How to Apply to Engineering at Nanyang Technological University: Direct Admission to a Specific Engineering Major, Four-Year Accredited Bachelor of Engineering, and Admission and Prerequisite Requirements for Singapore Citizens and PRs, International Applicants (Including Chinese Gaokao Students) and Transfer Students

2026-10-24 · Application guides

At NTU, undergraduate engineering is offered by the College of Engineering. Applicants list up to five programmes on the application form, and the website does not describe a common first year followed by a split. The Bachelor of Engineering takes four years and is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Board of the Institution of Engineers Singapore. Most majors require H2 Mathematics plus one science (or the equivalent in IB and other qualifications). The international application window is 15 October 2026 to 20 January or 19 March 2027, depending on the qualification. Gaokao applicants need at least 80% of the maximum score and an English test score, and international students who accept the MOE Tuition Grant must work in Singapore for three years after graduation. Based on NTU’s official information, this guide covers degrees, entry, prerequisites, fees, scholarships and transfer.

At Nanyang Technological University (NTU), undergraduate engineering is offered by the College of Engineering. The College lists five schools: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB, jointly managed with the College of Science), Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE). Here is what you need to know for 2027 entry, based on NTU’s official information, for Singapore citizens and permanent residents, international applicants (including Gaokao and international-curriculum students) and transfer students. Computer Science and Computer Engineering sit under the College of Computing and Data Science (the admissions pages list Computer Engineering there), so this guide does not cover them.

1. Degrees in the College of Engineering

  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng), four years: the minimum subject requirements page lists Aerospace Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Information Engineering and Media, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Robotics, plus Engineering with a Minor in Business or International Trading.
  • Bachelor of Science in Maritime Studies, four years: listed under the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering on the College admissions page.
  • Bachelor of Engineering Science with a double major in Process Engineering and Synthetic Chemistry, four years (CCEB).
  • Second majors (four years): the College page lists Business, Data Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Society and Urban Systems, Sustainability, Future Foods, Pharmaceutical Engineering and Medical Biology, with the choices varying by major; see each school’s page.
  • Double degree: Engineering and Economics (with the School of Social Sciences, five years), which the page says applies to the single engineering degrees above.
  • Accreditation: the College admissions page says all Bachelor of Engineering programmes are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Board of the Institution of Engineers Singapore, the Singapore signatory of the Washington Accord.
  • Note: the minimum subject requirements page states that the programme options are as of AY2025-26 and that NTU may update programmes and curricula without notice.

2. How admission works: you apply to a specific major

  • Choose majors on the form: the application process page says you can select up to 5 programmes and opt to be considered for the Honours College signature programmes. The website does not describe entering a common engineering year and being allocated by GPA later; ask the Office of Admissions if you need to confirm.
  • Implied choice scheme: if you pick a programme with a second major, NTU also considers the corresponding programme without the second major after your listed choices. To prefer the version without a second major, list it earlier yourself.
  • Renaissance Engineering Programme: an Honours College signature programme that needs a personal statement and one online reference report; Gaokao applicants awaiting results, and applicants whose results come after 1 April, cannot apply for it in that exercise.
  • Selection: the website says decisions are based mainly on high school academic performance, meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission, and some programmes add interviews, selection tests or portfolios.
  • Changing programme after entry: the transfer page only says current NTU students can apply through the Student Intranet; the conditions are not published, so ask your school.

3. Prerequisites (minimum subject requirements)

The College’s requirements fall into three groups (the table merges rows, so they are grouped here as merged):

  • Aerospace, Civil, Electrical and Electronic, Environmental, Information Engineering and Media, Mechanical and Robotics share one set:
    • Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level: a pass in H2 Mathematics plus a pass in H2 Biology, Chemistry, Computing or Physics;
    • IB Diploma: a pass in Higher Level Mathematics plus a pass in HL Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics;
    • International and other qualifications: a pass in Senior High School level Mathematics plus Senior High School level Biology, Chemistry or Physics, plus a pass in Junior High School level Physics (only for applicants who have not studied Senior High School Physics; those with only H1 or O-Level Physics must take PH1012 instead of PH1011 in semester one).
  • Bioengineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Materials Engineering share another set: A-Level H2 Mathematics plus H2 Biology, Chemistry or Physics (Computing is not listed); IB HL Mathematics plus HL Biology, Chemistry or Physics; international and other qualifications Senior High School level Mathematics plus Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
  • Process Engineering and Synthetic Chemistry double major: H2 (or HL, or Senior High School level) Mathematics and Chemistry.
  • Maritime Studies: A-Level H1 Mathematics or O-Level Additional Mathematics; IB Standard Level Mathematics.
  • Both IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretations are accepted, with no preference.
  • Beyond the subject requirements, you must meet the general admission requirements for your qualification.
  • Mathematics placement test: not published. AP/IB credit: the College page does not give one rule; the MAE course exemption page says students with an A in the relevant H2 subject, or a 7 in the relevant IB HL subject, can be exempted from up to 3 first-year courses (computational thinking, Mathematics I, Physics) with no separate application and email notification in mid to late July, and an exemption test required for the computational thinking course; exempted courses carry no grade and are left out of GPA. See other schools’ pages for their own rules.

4. Timeline, application fee and documents (2027 entry)

  • One intake a year, with the first term typically starting in late July.
  • Application windows depend on the qualification (important dates and general admission requirements pages): Gaokao, IB, international A-Levels (CIE, Edexcel, OCR, AQA), American High School Diploma or AP, HKDSE and others are 15 October 2026 to 19 March 2027; Canadian high school diplomas are 15 October 2026 to 20 January 2027. See the website for other qualifications.
  • Application fee: SGD 15 for Singapore citizens and PRs and SGD 25 for international students, non-refundable, payable by PayNOW, VISA or MasterCard; the application is not processed without payment and documents by the deadlines.
  • Process: choose the portal for your qualification, complete the online form in English in one session (have your passport number, transcripts and English test score sheet ready), then log in with your application number to pay, upload documents and complete the criminal records declaration.
  • Essays and references: the College of Engineering pages do not describe a general supplementary essay; the Renaissance Engineering Programme needs a personal statement and one online reference report. Scholarships need a short essay of up to 250 words and a teacher appraisal (see section 8).
  • Standardised tests: the College pages do not state a general SAT or ACT requirement; English test requirements are below, and the use of Gaokao, AP and similar results is explained under each qualification.
  • Outcomes: timing varies; for the Gaokao, interview invitations are notified by end June and outcomes by mid July; for Canadian diplomas mid June to mid July; for the IB end April to end July.
  • Actual results only: NTU considers only actual results for international qualifications and makes no provisional offers; final-year applicants must submit actual results within 3 days of release.

5. Singapore citizens and permanent residents

  • A-Level: 3 H2 content-based subjects and General Paper taken in the same sitting, plus a pass in Project Work. For the University Admission Score, applicants who sat A-Levels from 2025 are scored on 3 H2 subjects plus GP, with H1 Mother Tongue or a fourth subject counted only if it helps. Engineering majors also need the Mathematics and science subjects above. The portal currently shows this year’s exercise as closed; for 2027 entry, the important dates page gives the day of A-Level results release to 19 March 2027.
  • Polytechnic diploma: apply from 1 to 21 February 2027; a relevant diploma is needed, NTU provides a diploma match generator, and interviews or tests may be required.
  • NUS High School Diploma: apply from 1 December 2026 to 20 January 2027; a major CAP of 2.0 in Mathematics and the relevant science is required.
  • Mother Tongue: citizens and PRs must meet the Ministry of Education policy; you can still apply if you do not, but you must meet it before graduation unless exempted.
  • Grade profiles: the indicative grade profile page gives 10th and 90th percentile A-Level profiles (3 H2 and 1 H1), for example Aerospace Engineering ABC/B to AAA/A, Civil Engineering CCD/D to AAB/B, Electrical and Electronic Engineering CCC/D to AAA/C, Mechanical Engineering CCD/C to AAA/A and Robotics BBC/B to AAA/A. The page does not state which year the data is from, so treat it as a guide.
  • Tuition: SGD 8,300 for citizens and SGD 11,600 for PRs (AY2026/27, before GST, which MOE subsidises). Citizens receive the MOE Tuition Grant automatically and file a declaration after matriculation.

6. International applicants

  • Education: at least 12 years of general education, or taking the Year 12 national examinations in the year of application. Decisions are based mainly on high school academic performance.
  • International A-Levels: at least 4 subjects at A2 in a single sitting; subjects from separate sittings are not accepted. Applicants with 3 subjects are considered case by case, except international applicants applying for subsidised fees, because places are limited. Applicants sitting May/June 2027 A-Levels are not considered in this exercise and should apply in the next.
  • IB Diploma: the website says a very good combination of 5s, 6s and 7s across 3 HL and 3 SL subjects and good EE and TOK grades. You must authorise the IBO to release your results to NTU; May-session candidates can apply by 19 March and submit actual results within 3 days of release.
  • Canadian high school diplomas: British Columbia and Alberta need at least 90% in each of five Grade 12 subjects; Ontario OSSD needs at least 90% in each of six Grade 12 U or M courses; Quebec CEGEP needs a final average of at least 90%. Engineering applicants must have Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors, Calculus, or Pre-Calculus (or an equivalent university-preparatory course).
  • English: required for Gaokao, Taiwan GSAT, Korean CSAT, HKDSE, Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian qualifications and for any qualification where English was not studied at both junior and senior high school or was offered only as a second language. Accepted scores (any one): IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, 6.5 writing, 6.5 speaking; TOEFL iBT 90 (or 4.5 on the new scale) overall, writing 25 (or 4.5), speaking 25 (or 4.5); PTE Academic 55 overall, speaking 55, writing 59; C1 Advanced 170 in each; SAT 1250 total and 600 Reading and Writing; ACT with Writing in a single sitting 30 composite, 30 English, 7 writing; AST English 220. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, C1 and AST scores must be within two years before the deadline; SAT and ACT are valid for five years. These are generally the scores for Science, Engineering and Computing programmes; highly competitive, non-science, double degree and double major programmes may require more.
  • Documents: upload your passport, high school transcript or certificate and so on from the checklist; documents in Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia and Malay need no translation, other languages need an English translation uploaded with the original, and you must be able to produce originals on request. A credential-evaluation body: not published (the Gaokao category requires a CHSI verification report). Indicate on the form if you want to apply for the MOE Tuition Grant.
  • Competition: NTU says admission is highly competitive for international applicants, with limited places, and standards vary by year and programme.

7. Applicants from China

  • Gaokao is used: apply with your Gaokao result, which must be at least 80% of the maximum score, with a CSSD Verification Report from CHSI.
  • Senior 3 students awaiting results: apply with Senior 1 and 2 transcripts and submit official Gaokao results within 3 days of release or the application is not processed. Eligible applicants are invited to an interview in July, and the final decision is based on interview performance. The website says these applicants cannot apply for the Renaissance Engineering Programme in that exercise.
  • No Gaokao: those following the Gaokao curriculum who did not sit it, or who sit AP on their own, apply in this category with high school graduation results, assessed case by case.
  • English: an English test score is required (see section 6).
  • Optional: AST results in at least three subjects (English, Mathematics and one more; Economics as the third subject restricts consideration to non-engineering and non-science programmes); AP results in at least five tests with 4 or 5 in each. Both must be submitted together with Gaokao results or Senior 1 and 2 transcripts, not on their own.
  • Prerequisites: applicants are eligible if they meet the minimum subject requirements for international qualifications, i.e. the “International and other qualifications” row for the programme in section 3.
  • Competitions: medallists in international science Olympiads are considered more favourably for programmes related to their field.
  • Application window: 15 October 2026 to 19 March 2027.
  • Transcripts and Huikao: the document list names Gaokao or Senior 1, 2 and 3 results slips, and Chinese-language documents need no translation; requirements for Huikao records are not published, so ask the Office of Admissions.

8. Fees, Tuition Grant and scholarships

  • Tuition (AY2026/27): with the Tuition Grant, ASEAN international students pay SGD 18,050 and other international students SGD 21,400 (including 9% GST, which students bear). Without the grant (non-subsidised), lab-based programmes are SGD 40,600 and non-lab-based SGD 36,350, GST included. The table does not say which engineering programmes are lab-based and has no separate engineering surcharge; the Renaissance Engineering Programme is listed separately (SGD 13,500 for citizens, 20,100 for PRs, 31,000 for ASEAN international students and 32,000 for other international students). The 2027-entry fees are not yet published, so check the website.
  • MOE Tuition Grant: covers the normal duration of the degree, usually three or four years. PRs and international students opt in on the application form, choose whether to accept it with the offer, and sign the Tuition Grant Agreement, which obliges you to work for a Singapore entity for three years after graduation; two sureties are needed. Without it you pay non-subsidised fees.
  • Scholarships: the scholarship window is the same as the admission window, and you apply after submitting your admission application and before knowing the outcome. The Nanyang Global Scholarship is open to all nationalities and covers subsidised tuition (after the grant), an SGD 6,500 living allowance per year, up to SGD 2,000 per year for NTU hostel residents, a one-off SGD 2,000 computer allowance and up to SGD 8,000 for an overseas programme, with no bond apart from the three-year Tuition Grant bond, and enrolment in the Honours College; you must keep a CGPA of 3.5 out of 5.0. The application needs an essay of up to 250 words and a teacher’s online appraisal, and the page has a selection interview section. The University Engineering Scholarship and others are run by a rotating secretariat; see the FAQ.
  • College-specific scholarships: the scholarship listing can be filtered by programme and nationality; the College of Engineering pages have no separate overview.
  • Financial aid: the website also lists government bursaries and the NTU Opportunity Grant (NOG); see each page for whether international students can apply.

9. Length of study, internships and exchange

  • Length: four years for the Bachelor of Engineering. The Aerospace Engineering page says students who do extremely well in semester one of Year 1 can enter an Accelerated Bachelor’s Programme and finish in 7 semesters (3.5 years) rather than 8; I did not see the same statement on other programme pages.
  • Internships: the College says it works with industry partners on internships and offers SkillsFuture Work-Study Degree Programmes that combine study with structured on-the-job training. The MAE internship page lists three options of 20 weeks, 30 weeks and 10 weeks (May to June); see each school for its own arrangements.
  • Exchange: the College describes global immersion programmes, and EEE says it partners with some 300 universities for exchange.

10. Transfer

  • Students who have completed at least one term at another university apply through the standard process under their high school qualification category and, if accepted, are offered a first-year place.
  • After admission, you can apply to your school for transfer of credits, decided case by case; NTU advises being prepared to complete the new programme in full. GPA and required calculus or physics sequences are not published.
  • If you used the Tuition Grant before, semesters already used are deducted from the semesters available.
  • Polytechnic diploma holders: the MAE page allows exemption of up to 12 AU of major core and up to 6 AU of electives, and a further 12 AU through the Advanced Placement Pathway with partner polytechnics, subject to programme criteria; see other schools’ pages.
  • Deadlines follow the window for your qualification.
