require at least 2.50, and programs may set higher cumulative GPA standards.
- Credit: transfer credit is evaluated individually, with a course equivalency database; the last 60 credits of any bachelor’s degree must be taken at Missouri S&T. The university has transfer partnerships with more than 50 colleges and universities in Missouri and other states.
- Dates: domestic transfers should apply before 1 July for fall, 1 December for spring and 1 May for summer; the international transfer page lists 1 April for fall and 1 October for spring, under a heading that says first-time freshmen, so international transfers may want to confirm with admissions. No application fee.
