How to Apply to Engineering at the University of North Florida: Four BS Programs in Advanced Manufacturing, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Selective Admission Courses Before Choosing a Major, and Requirements for Domestic, International (Including China) and Transfer Applicants

2026-10-26 · Application guides

The University of North Florida’s School of Engineering offers BS degrees in advanced manufacturing, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering; each catalog page works toward 120 credit hours. Students who intend to study engineering are classified as selective-admission majors until they finish calculus I and II, physics I and II and chemistry I with a C or better, and the academic policies set minimum milestone GPAs (2.0 for civil and advanced manufacturing, 2.5 for electrical and mechanical). Freshmen need a recalculated 2.5 GPA and SAT, ACT or CLT scores; international applicants pay a USD 30 fee.

The University of North Florida (UNF) is a public university in Jacksonville, Florida. Undergraduate engineering is offered by the School of Engineering in the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction (CCEC). Computer science is not covered here; this guide covers the four engineering majors.

1. Engineering majors

  • Four BS programs: Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Each 2026-2027 catalog page works toward a total of 120 credit hours (the catalog says to add electives to reach 120).
  • ABET (as the website states it): the civil, electrical and mechanical engineering pages each say UNF offers an ABET-accredited BS degree. The advanced manufacturing pages read do not say this, so ask the School of Engineering.
  • Course credits: prerequisites are 27 credits for civil, advanced manufacturing and mechanical, and 26 for electrical. Civil engineering also lists 14 foundation credits, 16 core credits, 36 major credits and 12 credits of technical electives.
  • General education: the catalog warns that general education requirements for engineering students differ from other majors; consult an advisor and the Osprey Map before registering.
  • Internships: each catalog lists a 1-3 credit internship course (CGN 4949 Civil Engineering Internship, EEL 4949, EML 4949, EIN 4949 Advanced Manufacturing Internship). Whether positions are paid or how to find them is not stated; the International Center says F-1 students may do an internship only if it is required by the degree program and with prior Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization.

2. How admission works: selective-admission courses first, then a major

  • Selective admission: the School of Engineering’s Selective Admission Policy says everyone who enrolls at UNF intending to major in engineering is classified as a CCEC Selective Admission major until they complete the courses below (or equivalents) with a C or better.
  • Courses: MAC 2311 Calculus I (4), MAC 2312 Calculus II (4), PHY 2048C Calculus-Based Physics I with lab (4), CHM 2045 General Chemistry I (3) with CHM 2045L (not required for electrical engineering), PHY 2049 Calculus-Based Physics II (3) and PHY 2049L (1). The policy says completion is by the second attempt.
  • Then choosing a major: once finished, students choose one of the four engineering majors, after speaking with a School of Engineering advisor in the intended major. The catalog pages list only MAC 2311, PHY 2048C and CHM 2045 (with lab) as the admission criteria, which differs from the seven courses on the policy page; follow the advisor’s guidance.
  • Milestones and minimum GPA: the academic policies page sets a Satisfactory Progress Policy for engineering undergraduates based at UNF. Milestone courses must be passed with a C or better by the second attempt, or the student must change to a non-engineering major. After the milestone courses, the minimum Milestone GPA (MGPA) is 2.0 for civil and advanced manufacturing and 2.5 for electrical and mechanical; below 2.0, a student is suspended from the School of Engineering and must change to a non-engineering major. The page places milestones at the end of the 3rd and 6th terms but heads both course groups “by the end of the 3rd term”; confirm the timing with an advisor.
  • Math entry: the catalog lists college-level precalculus with a C or higher as the prerequisite for MAC 2311.

3. Prerequisites

  • University high school units: English 4, mathematics 4 (Algebra 1 or higher), natural science 3, social science 3, sequential foreign language 2 and academic electives 2.
  • High school math or science specific to engineering: the pages read set none beyond the university’s; the admissions page says programs may have additional requirements, so ask Admissions and the School of Engineering.
  • AP, IB and other exam credit: UNF accepts up to 45 credit hours from AP, IB, AICE and CLEP. Scores do not affect the admission decision and should be sent directly from the testing agency once final. Which scores replace which engineering prerequisites is not stated on the pages read.

4. Rounds, cost to apply and materials (summer/fall 2027)

  • First-year deadlines: Priority round application and materials November 18, 2026 (decision December 9); Standard round December 16, 2026 (decision January 13, 2027); Final round application April 1, 2027 and materials April 15, 2027, with rolling decisions. The application opened July 1, 2026 and the Common App August 1.
  • Application fee: USD 30, non-refundable.
  • Essays and recommendations: the pages read list none and no engineering-specific essay; not stated.
  • Tests: first-year applicants must submit SAT, ACT and/or CLT scores (essay sections not required); UNF superscores across attempts.
  • Standards: the state minimum is a recalculated GPA of 2.5 and minimum test scores. UNF recalculates GPA on required courses, adding 0.5 for honors and 1 for IB, AICE, AP or dual enrollment. Middle 50% of admitted students: fall 2026 GPA 3.96-4.51, SAT 1090-1280, ACT 23-29, CLT 55-83; summer 2026 GPA 3.24-3.70, SAT 940-1110, ACT 18-24.

5. Three kinds of applicants

US domestic applicants

  • Review: admission is based on academic merit. Applicants with all high school study in the US report grades in the STARS system, and a mismatch with the official transcript can lead to rescinded admission.
  • Tuition (2026-2027, per credit hour including fees): Florida residents USD 212.98 and non-residents USD 765.14; students with a Florida Prepaid contract bought before 2007 are exempt from the differential tuition, at USD 175.35 and USD 727.51. The tuition page lists no engineering-specific differential; not stated.
  • Cost of attendance (undergraduate, 2026-2027, a year): Florida residents living on campus USD 24,841 (tuition and fees USD 6,390); non-Florida residents on campus USD 39,241 (tuition and fees USD 20,790).
  • Florida resident scholarships: no separate application; applicants admitted by January 15 get priority. President’s Platinum is USD 5,000 (4.1 GPA with SAT 1330, ACT 29 or CLT 95), Gold USD 4,000, Silver USD 3,000 and others, based on 30 credit hours.
  • Non-Florida residents: out-of-state fee waivers such as First Coast (about USD 14,000; 3.9 GPA with SAT 1300, ACT 28 or CLT 92), Atlantic (about USD 10,000) and Sunshine (about USD 6,000), each waiving part of the out-of-state tuition and also needing no separate application.

International applicants

  • How to apply: the UNF application or the Common App; USD 30 fee, with no application fee waivers for international students.
  • Transcripts: documents equivalent to US high school graduation, generally 12-13 years of study with a diploma or certificate; academic transcripts and exam results of all secondary work; non-English documents need a certified English translation, and documents signed by someone with no educational affiliation are not accepted. The how-to-apply page also says the credential evaluation must be sent directly to Admissions.
  • Tests: the international freshman steps ask for SAT or ACT scores (UNF codes: SAT 5490, ACT 0711).
  • English (applicants from non-English-speaking countries): TOEFL 79, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 110 or PTEA 53; or ACT Reading 19 and English 17, SAT EBRW 490, CLT 38 or AP-IEL 3; or a high school taught in English, shown on the school website, transcript or a medium-of-instruction certificate. Applicants from the listed English-speaking countries do not need TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo; the list includes Canada (except Quebec), the United Kingdom, Ireland, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria and South Africa. UNF does not offer conditional admission for English; the Pre-University level of the UNF English Language Program with an average of 3.0 can serve as proof.
  • Deadlines: the International Center suggests April 1 for fall, October 1 for spring and February 1 for summer; selective-access majors and some others have separate deadlines.
  • I-20 and funds: after admission, request an I-20 in the applicant portal with an affidavit of financial support and a passport copy; an F-1 I-20 requires standard admission to a full-time, on-campus, in-person degree program. The amount of funds required is not stated on the pages read.
  • Scholarships: non-Florida residents and international students can receive the out-of-state fee waivers above. The International Center also offers a limited Non-Florida Tuition Waiver for F-1 students after at least one academic year of full-time study at UNF (fall applications May 1 to July 1). F-1 students are not eligible for scholarships that require the FAFSA.

Applicants from China

  • Credential: the international page gives one rule for all countries (equivalent of US high school graduation, generally 12-13 years). There is no China-specific page.
  • Gaokao: the website does not say whether or how gaokao results are used, and does not describe a graduation-exam certificate, an interview or specified credential agencies for China. Contact Admissions at admissions@unf.edu or (904) 620-1111.
  • Tests and English: international first-year applicants still submit SAT or ACT scores; for English see the international section above.

6. Transfer

  • UNF transfer levels: lower-level (12-29 credits), mid-level (30-59) and upper-level (60 or more). Lower-level needs a recalculated 2.50 high school GPA, a 2.25 overall college GPA, 2.00 at the last institution, test scores on file and a course completion rate of at least 67%. Mid-level needs a 2.25 college GPA and 2.00 at the last institution, plus either a 2.50 high school GPA with test scores or college English composition and intermediate algebra or higher math with a C or better, and a 67% completion rate. Upper-level needs a 2.00 college GPA with a Florida College System or State University System AA degree, or 2.25 without it, 2.00 at the last institution and a 67% completion rate.
  • Entering the School of Engineering: lower-level transfers must have finished Calculus I (MAC 2311) with a C or better, with at most two attempts. Mid-level electrical and mechanical applicants need at least three of six listed courses (Calculus I, II, III, Physics I, Physics II with lab, Chemistry I with lab), with a B or better in at least one; advanced manufacturing and civil applicants need three with a C or better in all. Upper-level electrical and mechanical applicants must have completed the six courses with a B or better in at least three; advanced manufacturing and civil applicants with a C or better in all; and must be able to complete at least 39 credit hours of degree-applicable coursework at UNF. Meeting these does not guarantee admission, and provisional admission may be offered.
  • Deadlines: for fall 2027 the application opens October 1, 2026 and closes July 1, 2027 with materials by July 15; summer April 1; spring November 1, 2026.
  • Credit transfer: the policy says “or equivalent” courses count; a course-by-course equivalency list is not on the pages read, so contact CCEC advising (ccecadvising@unf.edu).
