How to Apply to Psychology at Wesleyan University: Admission to the University, Complete Psychology Major Prerequisites by the End of Sophomore Year, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese, Canadian High School and Transfer Students

2026-10-17 · Application guides

Wesleyan University admits students to the university, not to a major; psychology is a BA major, and the department advises completing the requirements to declare by the end of sophomore year. Early Decision I closes on 15 November, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision on 1 January; the SAT/ACT is optional for most applicants, but students in exam-based curricula such as A-Level or IB must submit their results. English testing is optional but strongly recommended, with expected minimums of TOEFL 100, IELTS 7.5 and Duolingo 130. International aid is limited and highly competitive, and Chinese citizens applying for aid are considered for the full Freeman Asian Scholarship. 2026-27 first-year cost of attendance is $101,080.

Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Connecticut, teaches psychology through its Department of Psychology, and the degree is a Bachelor of Arts. Wesleyan admits students to the university, not to a major. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on Wesleyan’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.

1. The psychology major

  • Structure: foundational courses, training in statistics and research methods, advanced seminars and opportunities for original research; Wesleyan calls it “a rigorous and structured path.”
  • Timing: the department advises students who want to major in psychology to prepare early so that the requirements to declare are completed by the end of sophomore year.
  • Areas: 18 faculty across six subareas (cognitive, cultural, developmental, psychopathology, neuroscience and social psychology); optional concentrations in cognitive science or cultural psychology lead to a departmental certificate.
  • Honors: majors with at least a B+ average in psychology courses and a B average in other courses by spring of junior year can write a thesis for honors, evaluated by their advisor and a second reader.
  • BA/MA: the department offers a five-year BA/MA program.
  • Detailed requirements: see WesMaps and the academic catalog.

2. Deadlines and decisions

  • Early Decision I: 15 November (aid materials the same day), decisions mid-December.
  • Early Decision II: 1 January (aid the same day), decisions mid-February.
  • Regular Decision: 1 January (aid by 15 January), decisions late March.
  • International students may apply ED; Wesleyan says most offers to aid-seeking international students are made in Regular Decision, though it also considers them in ED.
  • Materials: Common App or Coalition App via SCOIR, school report and transcript, counselor recommendation, mid-year report, two academic teacher evaluations (ideally one humanities, social science or language and one math or science), and a $65 fee, waived for all aid applicants.

3. Testing and English

  • SAT/ACT: not required for most applicants. However, students in exam-based international curricula (A level, IB, French Baccalaureate and others) must provide their results, actual or predicted, through their school, with actual results sent when available. Students in non-exam-based international curricula are encouraged to consider the SAT or ACT.
  • English: optional but strongly recommended for international applicants whose first language is not English; Wesleyan may request results. Expected minimums:
    • TOEFL iBT (including Home Edition): 5 out of 6, or 100 out of 120;
    • IELTS Academic: 7.5;
    • Duolingo: 130; Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: 190;
    • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 700, or ACT Reading and English 29.
    Self-reported scores are accepted; official scores are due by 1 July for enrolling students.
  • Interviews: no evaluative interviews, but InitialView and Vericant interviews are accepted.
  • Chinese and Canadian curricula: Wesleyan publishes no Gaokao policy and no grade requirements for Canadian or BC curricula.

4. Costs, certification of finances and aid

  • 2026-27 (US$): tuition 75,916, food and housing 21,660, books and personal expenses 2,750; first-year total 101,080 (100,780 for continuing students). All undergraduates live in university housing on a meal plan.
  • Certification of Finances: international applicants not seeking aid must submit the International Student Certification of Finances showing enough funds for four years. Expected support per year is $109,400 for 2027-28, rising each year; year one must be liquid funds. Due 1 December (ED I), 1 February (ED II) or 15 February (RD).
  • Aid: Wesleyan meets 100% of demonstrated need with loan-free packages, but aid for international students is limited and admission for aid-seeking international applicants is extremely competitive. International students who want aid at any point must apply when applying for admission, using the CSS Profile or the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA).
  • Freeman Asian Scholarship: aid applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of China (and Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and others) are considered for the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship, a full scholarship for four years.
  • No aid for international transfer applicants.

5. Transfer students

  • Deadline: fall entry 15 March, with decisions in April; aid requests are also due 15 March.
  • Eligibility: full-time study elsewhere, with at least one full year (6 Wesleyan credits) and no more than two years (16 Wesleyan credits) completed by matriculation; 1 Wesleyan credit equals 4 semester hours. You can enter only as a first- or second-semester sophomore or a first-semester junior.
  • Psychology caution: Wesleyan warns that students entering as first-semester juniors may be barred from certain programs and names psychology among them; check the department’s policy in WesMaps before applying. Transfers are admitted to the university, not a major.
  • Credit: a credit review comes with the offer. Courses generally count if taken on a college campus, similar to a Wesleyan course, at college level and graded C- or better (B- for summer courses); at most two AP or IB credits count.
  • Residence: first-semester sophomores must spend at least five semesters in residence; second-semester sophomores and first-semester juniors at least four.
  • Materials: Common App, College Report, all college and high school transcripts, a mid-term report if enrolled and two college instructor evaluations; SAT/ACT optional; $65 fee, waived for aid applicants.
