How to Apply to Business at the Australian National University: Gaokao, A-level, IB, AP and BC Conversions for the Bachelor of Commerce and Other Business Degrees, with Deadlines and Scholarships for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-18 · Application guides

ANU’s undergraduate business degrees include the Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration and International Business, taught in Canberra. International applicants are assessed on an ANU Selection Rank, and ANU publishes conversion tables for the Gaokao, BC, Ontario, A-levels, the IB and AP. Direct applications for Semester 1 2027 close on 15 December 2026, and for Semester 2 on 15 May 2027. International tuition for Management and Commerce courses in 2027 is AUD 57,640 per 48 units. Based on ANU’s official admissions information, this guide covers conversions, English, transfer, pathways, fees and scholarships.

The Australian National University (ANU) is in Canberra, Australia’s capital. Its undergraduate business degrees are offered by the ANU College of Business and Economics and include the Bachelor of Commerce, the Bachelor of Accounting, the Bachelor of Finance, the Bachelor of Business Administration, the Bachelor of International Business, and the Bachelor of Finance, Economics and Statistics (Honours). Here is what you need to know for 2027 entry, based on ANU’s admissions website, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.

1. How ANU assesses international applicants

  • ANU Selection Rank: ANU converts your qualification into a Selection Rank out of 99.95 and checks it against the requirement of your chosen degree. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee entry, and some programs are competitive.
  • Degree-specific requirements: the admissions website says each degree’s required rank and prerequisites are published in ANU’s Programs and Courses catalogue. This guide does not include the specific scores for each business degree, so check the catalogue before you apply.
  • Up to three preferences: direct applicants can list three programs in order, and receive one offer for the highest eligible preference. ANU advises against listing three programs with the same requirements.
  • Application fee: AUD 150 per direct application. Most applications are assessed within ten business days.

2. Students at high schools in China

  • Gaokao: ANU publishes province-by-province conversions for tests taken from 2017 onwards. For “other provinces” (750 total): Selection Rank 80 needs 525, 85 needs 544, 90 needs 570 and 95 needs 630. Shanghai (from 2017) needs 462, 479, 502 and 554; Hainan needs 630, 653, 684 and 756. From 2021, Jiangsu and Yunnan tests with a total of 750 use the “other provinces” schedule.
  • A-levels: the higher of your best 3 or best 4 subjects (A*=6, A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1). Rank 80 needs 13 (3 subjects) or 14 (4 subjects); 85 needs 14 or 16; 90 needs 15 or 18; 95 needs 16 or 20. All A-level exams must be taken in the same academic year, except one subject from the preceding or following year.
  • IB (from schools outside Australia): rank 80 needs 31, 85 needs 33, 90 needs 35 and 95 needs 39.
  • AP: students completing a Chinese or US high school diploma can apply with 3 to 4 AP exams, counting only scores of 3 or above. A 4-subject aggregate of 14 equals rank 80, 15 equals 85 and 17 equals 90; a 3-subject aggregate of 10 equals 80, 11 equals 85 and 13 equals 94. Results must be sent directly from the College Board.
  • Predicted results: if you are still completing A-levels, the IB or the HKDSE, you can apply directly with predicted results, but only for Semester 2 (July) and only for programs requiring 94 or below.

3. Students at Canadian high schools

  • British Columbia: a 4-point average of all Grade 12 courses except Graduation Transitions and Career Life Connection (A=4, B=3, C+=2.5, C=2, C-=1). Rank 80 needs 3.45, 85 needs 3.55, 90 needs 3.65 and 95 needs 3.80.
  • Ontario: your best six U or U/C courses, including the mandatory ENG4U. Rank 80 needs 77, 85 needs 79, 90 needs 83 and 95 needs 87. Your school must be listed on the Government of Ontario website, and you must provide Grade 11 and 12 transcripts.
  • Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Quebec and other provinces have their own tables on ANU’s undergraduate indicative entry requirements page.
  • International students at Canadian high schools (rather than Australian Year 12 or the IB) apply directly to ANU.

4. English requirements

  • English is part of ANU’s minimum admission requirements, and degrees may add their own. You can meet it through previous secondary or tertiary study in English, or tests including IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced and PTE Academic.
  • The admissions English page does not list specific scores; these are set out in the ANU English language policy and in each degree’s requirements in the catalogue.
  • ANU may make a conditional offer if you have not yet met all requirements.

5. Transfer and diploma pathways

  • Transfer: ANU says transferring is almost the same as applying for the first time, through the international direct application. International applicants can also meet the minimum requirement with one year of an Australian bachelor degree or a comparable qualification. After you accept an offer, you apply for credit when you enrol; credit is at the discretion of the ANU College responsible for the degree, and not all courses may be credited.
  • Diploma of Business and Economics: 12 months, starting in Semester 1 (February), with entry at ATAR 70 or IB 26.75. Complete it with an ANU GPA of 4.0 (a pass average) to be guaranteed entry to the second year of the Bachelor of Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics or Finance; ANU lists the corresponding Selection Rank as 80.
  • Cohort: ANU’s undergraduate intake in the first half of 2025 was 2,341 students, including 83 (4%) with higher education study and 307 (13%) international students.

6. Timeline for 2027 entry

  • Semester 1 (February 2027): direct applications close on 15 December 2026. The acceptance deadline is 15 January if you are overseas and 31 January if you are in Australia.
  • Semester 2 (July 2027): direct applications close on 15 May 2027. The acceptance deadline is 30 June overseas and 10 July in Australia.
  • Through UAC: international students completing Australian Year 12 (inside or outside Australia), the IB Diploma or New Zealand’s NCEA apply via UAC. ANU recommends that IB school leavers use UAC, as adjustment factors are not applied to direct applications.
  • Programs with additional selection criteria may have different deadlines.

7. Fees and scholarships

  • International tuition for 2027: ANU charges by the discipline band of each course. Management and Commerce, and Economics, courses are in Band 4: AUD 57,640 per 48 units (one full-time year) in 2027. Your actual fees depend on the courses you take; indicative program fees are in the catalogue, and fees are reviewed annually.
  • Vice-Chancellor’s International Achievement Award: for residents of China (including Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR), Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia and the DPRK with a Selection Rank of 85 or above. It gives 20% off first-year tuition, is assessed automatically and is shown as open.
  • International Achievement Award: for residents of other countries, such as students living in Canada, with a Selection Rank of 85 or above. It gives 20% off tuition for up to four years and is also assessed automatically.
  • Chancellor’s International Scholarship: a 25% or 50% tuition reduction by citizenship category; ANU currently shows it as unavailable.
