One-Year Timeline for US and Canadian Undergraduate Applications: A Month-by-Month Guide from the Spring of 11th Grade Through 12th Grade

2026-10-04 · Guides

For undergraduate admissions to the US and Canada, key milestones are concentrated from October of senior year to January of the following year. This article outlines month-by-month tasks from the second semester of junior year through high school graduation: standardized and language tests, summer programs and activities, college selection, essays, early applications and scholarships in November, deadlines around January 15, supplementary materials, admission confirmation, and visas, along with key dates verified on official websites.

Applying to universities in the US and Canada is busiest during the first semester of senior year: US early applications mostly have deadlines in November, while regular decision deadlines are mostly in early to mid-January; the regular decision deadlines for the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Toronto (U of T) are both January 15. Working backward, standardized and language tests should ideally be completed by October of senior year, and essays should be started during the summer before senior year. Below is a month-by-month to-do list, using Fall 2027 enrollment as an example.

Key Dates to Remember

The following dates have been verified on official websites and apply to Fall 2027 enrollment. Dates for other schools vary; please refer to each school's official website.

Second Semester of Junior Year (February–June): Build a Foundation and Set Directions

MonthTo-Do
February–MarchConduct an academic and interest inventory: target countries, general major directions, and current GPA standing. Start preparing for the TOEFL or IELTS and take a diagnostic test.
MarchIf you have a foundation for the SAT, you can take the March 6 test as a trial run. Finalize summer plans: summer school, research, internships, or competitions; many summer programs have spring deadlines.
April–MayPrepare for AP exams (for the Class of 2027, junior year AP exams are taken in May 2026). Organize your activity records since freshman year to see which ones are worth pursuing further.
May–JuneYou can take the SAT in May or June. Communicate with your school counselor to understand the process for letters of recommendation and transcripts. Create a preliminary college list of 15–25 schools.

The most important thing at this stage is your high school GPA. Universities in both the US and Canada look at high school transcripts, and many Canadian schools place particularly high weight on GPA. Do not sacrifice your coursework to chase standardized test scores.

Summer Before Senior Year (July–August): Advance Activities, Tests, and Essays

MonthTo-Do
JulyAttend a summer program or research project to produce concrete outcomes and reflections for your applications. Push hard for the TOEFL/IELTS, aiming to hit your target score during the summer.
July–AugustStart writing your main essay. The Common App essay prompts are usually released early, so you can brainstorm materials and write a first draft.
Early AugustThe new Common App season opens; register an account and fill in basic information and your activities list.
AugustAdjust your college list based on standardized test scores, categorizing them into reach, match, and safety schools. Clarify each school's deadlines, standardized test requirements, and supplemental essay prompts.

Regarding the TOEFL: Starting in January 2026, the TOEFL will switch to a 1–6 scoring scale. For university requirements and conversion methods, please refer to our guide on New TOEFL 1–6 Score Conversion.

First Semester of Senior Year (September–December): The Main Battlefield for Applications

MonthTo-Do
SeptemberFinalize the main essay and start writing supplemental essays. Formally request letters of recommendation from two teachers and your school counselor, giving them plenty of time. Confirm whether you will apply Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA).
OctoberSAT on October 3. The U of T Pearson Scholarship requires school nomination and submission of the U of T admission application by October 16. Complete all essays for early application schools.
NovemberEarly application deadlines for most US schools are around November 1 or November 15 (e.g., MIT's early deadline is November 1); refer to each school's official website. SAT on November 7. U of T Pearson Scholarship materials are due November 6, and U of T recommends submitting the application by November 7. UBC International Scholars Program deadline is November 15.
DecemberMost US early application results are released around mid-December (MIT releases in mid-December). SAT on December 5; the latest test date accepted for regular decision at many schools is in December (e.g., MIT accepts the December test for regular decision); refer to each school's official website. Based on early application results, complete the remaining essays for regular decision applications.

The specific rules for early applications vary significantly: some are binding Early Decision (ED), where you must enroll if admitted; some are non-binding Early Action (EA); and there is also Restrictive Early Action (REA). Rules are subject to each school's official website. For a more detailed early application timeline, see Early Application Countdown.

Regarding financial aid, US universities have vastly different funding policies for international students. Some require financial aid applications to be submitted concurrently with early or regular applications (e.g., MIT's early financial aid materials are due November 30); missing the deadline often means no further opportunity to apply. Major scholarships in Canada (such as the U of T Pearson and UBC International Scholars programs) have deadlines earlier than the regular decision deadlines and require separate planning.

Around Winter Break of Senior Year (January): Regular Decision Deadlines

MonthTo-Do
Early JanuaryRegular decision (RD) deadlines for most US schools fall between January 1 and January 15 (e.g., MIT is January 4); refer to each school's official website.
January 15Regular decision deadlines for most programs at UBC and U of T. UBC's deadline for the Winter Session 2027 (September enrollment) is also on this day.
Late JanuaryCheck the application portal for each school to see if there are any missing document alerts. UBC requires meeting the English language requirements and submitting necessary documents by January 31.

Second Semester of Senior Year (February–June): Submit Materials, Await Results, and Make Decisions

MonthTo-Do
FebruarySupplementary materials for most U of T faculties are due February 1 (Engineering and Music are January 15). UBC's English proficiency proof is due February 15. Mid-year grade reports for US schools are usually submitted by school counselors. MIT's regular decision financial aid materials are due February 15.
MarchUBC requires high school applicants from outside Canada to submit required materials by March 15. Most US schools release regular decision results from mid-to-late March to early April (MIT releases in mid-March).
AprilCompare admitted schools, looking at majors, costs, and scholarships. The UBC International Scholars Program results are announced in April. If waitlisted, express your intent according to the school's requirements.
May 1May 1 is the enrollment confirmation deadline for most US schools (e.g., MIT); refer to your admission letter. Pay the enrollment deposit after confirming. AP exams are held in early to mid-May.
May–JunePrepare visa materials. Final transcripts should be sent to the enrolled school after graduation. Many Canadian schools issue conditional admissions, requiring final grades to meet the requirements stated in the admission letter.

Visas: Start as Soon as You Receive Admission

  • US: After confirming enrollment, the school will issue an I-20 form. The student pays the SEVIS fee and schedules an F-1 visa interview. Specific procedures and materials are subject to the US Department of State and embassy websites.
  • Canada: You generally need to obtain an acceptance letter before applying for a study permit. Proof of funds has a fixed minimum amount, which will be adjusted starting September 2026; see Study Permit Funds for details. Studying in Quebec also requires obtaining a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) first.

Visa policies are subject to change; please refer to the latest official information before submission. This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute immigration advice.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Scheduling standardized tests too late. There are only three SAT dates in the fall (October, November, and December). If you wait until the fall of senior year to take it for the first time, there is very little room for retakes.
  • Focusing only on U.S. deadlines and missing out on Canadian scholarships. The University of Toronto Pearson Scholarship requires the admissions application to be submitted in October, three months earlier than the regular deadline.
  • Requesting letters of recommendation too late. Teachers have to write many letters at the same time. It is safer to ask right when school starts in September.
  • How to use AP scores. Each school has different policies for reporting AP scores and granting credit, so please refer to the official website of each school. Mainland China students can check AP Registration in Mainland China for AP registration arrangements.
  • Treating the planning schedule as a rigid rule. Every student has a different starting point: those who finish standardized tests early can focus on essays and activities; those with language weaknesses should schedule their exams earlier.
