How to Apply to Psychology at Grinnell College: No Application Fee, No Admission by Major, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese, Canadian High School and Transfer Students
Grinnell College is a liberal arts college with no application fee and no required supplement; students do not apply to a major and plan their studies with an adviser after entry. Early Decision I closes 15 November, Early Decision II 5 January and Regular Decision 15 January; testing is optional, and admitted students typically have TOEFL 5 or higher (100 on the old scale) or IELTS 7.0 or higher. Grinnell is need-aware for international students but meets 100% of need for those admitted, with merit scholarships of up to $28,000; the 2026-27 on-campus cost starts at about $93,338.
Grinnell College is a liberal arts college in Iowa. It does not admit by major: students follow an individually advised curriculum and declare a major such as psychology after entry. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on Grinnell’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.
1. Psychology at Grinnell
- Lab-based curriculum: from the first psychology course, students learn to think and communicate like psychological scientists and design and conduct research in a hands-on, lab-based curriculum.
- Facilities: laboratories, a behavioral neuroscience suite with a contiguous animal colony, and a freestanding preschool that runs a curriculum alongside its laboratory function.
- Other opportunities: the Psychology Student Seminar Series, independent study and internships.
- Major requirements: the course list is in the college catalog (catalog.grinnell.edu), which could not be reached when this guide was written, so course counts, prerequisites and the declaration timeline were not checked; follow the catalog.
2. Deadlines and decisions (2026-27 cycle)
- Early Decision I: 15 November, decisions mid-to-late December, deposit by 5 January (the international page says mid-January).
- Early Decision II: 5 January, decisions early February.
- Regular Decision: 15 January, decisions late March or early April, reply by 1 May.
- International financial aid forms share the admission deadline.
- Apply through the Common App or QuestBridge with no application fee and no required supplement; an optional 200–450-word short answer is recommended. Two teacher evaluations and a counselor recommendation are required.
3. Testing, English and external exams
- Test optional: SAT and ACT are not required, but you must tell Grinnell by your deadline whether you will submit scores, and you cannot change this afterward. AP scores are not required but may be self-reported.
- English: international applicants whose native language is not English and/or whose high school instruction was not mainly in English must submit official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results. For reference:
- admitted students typically have TOEFL 5 or higher (100 or higher on the old scale); Home Edition, Paper Edition, Essentials and MyBest scores are accepted;
- last year’s Duolingo middle 50% was 125–140;
- Grinnell prefers IELTS 7.0 or higher.
- External exams: depending on your system, Grinnell may require results such as O-Level, A-Level, IB or IGCSE; students in the O-Level/A-Level system must continue through A-Level to be eligible.
- Interviews: not required; InitialView, Vericant and Duolingo interviews are accepted, and Grinnell says they do not weigh heavily in decisions.
- Chinese and Canadian curricula: no Gaokao policy and no Canada- or BC-specific grade requirements are published.
4. Costs and aid
- 2026-27 costs (US$): tuition 73,582 (including required books and course materials), activity fee 572, housing from 8,316, food 9,468; on-campus total from about 93,338.
- International aid:
- Grinnell is need-aware for international students, and competition rises with demonstrated need;
- admitted international students who apply on time have 100% of institutionally determined need met, mainly through grants;
- submit the 2027-28 CSS Profile or Grinnell’s International Student Application for Financial Assistance; if you are not applying, say so on the Common App;
- if you do not apply for aid for your first year, you cannot request it later.
- Merit scholarships: international students are considered for awards of up to $28,000; the process is extremely competitive and needs no separate application.
5. Transfer students
- Who is a transfer: since high school you have earned 12 or more transferable credits at a U.S.-accredited institution, or studied more than two semesters at a non-U.S.-accredited university.
- Deadlines (2026-27): fall 1 March (decisions early May, deposit by 1 June); spring 1 November (decisions late November).
- Credit: all university coursework is assessed; you receive an estimate at admission and an official evaluation before arrival. You can change fields at Grinnell.
- Materials: Common App for Transfer, final high school transcript, every college transcript and two academic evaluations from professors.
- International transfers: Grinnell says it is incredibly rare for it to offer need-based aid or scholarships to international transfer applicants.
