How to Renew Your Visa: What to Do When Your Visa Is About to Expire While Studying in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia

2026-09-26 · Application guides

This article explains what to do in different countries when your visa or permit is about to expire during your studies: in the US, an expired visa does not affect your student status, but you must renew it abroad if you travel outside the country, and the travel signature on your I-20 must be less than a year old; in the UK, you can extend your visa from within the country, starting up to 3 months before your new course begins, and the application must be submitted before your current visa expires; in Canada, you must apply for an extension at least 30 days before expiration, and you can restore your status within 90 days after it expires; in Australia, you must reapply with a new CoE before your current visa expires.

As you read through your program, your visa might be expiring soon; you might be moving from your bachelor's to a master's; or your program might have been extended by a semester. Whether you need to renew your visa and how to do so varies greatly by country: in some, an expired visa is not an issue, while in others, being even one day late means losing your status. Based on information from the official government websites of the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, this article explains what to do when your visa or permit is about to expire during your studies.

First, Distinguish Between Two Things: Visa and Status

Many people think of "visa renewal" as a single concept, but it actually involves two different situations:

  • Entry visa: Determines whether you can enter the country;
  • Legal status or permit while in the country: Determines whether you can continue to stay and study.

The US makes the clearest distinction between the two: if your visa expires but your status is still valid, you can continue studying in the US without renewing your visa domestically. In the UK, Canada, and Australia, the visa or permit itself dictates how long you can stay, and you must apply for an extension or reapply before it expires.

US: No Need to Panic if Your Visa Expires, but Be Careful When Traveling Abroad

Visa Expired, Still in the US

According to the Department of Homeland Security, a visa is merely a travel document for entry. After entering the US, your visa can expire, but as long as you maintain your student status, you can continue to stay in the US without needing to renew your visa within the country.

Traveling Abroad and Returning

This is when you need to address your visa. According to the Department of Homeland Security, to re-enter the US, you must carry the following:

  • A valid student visa: If it has expired, you must reapply at a US embassy or consulate outside the US;
  • An I-20 with a travel signature from your school's DSO that is less than one year old;
  • A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of re-entry.

Additionally, do not stay outside the US for more than 5 months.

Reapplying for a visa abroad follows a similar process to the first time: fill out the DS-160, schedule an interview, and bring all required documents. Starting in 2025, the US has significantly tightened its interview waiver policy, meaning the vast majority of applicants must attend an in-person interview. Whether you qualify for a waiver depends on the official website of the embassy or consulate. If you plan to renew your visa in your home country during the summer break, allow plenty of time; if your application is subject to administrative processing, you might not make it back for the start of the semester.

Extending Your Program: Extending the I-20

If you cannot complete your studies by the end date on your I-20 due to academic or medical reasons, you must ask your DSO to extend your program end date. According to the Department of Homeland Security, valid reasons for an extension include academic delays, medical reasons, or DSO errors, and the extension must be processed before the program end date on your I-20. It is too late to apply after this date.

UK: Extending Your Visa from Within the Country

If you finish one course in the UK and move on to the next, you can extend your student visa from within the UK:

  • Requirements: You must have an unconditional offer and a CAS for the new course; the new course generally must be at a higher level than your current one to demonstrate academic progress (exceptions apply for repeating a course, transferring due to the institution losing its sponsor license, or completing a PhD);
  • Timing: You can apply up to 3 months before the new course starts; you must apply before your current visa expires; the new course must start within 28 days of your current visa expiring;
  • Fees: The visa fee is £558, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge;
  • Processing: Decisions are usually made within 8 weeks;
  • While waiting: You can legally stay in the UK, but do not leave the UK before a decision is made, or your application will be considered withdrawn.

If you want to stay in the UK to work after graduation, you should apply for the Graduate Route visa, not a student visa extension. For more details, see this article on UK visas.

Canada: Apply for an Extension at Least 30 Days Before Expiry

  • When to apply: If you plan to continue studying, apply for an extension at least 30 days before your study permit expires, the earlier the better;
  • While waiting: If you apply before your permit expires, you can continue studying under your original conditions until a decision is made;
  • Fees: The study permit extension fee is CAD 150;
  • Passport: A study permit cannot be extended beyond your passport's expiration date, so keep an eye on your passport as well;
  • Changing schools: You must apply for an extension before finishing at your current school, and you cannot start studying at the new school until the extension is approved;
  • Traveling abroad: If you leave Canada before or after applying for an extension, you will need a valid study permit or an approved port of entry introduction letter, along with a valid travel document, to re-enter.

What If It Has Already Expired?

If you fail to apply for an extension before your permit expires, you lose your status in Canada and must stop studying. According to IRCC's Help Centre, you have 90 days to apply for restoration of status, which costs CAD 200 for restoration plus CAD 150 for the new study permit; you cannot continue studying until your status is restored.

Also note: your study permit affects the renewal of your Social Insurance Number, health insurance, and more. Plan ahead to avoid any gaps in your permit.

Australia: Reapply for a Student Visa When Needed

  • When a new visa is needed: You must reapply for a student visa if your current visa is expiring soon and you need more time to finish your studies, or if you are transferring to a lower-level course;
  • Course level: You must continuously be enrolled in a course at the same or higher level as the one for which your visa was granted;
  • Timing: You must obtain a new CoE and submit a new student visa application before your current visa expires to maintain your lawful status.

Australia restricts which visa holders can apply for a student visa from within the country. Specific regulations are subject to the Department of Home Affairs' guidelines.

General Reminders

  • Mark expiration dates on your calendar: Keep track of your visa, permit, I-20, passport, and insurance. Mark each one and start preparing three months in advance.
  • Passports expire too: A Canadian study permit cannot exceed your passport's validity; US re-entry requires your passport to be valid for more than 6 months. If your passport is expiring soon, renew it first.
  • "Apply before expiry" is the bottom line: The UK, Canada, and Australia all require you to submit your application before your current visa or permit expires. Being even one day late can completely change your situation.
  • Be cautious about traveling while waiting: Leaving the UK during a visa extension will result in your application being considered withdrawn; re-entering Canada after traveling abroad requires a valid permit or approved documentation.
  • Consult your school first: Your school's international student office knows your situation best. Talk to them before renewing your visa.

Final Thoughts

The biggest risk in renewing your visa isn't the complexity of the process, but forgetting the deadlines. Write down the expiration dates for all your documents, prepare in advance, and submit your application before they expire. In most cases, this ensures a smooth transition.
