How to Apply to Computer Science at NJIT: The Ying Wu College of Computing BS and Its AI and Cybersecurity Concentrations from Fall 2026, with Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-18 · Application guides

NJIT’s BS in Computer Science is in the Ying Wu College of Computing and requires 120 credits; from the Fall 2026 cohort, students may choose an optional concentration in Artificial Intelligence (two tracks) or Cybersecurity and Privacy. Computing majors need four years of high school math including pre-calculus, plus chemistry and physics. First-year Early Action deadlines are November 15 and December 15, and the final fall cutoff for international applicants is March 1. Fall 2027 applicants may apply test-optional; IELTS 6.0 is the English minimum. Estimated 2026-27 costs for international undergraduates are about USD 71,878. Based on NJIT’s official information, this guide covers the degree, entry, tests, transfer and costs.

At New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), undergraduate computer science is offered by the Department of Computer Science in the Ying Wu College of Computing; the main degree is the B.S. in Computer Science. Here is what you need to know, based on NJIT’s admissions website, catalog and department website, for students at high schools in China, students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.

1. Degrees and concentrations

  • Two degrees: the BS gives the most comprehensive treatment of computing; the BA in Computer Science is a joint program with Rutgers-Newark with more flexible electives. The college also offers data science, enterprise AI, human-computer interaction, information technology and information systems degrees.
  • Concentrations (optional): the department says that, beginning with the cohort entering in Fall 2026, students may pursue a concentration in Artificial Intelligence (Learning and Reasoning, or Systems and Infrastructure) or in Cybersecurity and Privacy. The catalog says a concentration is five courses (15 credits) chosen within the existing electives.
  • Changing into the major: requirements for moving into Computer Science from another major are not stated on the pages read. Ask the college’s academic advisors.

2. Curriculum (2026-2027 catalog)

  • Credits: at least 120.
  • Mathematics and science: Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics; Physics I and II with labs.
  • Computing courses: Roadmap to Computing, Introduction to Computer Science I and II, Foundations of Computer Science I and II, Programming Language Concepts, Intensive Programming in Linux, Principles of Operating Systems, Introduction to Computer Networks, Database System Design, Introduction to Computer Systems, Introduction to Cybersecurity, Advanced Data Structures and Algorithm Design, Guided Design in Software Engineering and a Senior Project, plus several CS electives at the 300 level or above.
  • Grades: a B or better is expected in CS 100 Roadmap to Computing, and a C or better in all CS courses that are prerequisites of required courses. Co-op courses require a 2.7 GPA.
  • Accreditation: the department page links to ABET accreditation information, which was not checked for this guide.

3. Dates

  • First-year: Early Action I November 15, Early Action II December 15, Honors College February 1, rolling admission March 1; spring start November 15.
  • International final cutoffs: NJIT uses rolling admission but recommends starting at least six months ahead; all materials must be complete by March 1 for fall and October 15 for spring. Decisions come two to three weeks after a file is complete.
  • The application fee is USD 75. The deadline pages show no year.

4. High school courses, testing and English

  • High school courses (engineering, computing and science majors): four years of math, with Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus required and Calculus strongly recommended; three years of lab science, with Chemistry and Physics required.
  • Grades: NJIT generally looks for students in the top 25% of their class, or a 3.0 GPA or higher where schools do not rank. It says there is no minimum GPA or test score.
  • Testing: first-year applicants for Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 may choose not to submit SAT or ACT scores, though they are strongly encouraged to; Honors College and accelerated program applicants must submit them.
  • Admitted student data, two figures: the admission requirements page gives an average high school GPA of 3.65, SAT 1339 and ACT 30 for the Fall 2026 first-year class; the international page gives an average SAT of 1285 and ACT of 26 for the enrolling class (no year). Both are given here.
  • English minimums: TOEFL 4.0 new scale (79 old), IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 100, PTE 53. Degrees from countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the US qualify for an exemption; Canada and China are not on the list.

5. Students at high schools in China

  • Submit an official high school transcript in English or a notarized copy; NJIT looks closely at math, science and English grades and trends.
  • How Gaokao results are used is not stated.
  • AP or IB scores may earn college credit if official score reports are sent. Treatment of A-levels is not stated.

6. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)

  • Requirements for BC or other Canadian curricula are not published; the high school course requirement (pre-calculus, chemistry and physics) still applies.
  • Canada is not on the English exemption list, so non-native English speakers need an English test.

7. Transfer students

  • Requirements: at least 15 semester hours, including English composition, mathematics (pre-calculus for most majors) and science (chemistry and/or physics for some majors).
  • Materials: official transcripts from every college attended; international transfers need a WES or NACES evaluation and certified translations; all college coursework must be reported, even if you do not want credit for it.
  • Deadlines: June 1 for fall and November 15 for spring (Honors College spring January 1). The international deadlines page gives final cutoffs for undergraduate international applicants of March 1 for fall and October 15 for spring without separating first-year and transfer applicants, so international transfers should confirm which dates apply.
  • Whether Computer Science has extra prerequisites for transfer students is not stated.

8. Costs

  • 2026-27 international undergraduate estimate (two full-time semesters): tuition and fees USD 42,300, living expenses USD 18,900, other expenses (health insurance, books, etc.) USD 10,678, for a total of about USD 71,878.
  • Scholarships: applicants who submit SAT or ACT scores can be considered for endowed scholarships that may require scores; others are considered for other scholarships. International scholarship amounts are not stated on the pages read.
