How to Apply to the School of Management at Binghamton University: Apply Directly to Accounting or Business Administration, With Requirements and Timelines for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
Binghamton University (SUNY) School of Management offers a BS in Accounting and a BS in Business Administration. First-year, transfer and international students all apply through Undergraduate Admissions and choose one of the two majors. International first-year priority deadlines are 1 November (Early Action) and 15 March (Regular Decision); testing is optional, but English proficiency scores are required. Previously successful external transfers mostly had a GPA of 3.4 or higher with microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and calculus. Internal transfer is very competitive: recently, most admitted students had 57 credits and a 3.5 GPA or higher. The 2026-27 international budget is about US$56,504. Based on Binghamton’s official information, this guide covers degrees, admission, English, costs, transfer and a checklist.
At Binghamton University (State University of New York), undergraduate business is taught by the AACSB-accredited School of Management (SOM). Here is what you need to know for 2027 entry, based on Binghamton’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. Two degrees
- BS in Accounting: pre-professional accounting training; SOM’s MS in Accounting and MBA can be completed with one extra year, including accelerated 4+1 options.
- BS in Business Administration: general or with a concentration in Finance, Consulting and Leadership, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Business Analytics, Quantitative Finance or Entrepreneurship. The Supply Chain Management concentration is only for students enrolled in SOM before fall 2024.
- Programs: SOM also runs the Dean’s Mentoring Program, EY Student Leaders, PwC Scholars, Transformational Leaders and the Zurack Finance Program.
2. How first-year students get into SOM
- Apply through Undergraduate Admissions: SOM states that first-year, transfer and international students all apply through Binghamton’s Undergraduate Admissions, choosing Accounting or Business Administration on the application.
- International first-year priority deadlines: Early Action 1 November (decisions 15 January); Regular Decision 15 March (decisions by 1 April). Later applications are reviewed as space allows.
- How to apply: Common App, SUNY Application or Coalition; $50 fee, with no fee waivers for international students. Submit official transcripts for the last three years, with English translations.
- Test optional: SAT and ACT are not required; you choose whether scores are reviewed.
3. Students at high schools in China
- English is required: non-native speakers must submit at least one English test, even at an English-medium school and even without SAT/ACT; four years at an English-medium school may qualify for a waiver via international@binghamton.edu. Scores must be within two years.
- Middle 50% of admitted students (not minimums): TOEFL 80–95 (old scale) or 4.0–5.0 (new scale); IELTS 6.5–7.0; Duolingo 110–120; PTE 53–65.
- Gaokao: no published policy. Admissions also runs a Chinese-language site and WeChat account.
- AP, A-level and IB credit: SOM accepts AP 3+, IB Higher Level 4+ and A-level exams for credit, up to 32 credits from testing in total; you cannot earn credit again by repeating an equivalent course.
4. Students at Canadian high schools
- Process and deadlines are the same; Binghamton publishes no grade requirements for Canadian or BC curricula.
- Non-native speakers also need an English score, with a possible waiver after four years at an English-medium school.
5. Costs and scholarships
- 2026-27 international annual budget (US$): tuition 29,840, fees 6,485 (excluding SEVIS), housing and food 20,179, for a total of about 56,504. The cost page lists no separate SOM charge.
- Proof of funds: F-1 and J-1 students submit a financial statement and bank documents covering the first year before an I-20 is issued.
- Scholarships: President’s, Provost’s and Dean’s scholarships are awarded at admission without a separate application, and all applicants are considered for Achievement scholarships. SOM also offers scholarships for current students.
6. Transfer students
- External transfer: transfer applicants who choose Accounting or Business Administration are automatically considered by SOM. Admissions states:
- previously successful applicants had a GPA of 3.4 or higher;
- prerequisites: microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and calculus, with micro, macro and statistics or calculus completed with a B or higher by the time of application.
- International transfer priority deadlines: 1 March for fall and 15 November for spring, with rolling decisions.
- Credit: only courses graded C or higher transfer; at least 40 credits must be completed at Binghamton, and at least half of all business and accounting credits. Credits from AACSB-accredited business schools generally transfer; lower-division courses from non-AACSB schools that match Binghamton’s 300+ courses must be validated by an SOM written exam (passing waives the requirement but gives no upper-level credit). Foreign university transcripts need a WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation.
- Intra-university transfer (current Binghamton students): described as extremely competitive.
- Apply in BU BRAIN by 15 November (spring) or 15 March (fall); priority goes to students in the second semester of sophomore year, and freshmen are rarely accepted.
- No GPA cutoff, but recently most admitted students had 57 credits and a 3.5 GPA or higher; transfer students with one semester at Binghamton need at least 3.3 to be considered.
- Complete microeconomics, macroeconomics and calculus or statistics by the end of the application semester with grades of A or B; strong computer (Excel) skills matter. International applicants must also meet SOM’s English requirement.
