How to Apply to the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech: Choose a Business Major When You Apply and Start Business Courses in Your First Semester, With Requirements and Timelines for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business has no separate application: choose a Pamplin major or Business–Undecided on your Virginia Tech application, start business courses in your first semester, and change majors within Pamplin later without reapplying. Virginia Tech reviews by major; first-year Early Action closes on 15 November and Regular Decision on 15 January, and testing is optional. Students in other Virginia Tech colleges need four prerequisite courses and both a business GPA and an overall GPA of at least 3.0 to apply. The 2026-27 out-of-state on-campus cost of attendance is about US$64,756, plus a US$2,550 charge for Pamplin students. Based on Virginia Tech’s official information, this guide covers admission, majors, deadlines, English, costs, transfer and a checklist.
At Virginia Tech, undergraduate business is taught by the Pamplin College of Business, an AACSB-accredited college on the Blacksburg campus. Here is what you need to know for 2027 entry, based on Virginia Tech’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. How first-year students get into Pamplin
- No separate application: simply select a Pamplin major on your Virginia Tech application, or choose Business–Undecided. More than 25% of Pamplin students start as Business–Undecided.
- No secondary admission: once admitted to Pamplin, you do not reapply to a business major later, and you begin business foundations and team projects in your first semester.
- Holistic review by major: admission to Virginia Tech and Pamplin is holistic, and Virginia Tech reviews by the major requested on your application, considering rigor, grades and trends, and test scores if submitted. If you want business, apply to business.
- Changing your requested major: possible up to the deadline (15 November for EA, 15 January for RD); after that, changes wait until you enrol.
2. Majors
- Majors: Accounting & Business Analysis (ABA), Accounting and Information Systems (ACIS), Business Information Technology (BIT), Cybersecurity Management and Analytics (CMA), Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Technology Management (EIT), Event & Experience Management (EEMG), FinTech and Big Data Analytics (FBDA), Finance (FIN), Financial Planning and Wealth Management (CFPF), Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM), Human Resource Management (MHR), Management (MGT), Management Consulting and Analytics (MCA), Marketing Management (MKTG), Professional Sales in Marketing (PSLM) and Real Estate (RLST).
- Curriculum: Pamplin describes a required first-year course on AI and emerging technologies, followed by cross-disciplinary cohort courses and client projects.
- Minors: including Business, Business Sustainability and Digital Marketing Strategy, open to students in other colleges.
3. Deadlines and application materials
- Early Action: 15 November, with transcripts or the STARS record due 1 December; decisions in late February.
- Regular Decision (space available): 15 January, materials due 24 January; decisions in mid-March; reply by 1 May.
- No Early Decision. Apply through the Common App; the international application fee is $70. Letters of recommendation are not required or considered.
- Test optional: first-year applicants entering through fall 2028 choose whether SAT/ACT scores are reviewed; SAT/ACT is not required for international applicants.
- Course requirements: at least three units of math (including Algebra I and II) and two of laboratory science; most admitted students exceed the minimum.
4. Students at high schools in China
- Academic records: students who have not graduated submit transcripts for years 9, 10 and 11; graduates submit years 10, 11 and 12, with certified English translations. A STARS self-reported record can be submitted first.
- Gaokao: Virginia Tech does not say how Gaokao results are used. A-level, IB and AP: the international education systems page explains documents by curriculum; Pamplin sets no separate score thresholds.
- English (non-native speakers, one test within two years): TOEFL 4.5 on the new scale (no section below 4.0) or 80 on the old scale (no section below 16); IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.5; PTE 59; Duolingo 115; Cambridge 176; or alternatives such as SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 550, ACT English 24 or IB English A at 5.
- Funding: you must show sufficient funds for the first year before an I-20 is issued.
5. Students at Canadian high schools
- Materials and deadlines are the same; Virginia Tech publishes no grade requirements for Canadian or BC curricula.
- English waiver: four years of English-only high school (grades 9 to 12) in an English-speaking country, including Canada except Quebec, without ESL courses.
6. Costs
- 2026-27 out-of-state on-campus estimate (US$): tuition 36,428, fees 3,754, housing 10,394 and food 6,826, for direct costs of 57,402; total cost of attendance about 64,756, or about 66,906 for new students including the computer budget.
- Pamplin charge: the same estimate lists an additional US$2,550 for Pamplin College of Business students.
- Scholarships: the international pages do not say whether international students can receive scholarships; check with admissions or financial aid.
7. Transfer students
- External transfer: Pamplin majors accept transfer applications for spring, summer and fall 2027. Spring entry closes on 1 October with decisions in mid-November; summer/fall closes on 1 March with decisions in mid-April. Pamplin says more than 300 students transfer in each year.
- Transfer roadmap (2026-2027):
- Required (complete before transfer with few exceptions): a calculus-based course; ECON 2005 or ECON 2006 (micro- or macroeconomics); ACIS 2115 (financial accounting).
- Strongly recommended: the remaining economics course and ACIS 2116 (managerial accounting).
- Criteria: progress on prerequisites for your intended major and your college GPA. There is no minimum, but most competitive applicants have 3.0 or higher. Transfer review does not consider high school grades or SAT/ACT, so students with one semester of college are usually not competitive; strong spring applicants normally have two full semesters by the October review.
- Changing into Pamplin from another Virginia Tech college: Pamplin majors are restricted. New students apply after receiving first-semester grades, in one of three yearly application periods. Minimums:
- ACIS 2115, ACIS 2116, ECON 2005 and ECON 2006, each C- or better, at least two taken at Virginia Tech;
- a business GPA (from those courses) of at least 3.0 and an overall Virginia Tech GPA of at least 3.0;
- competitive review based on GPA and space; acceptance is not guaranteed. F-1 students must obtain a new I-20 within 10 days of changing major.
Checklist

- Apply to a Pamplin major or Business–Undecided through the Common App by 15 November (EA) or 15 January (RD)

Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver):
- Same deadlines; four years of English-only instruction in Canada (outside Quebec) without ESL waives the English test

- Complete a calculus-based course, one economics course and financial accounting before transfer, ideally also the other economics course and managerial accounting
