How to apply to art and design at the Kansas City Art Institute: 13 BFA majors after a shared First Year Foundation, a 10–15-piece portfolio, the Feb 1 fall 2027 deadline and automatic merit scholarships, with portfolio requirements and timelines for students in China, Canada and transfer applicants
The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) is a college of art and design that grants only the Bachelor of Fine Arts. It offers 13 majors: animation, art history, ceramics, creative writing, fiber, filmmaking, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography, printmaking, product design and sculpture. All first-year students complete the Foundation year and enter a major as sophomores. Applicants submit a personal statement, 10–15 images of recent work and transcripts; test scores are not required. The fall 2027 deadline is February 1, and applying by then waives the application fee. 2026-27 tuition is USD 45,000 and the on-campus cost of attendance is estimated at USD 69,940. Every applicant is automatically considered for merit scholarships based on portfolio and academics.
The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) in Kansas City, Missouri, is a four-year college of art and design that grants the Bachelor of Fine Arts. This guide summarizes the official requirements for students at high schools in China (including A-Level, IB and AP students), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver) and transfer students.
1. Majors and when you choose
- Degree: every major leads to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), which KCAI describes as a four-year program.
- 13 majors: Animation, Art History, Ceramics, Creative Writing, Fiber, Filmmaking, Graphic Design, Illustration, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Product Design and Sculpture.
- Foundation first: the course catalog says all first-year students complete the Foundation program and enter a major as sophomores. The Foundation year is 30 credit hours: 18 in Foundation Studio and 12 in liberal arts (Writing Seminar, Art Historical Studies I/II, Critical Studies). In fall, each studio is led by one faculty mentor through a series of projects; spring is three five-week themed workshops that students choose.
- Choosing a major: during the Foundation year students visit and hear from every studio major, and they pick a major at the end of the year. The catalog lists a "Change of Major" policy in its index, but the pages we read do not give its conditions, so how to change majors is not published there; ask an academic advisor.
- Credit structure: in the 2026-2027 catalog every studio major's curriculum is labelled 75 studio hours. Art History and Creative Writing majors with a studio minor total 120 credit hours, or 135 with a studio double major.
- Double majors: Art History and Creative Writing can be paired with a studio major, for example Graphic Design and Art History, or Painting and Creative Writing.
- Liberal arts: lower-division required courses are Art Historical Studies I and II, Critical Studies and Writing Seminar; upper-division electives come from art history, history, literature, philosophy and the sciences.
2. Portfolio
- How many pieces: the first-year, international and transfer pages all ask for 10–15 images of recent work that show both technical and conceptual strengths. The portfolio page says "a minimum of 10 pieces of recent work" and invites you to add more, including sketchbooks and journals. The two pages differ slightly; plan on 10–15 pieces and check with admissions before sending more.
- What they look for: knowledge and versatility of media and subject matter, combined with an understanding of color, composition and design.
- Format: JPEG is preferred, but any universal audio, video, graphic or web format is accepted. File limits are 5MB per image, 250MB per video, 30MB per audio file and 10MB per PDF. Time-based or performance work can be sent as video, and links from YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud are accepted.
- How to submit: upload the portfolio in the applicant portal after you submit the online application. Never mail original work.
- Portfolio reviews: KCAI encourages a review before applying, either a 30-minute virtual one-on-one with an admissions counselor or a virtual National Portfolio Day.
- Scholarships: an application must have a portfolio on file to be reviewed for a scholarship.
- Summer program: for high school students who want to build a portfolio, KCAI points to its two-week Pre-College ArtLab (PCAL).
3. Application materials and deadlines
- Fall 2027: the application deadline is February 1, 2027; the reply and deposit deadline is May 1 (contact your admissions counselor if you need more time).
- Spring: November 1 for first-year and transfer students; deposit by January 15.
- After the deadlines: applications are still welcomed, but scholarships are awarded first come, first served.
- Deposit: all new students pay a USD 250 non-refundable tuition deposit, applied to tuition.
- Application fee: the international page says the fall application fee is waived for first-year students who apply by February 1 and transfer students who apply by March 1. The pages we read do not state the fee amount.
- Personal statement: the first-year page accepts a written statement (about 500 words) or a video (about 3 minutes) answering three questions: your background and experience in art, your artistic goals at KCAI, and your ambitions and career goals after graduating.
- Recommendation: optional but strongly recommended, ideally from a teacher who can speak to your work ethic, art-making abilities and character.
- Testing: SAT/ACT are not required; only Missouri applicants who may qualify for Bright Flight should send scores.
- Transcripts: an official high school transcript, sent electronically (Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, SCOIR) or in a sealed envelope from the school.
4. International applicants
- Transcripts: all applicants submit official secondary (and any college) transcripts. Transcripts not in English need certified English translations through a credential evaluation agency such as IERF or WES. They can be mailed by the school or agency, sent electronically, uploaded to the Common App or emailed by the school.
- English: applicants whose primary language is not English submit one of the following; KCAI calls these recommended minimum scores: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.0, PTE 53 or Duolingo 105.
- English test waivers (any one):
- SAT with a recommended minimum of 950, or ACT with a recommended minimum of 20;
- at least 24 non-ESL credit hours, or at least three years, completed at a regionally accredited U.S. institution;
- a letter from your international high school or college confirming that English is the principal language of instruction.
- After admission: once KCAI issues an official letter of acceptance, admissions will ask for a copy of your passport's biographical page, proof of financial support (admissions tells you the amount and provides Affidavit of Support forms if family or others will sponsor you) and international health insurance that meets KCAI's minimum coverage, so the I-20 can be issued. Applicants already in the U.S. also send copies of their most recent visa and I-20.
- AP/IB credit:
- AP: Art History, liberal arts and studio art exams need a score of 4 or higher and earn 3 credits each. AP Art History cannot replace the art history prerequisites; studio AP credit goes to open electives and counts toward a studio elective only with approval from the department chair and the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.
- IB: liberal arts and studio exams need a 4 or higher and earn 3 credits each; the first three IB credits always go to open electives.
5. Costs and scholarships
- 2026-27 tuition: USD 45,000 a year (12–18 credits), or USD 22,500 a semester, plus a USD 900 campus fee, USD 650 technology fee and USD 200 health and wellness fee.
- Housing and food: a double room in Barbara Marshall Residence Hall is USD 10,250 for two semesters; the 14- or 19-meal plan is USD 3,764 or USD 4,190.
- Cost of attendance (2026-27, on campus): USD 69,940 in total, including USD 1,000 for books and supplies; living off campus is estimated at USD 70,626. The cost page has no separate international figure.
- Merit scholarships: every applicant is automatically considered; awards are based on portfolio and academic achievement, test scores are optional, and merit awards apply only to tuition and fees. Full-time students with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 renew in full; 2.0–2.49 renews at 85% and below 2.0 at 75%. The scholarship page does not say separately whether international students are eligible; ask admissions.
- Priority scholarship deadlines: first-year Early Action December 1, first-time freshman February 1 and a third deadline March 1; transfer students March 1.
6. Students at high schools in China
- Gaokao and art exams: KCAI does not say how Gaokao scores or provincial art exam (美术联考/校考) results are used; ask admissions (admiss@kcai.edu).
- Grades: no minimum GPA or average is published for international applicants.
- A-Level: KCAI publishes credit rules only for AP and IB; whether A-Levels earn credit is not published.
- The international page lists China among the countries recent students have come from.
7. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC)
- The international page lists Canada among the countries recent students have come from.
- English: KCAI does not publish a country waiver list. Applicants whose primary language is English do not need a test; otherwise, a letter from your school confirming English as the principal language of instruction is one waiver route.
- BC grades: no grade requirements for the BC curriculum are published; ask admissions.
8. Transfer students
- Minimum residency: transfer students must complete at least four full-time semesters at KCAI to earn the BFA.
- Materials: a personal statement of about 500 words, 10–15 images of recent work and official transcripts from every college attended, even if no credit was granted. Applicants with fewer than 24 college credits (including humanities and science) also send a high school transcript.
- Transfer credit: up to 63 credits in liberal arts and/or studio, with a C or better (or a pass-type grade equivalent to C). Bachelor's or master's credits from non-U.S. institutions are also considered. About one to two weeks after acceptance, admissions sends the credit evaluation.
- Entry level: placement depends on the number of transferable studio credits and the level shown in the admission portfolio.
- Deadlines: fall transfer applicants who apply by March 1 have the fee waived, and the transfer scholarship deadline is March 1. The admissions page lists only February 1 as the fall 2027 application deadline and does not show a separate transfer date; confirm with admissions.
