How to Apply to Computer Science at UTS: The Four-Year Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) and Three-Year Bachelor of Information Technology, with Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students
At the University of Technology Sydney, the Faculty of Engineering and IT offers two main computing degrees: the four-year Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours), with a stronger focus on mathematics and research, and the three-year Bachelor of Information Technology. Graduates of both can apply for professional-level membership of the Australian Computer Society. Assumed knowledge is NSW Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Advanced respectively. UTS does not publish Gaokao, IB or A-Level cut-offs for international students; English is IELTS 6.5 (writing 6.0). International first-year tuition for 2027 is AUD 57,240, and the Autumn deadline for offshore applicants is 30 November 2026. Based on UTS’s official information, this guide covers the degrees, requirements, deadlines and a checklist.
At the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), undergraduate computing is taught by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, mainly through two degrees: the Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) and the Bachelor of Information Technology. Here is what you need to know for 2027 entry, based on UTS’s official information, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver students), and transfer students.
1. The two degrees
- Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours): four years full time (or eight part time), 192 credit points, UTS code C09119, CRICOS 092896D, UAC 603230. It comprises core (96 credit points), a major (48), electives (24) and research preparation and project (24). UTS describes it as a course for aspiring researchers or students seeking scientific-oriented computing careers, with a stronger focus on mathematics and research projects with UTS researchers, and a pathway to postgraduate research. Core subjects include Mathematics 1 and 2, Discrete Mathematics, Data Structures and Algorithms, Theory of Computing Science, Programming 1 and 2, Database Fundamentals, Network Fundamentals, and Honours Projects A and B.
- Bachelor of Information Technology: three years full time (or six part time), 144 credit points, UTS code C10148, CRICOS 040941A, UAC 603201. It targets aspiring IT professionals, blending theory and practice with business analysis, teamwork and communication; graduates work as business analysts, IT project managers, network specialists, software developers, systems analysts or web developers, or progress to honours or postgraduate study.
- Intakes: both degrees have Autumn (February/March) and Spring (July) sessions in 2027, at the City campus.
- Professional recognition: graduates of both can apply for professional-level membership of the Australian Computer Society (ACS).
- Industry-year version: UTS states that the Bachelor of Information Technology Diploma in Industry Practice (C10345) is for domestic applicants only.
- The list of majors is in the UTS Handbook, whose robots.txt disallows crawling, so it is not listed here; use “See all subjects and majors” on the course pages.
2. Entry scores
- Lowest selection rank (Autumn 2026, lowest rank offered to a domestic recent school leaver): 81.25 for Computing Science (Honours) and 78.15 for Information Technology.
- International students: the course pages only say you need an Australian Year 12, an AQF Diploma or an equivalent overseas qualification at the required level. UTS does not publish specific Gaokao, IB or A-Level cut-offs; you can ask through the enquiry form on the course page. UTS notes that eligibility does not guarantee an offer.
- Assumed knowledge:
- Computing Science (Honours): HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and any two units of English; English Advanced recommended;
- Information Technology: HSC Mathematics Advanced and any two units of English; Mathematics Extension 1 and English Advanced recommended.
3. Students at high schools in China
- The Gaokao is accepted: UTS states that applicants from China can apply with a Gaokao total that meets the entry standard, or with at least one full-time year of bachelor’s study at a recognised university.
- A-Levels, IB and SAT: A-Levels are scored on the best three A2 subjects (A*=6, A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1); the IB requires the full Diploma with a total, including bonus and penalty points, that meets the entry standard; the SAT must be at a competitive standard.
- Mathematics: for Computing Science (Honours), your senior maths should be equivalent to NSW Mathematics Extension 1.
- Gaokao scholarship: new students from China admitted to an undergraduate degree on their Gaokao results are automatically considered for the UTS Scholarship for Gaokao Students: two 75% tuition scholarships in the Autumn session and one 50% scholarship in the Spring session, ranked by Gaokao score. For Autumn consideration you must apply by 30 September of the previous year, so the Autumn 2027 window has passed; Spring is still possible.
4. Students at Canadian high schools
- UTS’s listed Canadian standard: the Ontario Secondary School Diploma with 6 university or university/college preparation courses; other provinces’ qualifications may also be accepted.
- BC students: UTS does not list BC separately, so confirm with UTS before applying.
- English: Canada is on UTS’s list of recognised English-speaking countries; senior secondary studies comparable with the NSW HSC completed in English meet the requirement.
5. English requirements
- Both degrees use UTS’s standard undergraduate requirement: IELTS (Academic, Online or OSR) 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing; TOEFL iBT 79 (writing 21), or 4 on the 1–6 scale (writing 4.5); PTE 58 (writing 50); Cambridge C1/C2 176 (writing 169); or a pass in UTS College AE5.
- Test scores must be less than two years old when you apply.
6. Transfer students
- At least one full-time year of bachelor’s study at a recognised university can be the basis for admission; UTS also has an entry route for changing from another undergraduate course.
- Credit: equivalent subjects completed at a recognised tertiary institution may receive recognition of prior learning (RPL). Subjects should normally have been completed within ten years before starting, and limits apply. Existing RPL agreements are in UTS’s recognition of prior learning tool.
7. Timeline (2027 entry)
- International deadlines (offshore / onshore applicants): Autumn session 30 November / 15 January; Spring session 30 April / 31 May.
- Submit certified transcripts, English results and a personal statement.
8. Tuition and scholarships
- International tuition (2027 indicative): AUD 57,240 for the first year of either degree; about AUD 243,068 for the full Computing Science (Honours) degree and about AUD 178,680 for Information Technology (including estimated annual increases). UTS graduates receive a 10% discount on a further UTS course.
- Scholarships: UTS international undergraduate scholarships include the Vice-Chancellor’s International Undergraduate Scholarship (full tuition), the A-Level and IB Scholarship and the Academic Excellence International Scholarship; most are awarded automatically to eligible students, so check the scholarship pages. The Gaokao scholarship is described above.
