How to Apply to the University of Miami Business School: Direct Admission by Choosing a Business Major, the BBA, BSBA and BSAF Degrees, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese, Canadian High School and Transfer Students
Undergraduate business at the University of Miami is taught at the University of Miami Business School, which offers the BBA, the BSBA and the BS in Accounting and Finance (BSAF). Applicants choose a business major on the application, and admitted first-year students enter the Business School in their first semester; the major chosen does not affect admission. Students admitted elsewhere at UM can transfer in internally with a B or better in calculus and a 3.0 GPA, and external transfers face the same calculus and GPA standards. ED I and EA close on 1 November and ED II and RD on 5 January; testing is optional for students graduating from high schools outside the US. The 2026-27 international cost of attendance is estimated at about US$104,091. Based on official information, this guide covers admission, degrees, transfer, cost and a checklist.
At the University of Miami (UM), undergraduate business is taught at the Business School. Its website now uses the name University of Miami Business School, while some pages still say Miami Herbert Business School. Here is what you need to know for fall 2027 entry, based on UM’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. Getting into the Business School: choose a business major
- Direct first-year admission: to earn a business major you must be a degree-seeking student in the Business School. Select a Business School major when you apply; the Office of Undergraduate Admission reviews all applications, and admitted first-year students matriculate directly into the Business School in their first semester.
- Your choice of major does not matter for admission: the school states that the business major chosen has no direct or indirect influence on the admissions decision.
- The Business School plays no role in admission and offers no merit scholarships: Admission makes the decisions, and scholarships and aid are handled by the Office of Financial Assistance Services.
- Maths: the school notes that strong quantitative skills are typically needed, whenever you join.
2. Degrees and majors
- Three degrees: the BBA emphasizes a broad foundation; the BSBA has a more statistical or mathematical focus; the BS in Accounting and Finance (BSAF) suits students who enjoy data analytics and the quantitative side of accounting and finance. All business degrees are AACSB-accredited.
- Credits: at least 120 credits for the BBA and BSBA and 125 for the BSAF, normally completed in 8 semesters. The last 45 credits must be taken consecutively in the Business School, and graduates need at least a 2.5 GPA.
- Majors: the Bulletin lists BBA/BSBA majors in Accounting, Legal Studies, Business Technology, AI Technology for Business, Economics, Finance, Real Estate, Health Sector Management and Policy, Individualized General Business, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Management, Organizational Leadership and Marketing, plus a BSBA in Management Science, co-majors such as Global Business and Sustainable Business, and several minors.
- Business from year one: students begin business classes in their first year and can take one or two business majors or add a second major or minor from another school.
3. Deadlines and testing
- Early Decision I (binding): 1 November, decisions in mid-December.
- Early Action (non-binding): 1 November, decisions in late January.
- Early Decision II (binding): 5 January, decisions in late February.
- Regular Decision: 5 January, decisions on 1 April.
- ED I and EA applicants are considered for Premier and merit scholarships; ED II and RD for merit scholarships. Admission notes that the final materials deadline is also the last day to change to a major in a different school.
- Testing: UM generally requires the SAT or ACT, but students graduating from high schools outside the US may choose whether to submit, which covers students in China and Canada.
- English: non-native speakers submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo; competitive applicants generally exceed TOEFL 80 (4.5 on the new scale from 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 120.
4. Students at high schools in China
- Gaokao: UM’s requirements-by-country list loads dynamically and could not be read for this guide; check that page or email intladmission@miami.edu.
- A-level and IB: competitive A-level applicants generally take 3 to 4 subjects with predicted grades of B or higher; IB applicants generally have 5 to 7 in each subject.
- English waivers: strong AP English or IB HL English results, SAT Reading and Writing of 650+ or ACT English of 27+ (official scores) and similar cases can qualify.
- Non-English transcripts need official English translations from the school or a recognized translator.
5. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)
- Same deadlines; as graduates of high schools outside the US, Canadian students may apply test-optional.
- No BC-specific grade requirement is published; check the requirements-by-country page or ask Admission.
- Non-native speakers can request an English waiver after three years at an English-medium high school outside the US.
6. Transfer students
- External transfer into the Business School: reviewed by Undergraduate Admission, with these criteria:
- a B or better in MTH 161 (Calculus I, 4 credits), MTH 151, or MTH 140 and 141, or equivalents;
- a cumulative transfer GPA of at least 3.0 and good standing at all institutions;
- agreement to the last-45-credits residency rule; at least half of the business core and of each major and minor must be completed at UM.
- Deadlines: 1 April for fall (aid materials 15 April) and 1 November for spring, with rolling decisions. Applicants with 24+ college credits at entry need no test scores.
- Credit: courses are evaluated one by one through MATES; only C or better transfers, and not every business course is accepted.
- Internal transfer (current UM students):
- a B or better in MTH 161 (or an equivalent) before the final four semesters, with one repeat allowed;
- a cumulative UM GPA of at least 3.0; the pathways page also asks for one semester in residence;
- a Navigate request submitted during the semester; requests are reviewed at the end of each semester.
- Other options: non-business minors, or the Double Cane graduate pathway in senior year.
7. Cost and aid
- 2026-27 estimate (USD, on campus): tuition 66,312; fees 2,030; housing 16,958; meals 9,400; direct costs 94,700; total 98,872 with books, personal and travel costs. The international estimate is 104,091, including mandatory health insurance (4,483) and higher travel costs. 2027-28 costs are not yet published.
- No separate Business School tuition differential is listed.
- Scholarships: all applicants are considered for merit scholarships automatically. Non-US applicants seeking need-based aid submit the CSS Profile by their application round’s deadline.
