How to Apply to Psychology at Georgia Tech: List Psychology as Your Intended Major for the BS in the College of Sciences, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese, Canadian High School and Transfer Students

2026-10-17 · Application guides

At Georgia Tech, psychology is a BS in the School of Psychology within the College of Sciences. First-year applicants do not apply to a specific major but must list an intended major, which is an important review factor. Non-Georgia and international students use Early Action 2, closing on 2 November with decisions in late January; Regular Decision closes on 6 January. SAT or ACT is required, and English proficiency follows University System of Georgia rules. Institutional scholarships are rarely awarded to international students, and the estimated 2027-28 on-campus cost for international first-years is $56,194.

At the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), psychology is offered by the School of Psychology in the College of Sciences, and the degree is the BS in Psychology, which Georgia Tech describes as technically oriented, with a quantitative and experimental approach. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on Georgia Tech’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.

1. Choosing psychology on the application

  • No admission by major, but an intended major counts: first-year applicants do not apply to a specific major or college, but select an intended (primary) major on the Common App and may add a secondary one. Georgia Tech says major consideration is an important part of review, and it looks for evidence of interest in and preparation for that major.
  • Residency matters: as a public university, Georgia Tech aims for Georgia students to be the majority and calls residency one of the biggest factors in admit rates. Applications are read in the context of where you attend school, so a student at a school in China is read alongside other applicants from China.
  • Start term: all applicants are considered for both summer and fall; your start term appears on your admission notification.

2. BS in Psychology requirements

  • Total: 122 credit hours, with at least 39 hours at the 3000/4000 level.
  • Key courses: PSYC 1101 General Psychology, PSYC 2020 Psychological Statistics, PSYC 2015 Research Methods; one of human development, social, abnormal or personality; two of cognitive psychology, biopsychology, learning and memory, and sensation and perception; a capstone (PSYC 4031) or senior thesis (PSYC 4601); 15 credits of psychology electives; plus BIOS 1107 and 1108 with labs, calculus and linear algebra. Marked courses need a C or better.
  • Options: besides the general track there are a Business Option, a Research Option for students heading to graduate school, and an International Plan with two consecutive terms abroad and a language requirement.
  • BS/MS: psychology students with at least 30 Georgia Tech credits, a GPA of 3.3 or higher and fewer than 90 total credits can apply to the BSMS option and double count up to 6 credit hours.

3. Deadlines and decisions (2026-27 cycle)

  • Early Action 2 (non-binding): for non-Georgia students, including international applicants. Apply by 2 November; documents by 16 November; self-reported test scores by 8 December; decisions in late January. (Early Action 1, due 15 October, is for Georgia students.)
  • Regular Decision: apply by 6 January; documents and self-reported scores by 22 January; decisions in mid-March.
  • Deposits are due 1 May. To be considered for merit scholarships such as Stamps, you must apply Early Action; no separate scholarship application is needed.
  • Application fee: $85 for international applicants, non-refundable.

4. Testing and English

  • SAT or ACT required: all first-year applicants must submit at least one SAT or ACT, which can be self-reported; enrolling students send official scores. Georgia Tech uses the highest section scores. AP, IB and A-Level results are optional.
  • English: the University System of Georgia requires all international applicants to show English proficiency by an approved method; institutions may set higher scores. The system lists (minimum / recommended):
    • TOEFL iBT: 3.5 / 4.0 (69 / 79 if taken before 2026);
    • IELTS Academic: 6 / 6.5;
    • other options include SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 480, ACT English 17, PTE 53 / 58 and Cambridge English 169 / 177.
A waiver can apply to students with a secondary or college degree from a system where English is the official language of instruction. Duolingo does not satisfy this requirement; it is welcome only as a supplementary material.
  • Interview: non-native English speakers may submit an unscripted InitialView or Vericant interview by the document deadline of their plan. There are no alumni or staff interviews.

5. Students at high schools in China

  • Submit transcripts for every year of secondary school. Because Chinese high school covers grades 10 to 12, you will also need a grade 9 transcript before enrolling (it can be sent after admission).
  • Students in national curricula with fewer than twelve years or no calculus are encouraged to show subject mastery through the free schoolhouse.world certification, especially in calculus.
  • IB: no minimum, but competitive students have mostly 6s and 7s. A-Level: be on track for at least three full A-Levels before enrolling.
  • Georgia Tech publishes no Gaokao policy.

6. Students at Canadian high schools

  • Georgia Tech publishes no requirements specific to Canadian or BC curricula. Your application is read in the context of where you attend school, and SAT or ACT is still required.
  • Anyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident is treated as an international student.

7. Costs and aid

  • Estimated 2027-28 cost for out-of-country first-years (US$): tuition 34,572 and fees 1,696; with books, housing, food, personal and travel costs the total is 56,194 on campus and 59,970 off campus.
  • Little aid for international students: they are not eligible for federal or state aid, and institutional scholarships from the financial aid office are often not awarded to them. Options include private loans (most need a US citizen or permanent resident co-signer) and emergency tuition loans.

8. Transfer students

  • Eligibility: at least 30 semester (45 quarter) credit hours, and high school graduation before the application opens.
  • Deadlines: fall closes 1 March, documents 16 March, course requirements by 30 May, with regular transfer decisions on 14 May; spring closes 15 September with decisions on 30 October; summer closes 15 January.
  • GPA: minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for College of Sciences majors.
  • Course requirements for psychology: all majors need equivalents of English Composition 1101 and 1102 and Calculus I (MATH 1551); psychology also requires a two-course biology sequence (BIOS 1107 and 1108 with labs), each with a C or better.
  • International transfers: students with study outside the US need a course-by-course foreign credit evaluation with GPA. English proficiency is shown by completing the two English composition courses; TOEFL and IELTS do not replace them but can be self-reported. The official transfer credit evaluation comes only after admission.
