How to Apply to Psychology at Vanderbilt University: Psychology BA/BS in Arts and Science and Child Development or Cognitive Studies at Peabody, With Requirements and Timeline for Chinese, Canadian High School and Transfer Students
At Vanderbilt University, applicants choose an undergraduate school: the Department of Psychology is in the College of Arts and Science, where students declare a psychology BA (30 credit hours) or BS (33) after entry, while Peabody College’s psychology-related majors, such as child development and cognitive studies, are chosen at application. Early Decision I closes November 1 and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close January 1; SAT/ACT is optional for fall 2027 and 2028 entry. International applicants seeking aid are reviewed need-aware, but admitted students have 100% of need met; 2026-27 direct costs are US$96,896. This guide covers English score recommendations, scholarships and transfer rules.
At Vanderbilt University in Nashville, psychology-related majors are split across two schools: the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Science offers a BA and a BS in Psychology, and the Department of Psychology and Human Development in Peabody College offers BS majors such as child development and cognitive studies. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on Vanderbilt’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.
1. Which school to apply to
- College of Arts and Science: home of the Department of Psychology. Each student is assigned a pre-major adviser before arriving and declares a major after entry through a declaration form, then works with a department adviser. Vanderbilt does not state a deadline for declaring psychology.
- Peabody College: applicants specify a major and are admitted into it; child development, cognitive studies and child studies are in the Department of Psychology and Human Development. For transfer applicants to Peabody, Vanderbilt says fit and space in the major weigh heavily.
- The Arts and Science admissions page says 53% of undergraduates double major.
2. Arts and Science psychology requirements
- BA (30 credit hours):
- two fundamental courses: Quantitative Methods (PSY 2100) and Principles of Experimental Design (PSY 2150);
- three distribution courses from neuroscience, sensation and perception, cognitive, social, abnormal and developmental psychology;
- 15 hours of psychology electives. General Psychology (PSY 1200) is no longer required but counts as a BA elective.
- BS (33 credit hours):
- introductory work: one calculus, data science or programming course plus two natural science courses (not counted in major hours);
- two fundamental and four distribution courses (two from each of the biological/cognitive and social/clinical/developmental groups);
- one advanced quantitative or computational course, one advanced research methods course and nine hours of 3000-level or higher electives.
- Comprehensive exam: all BA and BS majors take an in-person psychology comprehensive exam at the start of their final semester, about 60 to 90 minutes.
- Honors: majors with a 3.3 GPA overall and in psychology-related courses can apply at the end of sophomore year after finding a faculty mentor, then do lab research, at least three semesters of honors seminar and a defended thesis in junior and senior years.
3. Decision plans and deadlines (fall 2027 entry)
- Early Decision I (binding): 1 November 2026, decisions mid-December, deposit by 31 December.
- Early Decision II (binding): 1 January 2027, decisions mid-February.
- Regular Decision: 1 January 2027, decisions late March, deposit by 1 May.
- Merit scholarship applications: due 1 December 2026.
- Materials: Common App or Coalition (Scoir), a $50 fee, high school transcript, a counselor letter and two teacher letters.
- Admissions does not offer interviews; students at high schools abroad may record an optional InitialView interview.
4. Testing
- SAT/ACT are optional for fall 2027 and 2028 entry; applicants choose whether to be reviewed with scores, and Vanderbilt says the choice neither helps nor hurts. Scores will be required from fall 2029.
- Vanderbilt superscores both SAT and ACT; the ACT Science and Writing sections are not required.
- International applicants for 2027 and 2028 may apply without SAT/ACT, but proof of English proficiency is required.
5. Students at high schools in China
- Send an official transcript with all high school courses and grades; leaving exam results alone do not complete the application. Non-English documents must be translated by the school or a certified translator, not by the applicant.
- Vanderbilt does not mention the Gaokao and sets no minimum coursework; most successful candidates take the equivalent of five academic subjects each year.
- To be considered for need-based aid, submit the CSS Profile or ISFAA.
6. Students at Canadian high schools
- There are no Canada- or BC-specific requirements; the general rules for applicants from schools outside the US apply.
- Applicants whose first language or language of instruction is English do not need an English test.
7. English requirements (recommended minimums)
- TOEFL iBT (including Home and Paper Editions) 5 on the new scale; TOEFL Essentials 10.5;
- IELTS 7.0; Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 185; LanguageCert 75; Duolingo 130.
- Waivers: English as first language or language of instruction; ACT English above 26; or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing above 630.
- Scores must come from the testing agency or a high school official and are not superscored.
8. Costs and aid
- 2026-27 estimated costs: tuition US$69,822, housing 15,170, food 8,520 and student support fee 3,384, for direct costs of $96,896; books about 1,100 and personal expenses about 1,998, with travel extra. Vanderbilt expects modest annual increases.
- Need-based aid for international students: offered to a limited number of first-years. International applicants who request aid are reviewed need-aware among other aid applicants, and admitted students with need have 100% of it met with grants and scholarships.
- Deadlines: CSS Profile or ISFAA by 1 November 2026 (ED I), 1 January 2027 (ED II) or 1 February 2027 (RD).
- Recent awards: Vanderbilt says that for fall 2026 it offered need-based aid and/or merit scholarships to 89 international students from 54 countries, ranging from $16,815 to $99,998 a year for four years.
- Merit scholarships: international first-years can apply for all merit awards, including three full-tuition signature programs; the scholarship application by 1 December is strongly encouraged.
9. Transfer students
- Deadline: 15 February 2027 priority deadline, with rolling review through spring and decisions from late April.
- Eligibility: at least 12 college credits after high school. Admitted transfers typically have a B+/A- GPA or higher.
- Materials: college transcripts showing spring 2027 courses, high school transcript, two letters (preferably one from a professor) and the Transfer College Report; SAT/ACT optional.
- No need-based aid for international transfers: international transfer applications requesting aid are withdrawn, and there are no merit awards for transfers.
- Credit: evaluated course by course and not counted in your GPA; regardless of credits transferred, you must earn at least 60 credits at Vanderbilt. The registrar’s Transfer Credit Search tool shows previously approved courses.
