How to Apply to Business at the University of Western Australia: The Three-Year Bachelor of Commerce with Eight Majors, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
At the University of Western Australia, undergraduate business is the three-year Bachelor of Commerce (BP002), with eight majors: Accounting, Business Analytics, Business Economics, Business Law, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management and Marketing. Intakes are in February and July, the minimum ATAR is 80 and there are no course prerequisites. The Business School holds AACSB and EQUIS accreditation. This guide covers UWA’s conversions for the Gaokao (about 70% for ATAR 80), A-levels, IB, AP and Canadian high school averages (about 70%), English requirements, transfer rules, 2027 dates, and the Global Excellence Scholarship of up to 20% off tuition.
The University of Western Australia (UWA) is in Perth. Its undergraduate business degree is the three-year Bachelor of Commerce (course code BP002), taught by the UWA Business School. Here is what you need to know for 2027 entry, based on UWA’s official information, for students at high schools in China (including A-level, IB and AP students at international schools), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.
1. The degree
- Length and intakes: three years full time, 144 points (24 units, eight a year); intakes in February and July. The Handbook lists UWA (Perth) and Albany as locations.
- Eight majors: Accounting, Business Analytics, Business Economics, Business Law, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management and Marketing. You take at least one degree-specific major.
- Foundation units: Financial Accounting, Microeconomics, Organisational Behaviour, Introduction to Marketing and Economic and Business Statistics, among others. UWA advises completing them early, as many are prerequisites for major units.
- Accreditation: the Business School is accredited by EQUIS and AACSB; the Accounting major is accredited by CA ANZ and CPA Australia.
- Practical resources: UWA cites 30+ industry partners, a financial markets trading room with Bloomberg terminals, and exchange with partner universities.
- Assured Pathways: you can secure a place in a postgraduate professional course such as Law or Medicine from the start of your degree, subject to conditions.
2. Requirements: high schools in China
- You can apply with the Gaokao. The Bachelor of Commerce needs a minimum ATAR of 80 and has no course prerequisites. UWA’s Gaokao table (out of 750; Shanghai is out of 660 and scaled):
- about 65% (488–491) equals ATAR 70;
- about 70% (525–528) equals ATAR 80;
- about 72.5% equals 85 and about 76% equals 90.
- Mathematics: the foundation unit Economic and Business Statistics requires WA Mathematics Applications (or a UWA bridging maths unit). In UWA’s Gaokao subject table, Gaokao Mathematics at 50–65% equals Mathematics Applications, and 65% or higher equals Mathematics Specialist.
- Business Analytics major: its Python programming unit requires Mathematics Methods or equivalent. The Gaokao table lists “no equivalent” for Mathematics Methods, and UWA does not say whether Gaokao Mathematics satisfies it, so confirm with UWA.
- Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate only: accepted together with SAT or ACT results (ATAR 80 equals SAT 1170 or ACT 24).
- International school curricula:
- A-levels: CCC (9 points) equals ATAR 80, BCC (10) equals 85, BBB (12) equals 90;
- IB: 27 equals ATAR 80, 30 equals 85, 32 equals 90;
- AP: with a recognised high school qualification and at least two subjects at 3 or above, an aggregate of 9 equals ATAR 80 and 11 equals 85; AP Calculus AB at 3 or above equals Mathematics Methods.
3. Requirements: Canadian high schools
- Provinces: all provinces and territories except New Brunswick and Quebec; you need the high school graduation diploma.
- Conversion: the average of 5 or 6 final-year subjects. 70 equals ATAR 80, 75 equals 85 and 80 equals 90, so BC students need about a 70% average.
- Prerequisites: Canadian subjects are assessed individually against WA courses such as Mathematics Methods (needed for Business Analytics).
4. English requirements
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0; One Skill Retake is accepted.
- TOEFL iBT: 82 (20 in speaking and writing, 17 in listening and reading), or 4.5 on the 1–6 scale (4 in writing, 3.5 in listening, speaking and reading). Institution code 7496.
- Other tests: PTE 64 (no band below 60); Duolingo 125 (speaking 115, writing 125, reading 115, listening 110).
- Exemptions: for example, at least one recent full-time year of degree study in Canada (excluding Quebec), the US, the UK, Ireland or New Zealand.
5. Transfer students
- From a university: at least one full-time semester of degree study at AQF level 7 or higher in Australia with a GPA of 4.0 (out of 7).
- From vocational study: completion of an AQF level 5 (diploma) qualification or higher.
- Credit: you can ask for credit or advanced standing in your application and apply for more after enrolling.
- Internal transfer: under the course rules, UWA undergraduates with at least 24 points and a weighted average mark of 50, who have not started their final semester and meet their major’s prerequisites, can transfer in during the two yearly transfer windows.
6. Timeline for 2027 entry
- Intakes: Semester 1 (February) or Semester 2 (July); you can apply up to two years ahead.
- Deadlines: domestic and onshore applicants apply by 19 February 2027 for Semester 1 and 16 July 2027 for Semester 2. UWA lists earlier dates (11 January and 7 June 2027) for a set of countries that does not include China or Canada. Some courses have different dates, so check the course page.
- Fee: a non-refundable AUD 150 application fee applies to direct and agent applications.
- Offers: you receive an offer or conditional offer by email and must accept and make the first payment before it expires.
7. Tuition and scholarships
- Tuition: international students pay an annual course fee charged per credit point and indexed each year. The course page does not state the 2027 amount; use UWA’s fee calculator.
- Global Excellence Scholarship: for 2027 entry and open to all nationalities. ATAR 85+ earns 10% off tuition and 90+ earns 20%, each year for the standard course duration. There is no separate application; it is assessed from your final results and shown in your offer. By UWA’s tables, about 72.5% in the Gaokao, a 75% Canadian average, IB 30 or A-levels BCC roughly equals ATAR 85.
