How to Apply to Business at the University of Iowa Tippie College: GPA and Test Thresholds for Direct Admission to the BBA, Standard Admission in Year Two, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business offers direct admission to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from high school: a 3.60 GPA plus ACT 26 or SAT 1230 guarantees it, and students meeting one criterion are reviewed as space allows. International students must submit the SAT or ACT to be considered. Others start in Economics or pre-business and apply for standard admission with 24 semester hours, a 2.75 GPA and five prerequisites. Iowa’s minimum for Chinese high school students is an 80 average where D grades are awarded; BC students need a B or 73%. The 2026-27 international business estimate is about $56,447. Based on official information, this guide covers both routes, English, transfer, deadlines, costs and a checklist.
At the University of Iowa in Iowa City, undergraduate business is taught by the Tippie College of Business. Its degree is the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), and it also offers BA and BS degrees in Economics. There are two routes into the BBA: direct admission from high school and standard admission. Here is what you need to know, based on the University of Iowa’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. Two routes into the BBA
- Direct Admit: choose Tippie as your college of interest when applying to Iowa; students who meet university criteria are reviewed automatically:
- a 3.60 high school GPA (4.0 scale, weighted or unweighted) plus ACT 26 or SAT 1230 guarantees direct admission; scores are not superscored;
- students meeting one criterion are reviewed if space allows, starting in early January, with final status by 15 March;
- first-semester grades and test dates as late as February can be used to become eligible;
- direct admission is for fall only.
- International students: tests are not required for general admission if you finished high school outside the US, but the SAT or ACT is required to be considered for Tippie Direct Admission, academic scholarships or the Honors Program.
- Standard Admit: others start in the Economics BA/BS or as pre-business students in Liberal Arts and Sciences and apply in year two with:
- at least 24 semester hours;
- prerequisite, UI and cumulative GPAs of at least 2.75;
- passing grades in MATH 1350 Quantitative Reasoning for Business, STAT 1030 Statistics for Business, ECON 1100 Principles of Microeconomics, BAIS 1500 Business Technology & AI and RHET 1030 Rhetoric;
- no academic misconduct and a completed Pre-Admission Requirement form.
- Majors: Tippie cites eight BBA majors; its menu lists Accounting, Business Analytics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management, Marketing and Risk Management & Insurance.
2. Students at high schools in China
- Iowa international first-year requirements: a 3.0 GPA in academic courses (a US B); three years of high school coursework; completion of secondary school.
- China: Upper Middle School Graduation Certificate; a core-subject average of 80/100 where D grades are awarded or 75/100 where they are not; English proficiency required. Gaokao use is not published.
- IB: an average of 5/7 in core subjects; predicted scores are not considered.
- A-level: the UK entry lists GCSE/IGCSE requirements (five passes in core subjects with a B or 6/9 average); separate A-level requirements are not published.
- Credit: AP, IB and other exams can earn college credit; see Iowa’s credit-by-exam page.
- English: TOEFL iBT 80 (17+ in each section; from January 2026, 4.0 overall with 3.5+ in each), IELTS 6.5 (6.0+ in each band), ACT English 21 or SAT Reading + Writing 540. Students below TOEFL 100 take ESL courses unless they test out on arrival.
3. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)
- BC: Dogwood Diploma with a core average of B or 73%; Ontario OSSD 70%.
- English: the country table lists no English requirement for Canadian credentials, and Canadian citizens with English as a first language are exempt; non-Canadian citizens should confirm with Admissions.
- Direct admission: the same 3.60 GPA plus ACT 26 / SAT 1230, and international students must submit a test.
4. Transfer students
- Standard admission only: external transfers cannot be directly admitted and need 24 semester hours, a 2.75 GPA and the five prerequisites.
- Economics BA/BS: a 2.50 GPA on 24 semester hours, or an Iowa community college AA/AS with 2.00, among other routes; with fewer than 24 hours, Iowa reviews high school and college records and ACT/SAT.
- Deadlines: fall and spring only. International students: fall 15 July, spring 15 November; US students: fall 1 May, spring 1 December.
- Current UI students: change-of-college applications for fall (early 1 March, final 1 May) and spring (early 1 October, final 1 December); denials can be appealed.
5. Deadlines and application fee
- Iowa international first-year: Early Action 2 November (documents by 9 November); regular deadline 1 February (documents by 8 February); later applicants are not eligible for merit scholarships and are admitted case by case. Acceptance deadline 3 May. Application fee $80.
- Tippie’s page recommends applying June to December and gives 1 March as the last date, while noting that 2 February is technically the final date and a waitlist may start after 1 March; it also says applications open in August in one place and June in another. Treat Iowa Admissions’ 1 February deadline as the rule and apply early.
- Tippie scholarships: priority 15 December, final 1 March; admitted Tippie students can be considered for up to 90 scholarships through one application.
6. Costs
- 2026-27 international business estimate: tuition and fees $38,847 (versus $35,442 in Liberal Arts and Sciences, reflecting the Tippie supplement), living expenses $14,022, health insurance $2,628 and books $950, for about $56,447 (excluding travel and personal costs).
- Aid: international students do not qualify for need-based aid; competitive merit scholarships are often renewable for four years.
