How to Apply to the UConn School of Business: Direct Admission by Choosing a Business Major, and Internal Admission With 40 Credits and Eight Critical Courses, With Requirements and Timelines for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-18 · Application guides

Students enter the UConn School of Business in three ways: direct admission as first-year students who choose a business major on the application, direct admission as transfer students, or internal admission after starting in another UConn major. Applications are for a specific major at a specific campus; Storrs offers eight business majors including Accounting, Finance, Management and Marketing. First-year deadlines are 1 November (Early Decision), 1 December (scholarship and honors priority) and 15 January (Storrs regular), and testing is optional. Internal applicants need 40 credits, the eight critical courses and a 3.0 GPA; admission rates for Storrs first choices run 45–60% per term. Based on UConn’s official information, this guide covers pathways, majors, deadlines, English, costs, transfer and a checklist.

At the University of Connecticut (UConn), undergraduate business is taught by the School of Business, with majors at the Storrs main campus and at the Hartford, Stamford and Waterbury campuses. Here is what you need to know for 2027 entry, based on UConn’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.

1. Three pathways

  • The School of Business admits students directly as first-year students, directly as transfer students, or through internal admissions after starting at UConn in another major.
  • First-year: check off a business major when applying to UConn. Your application is for a specific major at a specific campus.
  • Parallel plan: the School of Business encourages every student to identify a non-business alternative.

2. Majors by campus

  • Storrs: Accounting, Analytics and Information Management, Finance, Healthcare Management, Management, Management and Engineering for Manufacturing (MEM, applied for through the College of Engineering), Marketing, and Real Estate and Urban Economic Studies.
  • Regional campuses: Business Administration (Waterbury), Business Data Analytics, Financial Management (Stamford), Financial Technology (Stamford) and Marketing Management (Hartford and Stamford).

3. First-year deadlines and materials

  • Early Decision: 1 November, with notifications from mid-December.
  • Merit scholarship and Honors priority: 1 December.
  • Storrs regular: 15 January; regional campuses 1 May on a rolling basis.
  • How to apply: Common App or Coalition; $80 fee; personal essay of 250–650 words; two recommendations optional but preferred.
  • Test optional: for fall 2026 Storrs admits who submitted scores, the middle 50% was SAT 1320–1460 and ACT 29–34.

4. Students at high schools in China

  • Transcripts: at application, Senior 1 and 2 transcripts showing Senior 3 courses; after graduation, the full three-year transcript and diploma, with official English translations.
  • English (required for non-native speakers; minimums): TOEFL 4.5 new scale (79 old), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 110, PTE 60; waivers include SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 510+.
  • Gaokao: UConn publishes no Gaokao policy, and the School of Business sets no separate score threshold.

5. Students at Canadian high schools

  • Submit grades 9–11 at application; after graduation, grades 9–12 and the provincial diploma. No BC-specific grade requirements are published.
  • Non-native speakers need an English score or a waiver.

6. Costs and scholarships

  • 2026-27 Storrs out-of-state estimate (US$): tuition 39,678, university and student fees 4,564, housing 8,288 and food 6,896; with waivable health insurance, books, transportation and personal costs, the official total is about 67,108. The cost page has no separate international column and mentions no business differential.
  • International scholarships: the Global Excellence Award and Global Distinction Award are for international applicants, renewable for four years, with priority for applications by 1 December. The Stamps Scholarship covers the full cost of attendance; apply by 1 November and interview.
  • Proof of funds: needed for the I-20, covering the first year.

7. Transfer students

  • Direct transfer admission: requires all eight business critical courses completed before transfer. Minimum criteria:
    • Storrs business majors: 3.3 cumulative GPA, at least 40 credits earned and prerequisites completed;
    • regional campus business majors: 3.0 GPA, 40 credits and prerequisites;
    • bachelor’s degree holders are not eligible. Courses from non-AACSB institutions have limited use toward business requirements.
  • Transfer deadlines: 1 April for fall entry to the School of Business (later applications as space allows), 1 May for regional campuses; international students cannot apply for spring.
  • Not yet eligible: transfer into UConn as an Exploratory student or another major and apply internally later.
  • The eight critical courses: ACCT 2001; COMM 1000 or 1100; ECON 1201 and ECON 1202; ENGL 1007, 1010 or 1011; two calculus courses (MATH 1070Q and 1071Q, 1070Q and 1131Q, or 1131Q and 1132Q); STAT 1000Q or 1100Q.
  • Internal admission: applications open during the first two weeks of every fall and spring term; the cycle for fall 2027 opens on 19 January 2027. Minimums:
    • a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the start of the application term;
    • at least 40 credits, including 24 in residence for students admitted as first-years;
    • the eight critical courses completed or in progress, and a business GPA of at least 2.0;
    • at the end of the term, semester, cumulative and business GPAs of at least 3.0, or the offer is rescinded.
  • How internal applications are judged: academics 60%, résumé and essay (college experience) 40%. Admitted students’ cumulative GPAs range from 3.0 to 4.0, averaging about 3.5. Admission rates are 45–60% per term for Storrs first choices and 65–80% for regional campus first choices; UConn suggests adding a regional business major as a second choice.
