How to Apply to Computer Science at The University of Toledo: the BS in Computer Science and BS in Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering, with Direct Admission and Three Paid Co-ops, and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese and Canadian High School Students and Transfer Students

2026-10-18 · Application guides

The University of Toledo’s College of Engineering offers a BS in Computer Science and a BS in Computer Science and Engineering (accredited by both the Engineering and the Computing Accreditation Commissions of ABET), through the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Engineering admits students directly with no pre-engineering coursework, and all engineering BS majors complete three semesters of paid co-op. International freshmen for fall 2027 should apply by July 1, 2027 and show math proficiency (SAT math, ACT or the ALEKS placement test); IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 71 is required. The 2026-27 international tuition and fees estimate is USD 24,160–24,760, with a USD 8,000 a year award for a 3.0 GPA; students from Toledo’s sister cities Qinhuangdao and Nanchong pay the Ohio resident rate. Based on UToledo’s official information, this guide covers the programs, admission, English, transfer, costs and a checklist.

At The University of Toledo (UToledo), undergraduate computer science is in the College of Engineering and offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). Here is what you need to know, based on UToledo’s website, for students at high schools in China (including A-Level, IB and AP students), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.

1. Degrees and curriculum

  • B.S. in Computer Science: covers the mathematical foundations and design principles of computing systems, data structures and algorithms, AI and machine learning, and computer and network security.
  • B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE): hardware and software, accredited by both the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET. The program page lists a Microelectronics Security concentration.
  • The accreditation page we read lists only Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering; it does not state the accreditation of the B.S. in Computer Science.
  • Co-op: all College of Engineering B.S. majors complete at least three semesters of paid co-op built into the curriculum.
  • Senior project: design, implement and evaluate a prototype for a real-world problem.
  • BS/MS: engineering B.S. students with a 3.3 GPA who have completed at least two of the three co-ops can apply; up to 9 graduate credits count toward both degrees at undergraduate tuition.
  • CSE is also offered at Lorain County Community College. Full requirements are in the academic catalog, which we could not read; check UToledo’s catalog.

2. Getting into the major

  • Direct admission: the College of Engineering admits students directly, with no pre-engineering classes; you start engineering courses in your first year.
  • International freshman requirements: the College of Engineering requires proof of math knowledge, and the how-to-apply page says this includes Computer Science and Cyber Security majors. Engineering lists two tiers:
    • Engineering Science majors: 3.0 GPA, and ACT 22, SAT math 540 or ALEKS 76; four years of high school math (emphasis on trigonometry or pre-calculus); physics strongly recommended;
    • Engineering Technology majors: 2.5 GPA, and ACT 20, SAT math 520 or ALEKS 61.
The pages read do not say which tier applies to Computer Science and to CSE; check with international@utoledo.edu. Students without SAT or ACT can take the ALEKS placement test for USD 20.
  • Not meeting program requirements: international freshmen with a 2.0 GPA who do not meet their bachelor’s program requirements can be admitted to two-year associate degree programs.
  • Placement tests: new engineering students generally take chemistry and math placement tests; Computer Science and Cyber Security majors are exempt from chemistry placement. A 3 or higher on AP Calculus AB or BC exempts you from math placement.
  • Changing into the major: conditions are not stated on the pages read; ask the Engineering Office of Undergraduate Studies.

3. Dates and materials (international applicants)

  • Fall 2027: freshmen should apply by July 1, 2027 and transfers already in the U.S. by August 1; classes begin August 23. These dates are based on visa wait times; later applications may be moved to the next term.
  • How to apply: students in their last year of high school can use the Common App; all applicants can use the UToledo application (choose “International Application”). The fee amount is not stated on the pages read.
  • Materials: transcripts from every school attended (all must be listed), proof of English and the math proficiency above. Transcript rules vary by country; translations by students are not accepted.

4. English requirements

  • TOEFL iBT 71 (4 after January 21, 2026), IELTS 6.0, PTE 48, Duolingo 105, Cambridge English 170, MET 52 or iTEP 3.7, within two years.
  • Or SAT EBRW 510 or ACT English 21; or completion of 3 A Level subjects or 3 IB Higher Level subjects.
  • Admissible students who need more English start at UToledo’s American Language Institute.

5. Students at high schools in China

  • Gaokao: the website does not say how Gaokao results are used; GPA is based on cumulative high school grades.
  • A-Level and IB: completing 3 A Level or 3 IB Higher Level subjects satisfies English. Exam credit equivalencies are not checked here.
  • Sister Cities rate: new undergraduates whose permanent address is in Qinhuangdao or Nanchong, Toledo’s sister cities, pay the Ohio resident tuition rate but are not eligible for the International Rocket Award.

6. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)

  • English: Canada is on the list of countries whose citizens are exempt from the English requirement.
  • Transcripts: Canadian schools must send transcripts directly to international@utoledo.edu, through services such as Parchment, or by mail.
  • Grade requirements for BC and other Canadian curricula are not published; the GPA and math requirements above apply.

7. Transfer students

  • Engineering Science majors: a 2.75 college GPA and a C or better in calculus equivalent to MATH 1850 and general chemistry equivalent to CHEM 1230.
  • Engineering Technology majors: a 2.25 college GPA; Computer Science and Engineering Technology also needs a C or higher in calculus.
  • Again, which category applies to Computer Science and to CSE is not stated; check with admissions. Students admitted to UToledo but not their program start in Exploratory Studies in University College.
  • International transfers with 24 credit hours at an English-medium institution may qualify for an English waiver.

8. Costs and scholarships

  • 2026-27 international estimate: tuition and general fees USD 12,900, out-of-state surcharge USD 9,360, miscellaneous and program fees USD 1,900, College of Engineering fees (if applicable) USD 600, for a tuition and fees subtotal of USD 24,160–24,760; on-campus room and meals USD 14,850 and medical insurance USD 2,600; total USD 36,510–42,210.
  • Tuition guarantee: your year-one tuition, on-campus housing and meal plan rates stay the same for four years.
  • International Rocket Award: USD 8,000 a year for a 3.0 GPA or higher, awarded automatically at admission and applied to the out-of-state surcharge only.
