How to apply to art and design at Columbia College Chicago: BFA and BA portfolio requirements for Fine Arts, Illustration, Photography, Graphic Design, Interior Architecture and Fashion Design, no application fee and test-free review, with portfolio requirements and timelines for students in China, Canada and transfer students
Columbia College Chicago offers art and design bachelor’s degrees as BFAs and BAs. BFA applicants in Fine Arts, Illustration, Photography, Graphic Design, Interior Architecture and Fashion Design must submit a portfolio; BA applicants don’t have to, but a submission is the only way to be considered for a talent-based scholarship. There is no application fee, SAT/ACT scores are not used, and admission is rolling. The priority deadline is November 1, 2026; Fashion Design BFA closes December 1 and requires a virtual interview. English: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80; Canadian students are exempt. 2026-27 tuition and fees are USD 37,390, and international students are automatically considered for USD 8,500–12,500 merit awards by GPA.
Columbia College Chicago is in Chicago’s South Loop and focuses on the arts, media and creative fields. Its art and design bachelor’s programs sit mainly in the School of Visual Arts, the School of Design and the School of Fashion. This guide summarizes the official requirements for 2027 entry, with a focus on each program’s portfolio.
1. Art and design bachelor’s programs
- School of Visual Arts: Fine Arts (BFA), Illustration (BFA), Photography (BFA) and Visual Arts (BA). The Visual Arts BA places fine and commercial art within the liberal arts, across painting, sculpture, illustration, digital media and more.
- School of Design: Graphic Design (BA or BFA) and Interior Architecture (BFA).
- School of Fashion: Fashion Design (BFA), plus Fashion Studies (BA).
- BA vs BFA: Columbia says BAs allow more flexibility, with electives outside the major or a minor, and about 90% of students pursue a BA; BFAs have more intensive required coursework and fewer electives.
- First year: the Illustration page says first-year students take foundational courses in art and design. Credit totals and course lists are in the course catalog, which we could not access this time, so they are not covered here; check catalog.colum.edu.
- Changing majors: rules for changing majors after enrolling, or switching between a BA and a BFA, are not published; ask admissions or your school.
2. Portfolio requirements by program
Columbia states that BFA applicants must submit materials, which are used both for admission and for merit- and talent-based scholarships. BA applicants are not required to, but a submission is the only way to be considered for a talent-based scholarship. You upload work in the “Portfolio” section of your Columbia Connect page after submitting your application; Common App applicants must wait until Columbia receives their data and they activate Columbia Connect. Undecided applicants may follow any one program’s requirements, but only one.
- Fine Arts BFA, Illustration BFA and Photography BFA:
- Part I: a 250-word artist statement about your work, influences and what you hope to explore.
- Part II, choose one: a traditional portfolio of 15–20 works in a variety of media and subjects, each with dimensions and a one- to three-sentence description (Fine Arts asks for drawing from life or imagination rather than photographs where possible; Illustration and Photography emphasize imagination and a consistent, original vision); or an alternate portfolio piece, one original work responding to the idea of “Interruption” in any medium, plus a 250–500-word explanation of your idea, materials and process.
- Visual Arts BA: one original work on the “Interruption” prompt, plus a 250–500-word explanation.
- Graphic Design BA: 10–15 images of creative work such as typography, applied drawing, information design, branding, web graphics, packaging, advertising and publication design, each with its communication goal, materials and dimensions.
- Graphic Design BFA: an artist/designer statement plus 15–20 work samples in the same areas, with materials and dimensions.
- Interior Architecture BFA: 10–15 images that show your interest in interior spaces, with dimensions and a short description; past projects or collected images showing thought about space, human interaction, materials, signage, furniture or lighting are welcome. First-year applicants need a high school GPA of at least 2.75.
- Fashion Design BFA: a portfolio of 10–15 pieces (captions encouraged) and an essay of 300–500 words on how you approach problem-solving through a critical design practice. The final deadline is December 1, with no applications accepted after that. All applicants take part in a roughly 15-minute Zoom interview with faculty about their portfolio, background and interest in fashion design.
- Fashion Studies BA (Merchandising and Product Development concentrations): a PDF of no more than 10 annotated images.
3. How to apply and deadlines (2027 entry)
- Application: the Common App (opens August 1, 2026) or Columbia’s own application (opens September 8); submit only one. There is no application fee.
- Rolling admission: the first decisions go out in October 2026, and after that a decision usually comes about three weeks after a file is complete. There is no early decision or early action.
- Deadlines:
- November 1, 2026: priority deadline for all programs and terms; applications are still accepted afterwards, but meeting it gives priority admission and scholarship review.
- December 1, 2026: the spring 2027 application closes; final deadline for Fashion Design BFA.
- January 15, 2027: the timeline page says portfolios, transcripts and applications for all programs not on the December 1 list are due by this date for priority admission and scholarship review. The first-year page lists only the November 1 priority deadline; the two pages differ, so aim for November 1.
- May 1, 2027: suggested date for the USD 250 tuition deposit, which is nonrefundable after that.
- Other materials: high school transcripts; a short personal statement in the application about your goals, creative development, career plans or personal growth; an optional section to explain your academic history.
- Testing: admission is fully test-free. SAT/ACT scores play no role in admission or merit scholarships and are not accepted. After admission, AP scores of 3+ and IB scores of 4+ earn credit.
4. Students at high schools in China
- Transcripts: official or certified records from your high school, possibly with a leaving or graduation certificate; records not in English need an official English translation.
- English: required if English is not your country’s primary language. Options include TOEFL iBT (80+ recommended), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 105, PTE 60, Cambridge English 176+, three years at an English-medium high school, the IB Diploma, IB English Language and Literature 5+, Cambridge A-Level English (non-ESL) C+, or AP English Language and Composition 4+. SAT/ACT scores are not accepted as proof of English.
- Gaokao and art exams: Columbia does not say how the Gaokao or Chinese art exam results are used; ask international admissions (intladmissions@colum.edu).
- Visa funds: after admission you request an I-20; for 2026-27 you must show at least USD 64,453, and Columbia scholarships count toward it.
5. Students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver)
- The English requirements page lists Canada as an English-speaking country, so no proof of English is needed; it does not say whether Quebec is an exception, so French-language students should check.
- Students who need a student visa apply as international students with the materials above. Requirements for BC grades are not published.
6. Costs and scholarships
- 2026-27 tuition (undergraduates who started in fall 2025 or later): full-time tuition and fees are USD 37,390 a year, made up of USD 17,749 tuition per semester (12–18 credits), USD 793 in fees per semester, and a USD 153 U-Pass fee per semester for 6+ credits. Housing is extra.
- Columbia Excellence Award (international merit scholarship): international students are considered automatically, with no separate application. It is renewable and set by cumulative GPA: USD 12,500 for 3.75+, USD 10,500 for 3.3–3.74 and USD 8,500 for 3.0–3.29 (the page does not say these are annual amounts; check with Columbia).
- Talent-based scholarship: competitive and renewable for up to four years, usually for fall entrants; you must submit work in your intended field (work in other disciplines is not considered), and international students may be considered. The number of awards varies and amounts are not published.
- Need-based aid requires the FAFSA, which is only for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
7. Transfer students
- Deadlines are the same as for first-year applicants (priority deadline November 1, 2026). Submit the portfolio for your intended program; Interior Architecture BFA transfers who have taken interior design or architecture courses also submit completed projects and each course syllabus.
- Send official transcripts from every college attended; applicants who went to a non-U.S. high school or have fewer than 24 graded credits also send a final high school transcript.
- Credits from colleges outside the U.S. need a third-party evaluation from an AICE or NACES member before admission, at your own cost.
- How many credits transfer and at what level you enter are not published; ask transfer admissions (transfer@colum.edu).
