How to Apply to the Wisconsin School of Business at UW–Madison: Direct Admission From High School or the Pre-Business Route After Entry, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese, Canadian High School and Transfer Students
The Wisconsin School of Business (WSB) at UW–Madison awards the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) across 12 majors. About half of its students are directly admitted from high school: listing business as your first-choice major on the UW–Madison application automatically puts you in consideration. Students admitted to UW–Madison but not to WSB can apply through the pre-business process in the spring of their first year, with at least a 3.0 GPA and three prerequisite courses; the admit rate over the past three years was about 45%. The fall 2026 entering class had 709 direct admits and 402 pre-business admits. Business students pay a tuition differential of about $3,213 a year. Based on UW–Madison’s official information, this guide covers both routes, majors, deadlines, testing, transfer, costs and a checklist.
At the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison), undergraduate business is taught by the Wisconsin School of Business (WSB), and the degree is the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on UW–Madison’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. Two routes into WSB
- Direct admission: list business or a specific business major (or “undecided business”) as your first-choice major on the UW–Madison application and you are automatically considered for direct admission to WSB, with no separate application. If business is not your first choice, you are considered for UW–Madison only. About half of WSB students are directly admitted from high school.
- Pre-business route: students admitted to UW–Madison but not to WSB enter the College of Letters and Science as pre-business students and can apply to WSB in the spring of their first year. The other half of WSB students come in this way.
- Numbers: WSB enrolled 1,111 new undergraduates in fall 2026: 709 direct admits and 402 pre-business upperclassmen.
- After admission: direct admits pay the UW–Madison enrollment deposit by 1 May, then receive an email from WSB to accept the direct admission offer separately (no extra deposit).
- Standing out: WSB’s FAQ mentions taking math all four years, joining business organizations, working part time and taking rigorous courses; the review itself is holistic and run by the Office of Admissions.
2. Pre-business application requirements
- Window: once a year, for two weeks in the first half of March. For 2027 it runs 1–15 March; decisions come by 1 July, and admits become business students in September.
- One attempt, within your first four fall/spring terms at UW–Madison.
- GPA: at least 3.0 overall in UW–Madison coursework when you start the application and at the end of the spring term.
- Credits in residence: students who entered as first-years need 24 UW–Madison credits completed or in progress.
- Three prerequisite courses (letter grade, not pass/fail):
- Communications Part A, such as English 100 or Comm Arts 100;
- Calculus: students enrolling in summer/fall 2026 or later take Math 211 or Math 221;
- Economics, such as Economics 101 Microeconomics.
- Application: online form, academic record (pulled automatically), résumé and essay; attending a Pre-Business 101 workshop in the application year is required.
- Admit rates over the past three years: about 45% for all UW applicants, 48% for first-year applicants and 35% for second-year applicants; average admit GPA about 3.80–3.87.
- Conflicting information: the pre-business policies page lists three prerequisites and says the Human Behavior (psychology) requirement is discontinued for students enrolling in summer/fall 2026 or later, while parts of the FAQ and transfer pages still list four, including psychology. Treat the policies page as current and confirm with WSB admissions.
- If not admitted: WSB suggests meeting a pre-business advisor about a parallel plan, such as economics or other related majors, or a business certificate.
3. Twelve majors
- Accounting; Actuarial Science; Entrepreneurship; Finance, Investment, and Banking; Human Resource Management; Information Systems; Management; Marketing; Operations and Technology Management; Real Estate; Risk Management and Insurance; and Supply Chain Management. WSB says students can double major and still graduate in four years.
4. Deadlines and decisions
- Fall Early Action (non-binding): apply by 1 November, materials by 9 November, decisions by the end of January.
- Fall Regular Decision: apply by 15 January, materials by 22 January, decisions by the end of March.
- Spring entry closes 1 October, with decisions at the end of December. Deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
- Materials: an $80 application fee, one letter of recommendation, and an essay on why UW–Madison and your chosen major(s).
5. Testing and English
- Test optional through the spring 2028 term; your choice on the application is final.
- English: applicants educated in non-English-speaking countries submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo unless English was the main language of instruction for all four years of secondary school. Minimums: TOEFL iBT 4.5 for tests on or after 21 January 2026 (80 before), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 115. TOEFL MyBest and TOEFL ITP Plus for China are not accepted.
6. Students at high schools in China
- List business as your first-choice major to be considered for direct admission.
- National-curriculum students still in high school submit grade 9 and grade 10–11 transcripts in Chinese and English, then a final grade 12 transcript after admission.
- A-Level, IB and dual-diploma students follow the requirements for their curriculum; AP Calculus or AP Microeconomics credit, if awarded, can satisfy pre-business prerequisites.
- UW–Madison publishes no Gaokao policy.
7. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)
- Outside Quebec (including BC): submit grade 9, 10 and 11 transcripts; to finalize admission, send grade 12 results with proof of graduation.
- No Canadian grade requirements are published. Four years of English-medium high school waives the English test.
- Business must be your first-choice major to be considered for direct admission.
8. Transfer students
- Direct transfer from Wisconsin public institutions: students at a Universities of Wisconsin campus, a Wisconsin Technical College or a Wisconsin Tribal College can apply to WSB for a fall start. Submit both the UW–Madison transfer application and the WSB pre-business application in March; you need a 3.0 GPA at your current institution and the prerequisites completed by the end of the spring term.
- From private, out-of-state or international institutions: enroll at UW–Madison first and complete at least 12 credits in residence before applying through the pre-business process, within your first four terms; only UW–Madison coursework counts toward the GPA. Prerequisites can be completed before transferring; any left must be taken at UW–Madison.
- Spring-start transfers: from fall 2027, transfers who started the previous spring can use a limited October application, entering business the following spring; each student may apply only once.
- UW–Madison transfer rules: at least 24 transferable credits completed or in progress after high school (AP, A-Level and IB do not count); fall priority deadline 1 February, regular 1 March; spring 1 October.
9. Costs and aid
- 2026-27 estimated cost for non-residents (US$): tuition and fees 45,518, course materials 700, housing and meals 14,994, personal 2,618, transportation 1,222 and loan fees 68, for a total of 65,120. International students also pay International Student Fees.
- Business tuition differential: admitted business students pay an extra differential, but WSB’s pages disagree: the tuition page says $3,213 per academic year ($3,010 for Minnesota residents), while the FAQ says $500.40 per semester ($1,000.08 for Minnesota residents). Confirm with WSB.
- Scholarships: WSB awards almost $2 million a year to admitted and enrolled undergraduates; for direct admits, the UW–Madison application serves as the first-year scholarship application. WSB does not say which awards are open to international students.
- No aid through the financial aid office for international students on a visa. Students needing an F-1 or J-1 visa must show proof of funding for one full year after admission.
